Nope, it's how races should be organised :)

Its the first time I've ever organised it fully; tanky had done it himself for 36 years and kept the finer details to himself! I may be his daughter but I'm not a fell runner by any means and I am trying to keep the event a) going and b) in the tanky family!!! Please give me a break! Bear in mind that there is a bloody lot to do for you lot to run in the mud :D

Give me a week and I'll send you the Details Clair but with out a map to hand Crowden is on the Res side by the first Path junction after the gate from the road. Snake is outside the pub on the other side of the road.

We've(Plumbum, Brent and Myself(WMRT)) have organised hill side of the event and taken the entries for the last two years. before that it was Tanky. Clair is taking it all on this year.

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
fair enough then
it's a fantastic race, all the best with it Clair
-
Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
IanDarkPeak - any chance of going getting the road section removed as per our discussions last year?
-
Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
Clair....I'll be in touch as well.
I have a a raft of TT info stashed at home too...
I'll trawl the pile of fell stuff in the back room...
There are bound to be a few Trog gems to be had!!!
(and plenty of nightmares too:D!)

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
I've found loads last night and i've got the check points and registration times sorted!! I just want to sort out the landowners before publishing grid ref's.
Right; this route! If someone can give me an alternative I will discuss with my 'informants' and we'll make a decision. The new route, in my opinion, has to be of equal length and must take into consideration landowners! (I think this could be why it went down the road - due to permissions but I may be wrong!).

Clair,
It might be that now is the opportunity to remove the road section on the Snake road as Joe suggested. The checkpoint could be at the road crossing. There is a path through the woods, rough in parts, just right for a great fell race.

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
Clair, I think Ian Dark Peak knows all the ins and outs of the possible route variation and what the issues were. The proposal is based upon the thought that its safer to get everyone off the road. I don't think it needs to be decided yet as far as runners are concerned, so no worries for the entry form, but I think it wasn't done last year because Ian had already gone through getting permission from the landowners.
Postscript: The checkpoint would probably be where the new route passes the bridge below the snake inn, i.e. just at the end of the changed route, only a short distance from the old checkpoint.

There is no formal organised transport associated with the race but a post nearer the time on the Car sharing section might well lead to a lift from a forumite ;)

agreed
but unfortunately the car-share bit of the forum is less frequented than this bit, so might be worth hanging out here

Yep its fairly easy to go down through the woods and Ive often wondered why the race doesnt. The road section has been notorious for giving people cramp over the years so I would have thought this would go down well all round.
The road has always been handy though for support for people who are needing food or a drink. The laybys always have support in them.
I prefer to be self sufficient.
-
Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
We should also think about the history of the race
If its always gone down the road then I think a certain person should decide if it should be changed.

I like the road section as I can blast down it but if it gets changed then ok but add 10-15 minutes on to you time at least.
Not my choice though.

I bet it will add less than five minutes .... and will increase life expectancy:p

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
I think one of the reasons why the checkpoint was at the snake inn was becuase the pub had a phone; and before the days of mobiles this was essential; I will talk to the rest of the 'committee' when I've figured out who can be on it ;) and we'll make the decision based on safety, history, and mobile phones!!!!!
Cheers

No fell runner likes a road section. Are you getting enough sleep Ian ?.

Can you get a mobile phone signal at the Snake Inn ? I remember quite a few years ago I was driving towards the Snake Inn and there was an injured sheep in the road. Someone had hit it and not reported it  and it was still alive in the middle of the road. I stopped at the Snake Inn to call the police and get a vet out for it as I couldn't get a signal on my mobile phone. It was about 10 years ago mind so maybe the coverage is much better now ?
I wouldn't mind losing the road section by the way as it was the only downside to a great race route.

Not the way I run....Whoooosh-----------;) You would have to run down a twisty/slippy wooded path cross a stream climb 50-100ft up the hillside then run on a vague trod until you met up with the bridge. You cannot stay on the "nearside"after the first stream junction as there was a short section with no right of way if I remember correctly.

Phone reception is nil to non existant. there is a pay phone there which is what we used for back up. Even the Team radio's have trouble and last year we needed to use a second vehical as a relay station.
The police regularly stop around for breaks here when on training as they are out of comms with control!
Happy to have the road bit taken out. It'll be the same for every one. Don't for get though you don't have to run down the road.

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
As an alternative you could have a checkpoint at Snake top, run across the boggy path over Featherbed Top, down into Ashop Clough and straight up the path to (new checkpoint at) Fairbrook Naze - then along to Seal Stones and continue across to Golden Clough. I imagine the distance and climb would be about the same as the existing route.
-
Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
The road would be better on roller blades though. :)

I like that! Gives us Glossopdalers a bit of an extra advantage/more opportunity to get lost. Not that I'm able to do the race this year - I'll be running in the New Zealand fjordland the day before (poor me!).

Re: Road Section
Has a decision been made regarding the Snake pass section, i.e. is going through the woods going to be compulsory?
regards
Pat.

not yet but it might be worth a recce

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
Entry has been posted, like the sound of replacing the road section with the woodland route.
Great race thanks to Clair and all those who have kept it going since Tanky relinquished the organisers role.
See you first weekend in Dec 2010 :)

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
I am interested in this event as I have done the four inns a few times and it seems to follow similar lines.
Is the first half basically along the Pennine Way?

Yes (ish). You can follow any line you want as long as you avoid the Rollick Stones up Bleaklow and avoid trespassing (hem hem!). There are two checkpoints, one at Crowden & one at The Snake Inn. You need to recce and have good nav skills, or follow the back of someone who knows where they are going.

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
great, thanks.
is the Crowden CP at the Youth Hostel a la 4 inns?

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
Usually up by the old YH road, however there will be grid refs for the CPs released. They may even be on this thread earlier on, if not search for the 2009 Tanky's thread.

Hey Rodders. Probably not tbh. I put it on my calendar but have something else on now that weekend. Looks like I'll miss Tanky's too, which is a real shame
