All being well they should have gone out today.

Hey thanks for all the replies :)
I'm completing (walking) not competing which I think is a good goal for my first time at a big event like this. Its interesting to see what people recommended, it makes sense that it is entirely personal. My problem I guess is the common one of having a busy life and having to fit training inbetween my other commitments.
I shall keep my training up at it's current volume until the week before and then taper off in the week running up to the Fellsman to let my muscles rest, stuffing my face with wholewheat pasta and chips lol
Cheers guys, look forward to seeing you all there. Well, your backs anyway as you zoom off into the distance!

You might want to acclimatise your body to getting up very early in time for a 6am kit check, followed by a bus ride to the start (assuming you don't qualify for an Ingleton kit check). So that's many hours of faffing around before you even start. If I had to drive on the day I'd need to get up at 3am, or spend the Friday night in a tent somewhere (guess b+b's will be full by now) and get up at 5.30am. Non of this is very appealing!
Handbook arrived this morning. It's all starting to feel real now!
It says that every entrant will receive a copy of the pre-marked map. I'll still take a set of maps along as well, just in case.
Any tips on emergency food? I'm guessing dense and sealed is best; any advances on malt loaf?
Hi there, I've been training quite hard for this but not hard enough due to time constraints and pesky niggles from previous injuries so I am thinking that if I go for it (and I'm having to seriously consider whether I will or not), I'll be completing not competing too although I intend to run as much as I can and walk when I can't run. I did 28m yesterday and my poor old knee did not enjoy it (although the rest of me did :) ). Got to admit that I'm finding the idea of it overwhelming especially as my running buddy has become superman and really should be enjoying doing the best Fellsman he's ever done and not have to hang back because of me. I may try and solo it and see how that goes:o Now which way up does the compass go?!
I'm not doing it this year but I've done it in the past; a lot of getting your head round the distance is psychological. Just break it down into chunks in your mind, and complete each chunk before worrying about the next bit. Start to Dent is a big chunk, then over Blea Moor to Stonehouse, Stonehouse to Fleet Moss, FM to Cray, and Cray to Yarnbury, after which you're almost home.
One good 'tactic' we hit on was not to sit down and rest much at the food stops, but just get the food and eat it whilst moving SLOWLY out of the feed stop.
Good luck with it, everyone who's doing it. It's a shame the start's been messed about but it seems that's not the fault of the organisers, who put on a cracking event every year!
Don't get excited just yet, here's the story as of 18th Feb (probably after the handbook went to print).
I've emailed the organiser to find out what the truth as we clearly need to know whether we can expect a free map or need to go out and buy one. Perhaps it's a question dmd can answer.
It could be a serious problem; most entrants will not be reading this thread and reading Suzanne's introduction (in the handbook) could justifiably turn up expecting a map to be waiting for them, for free.
It's too late for me, I've already bought mine thinking we weren't getting one!
Whee, my handbook arrived in the post at the weekend. Sending in my application early obviosly worked, I've been given number 004 (so say hi if you see me on the day). Post your numbers up and if I see you en-route or at the start I'll say hello :)
No worries on that score Roger, I'm up at half 6 every day so early starts are the norm! There is a Friday night kit check for those of us staying at Threshfield on Friday night so that's all good.
Keen!

Number 199 for me. I did a 28 miler in the Dales on Saturday, everaging 4.9 mph. Therefore I can 'confidentally' predict that my fellsman time will be 12 hours and 15 minutes :) (cough)
haha, i wish 25 mile Blubberhouses in under 4 hours Does that mean I can predict 1 hours or so (in my dreams) i might finish?
Hike number 186.
See you there
am guessing we can sleep in hall on Sat night like last time I did this (it doesn't seem to say so in handbook)
I'm no 80 , anyone else doing a steady calderdale for a warm up. First fellsman so feel free give me a wave as you pass :-)
I was scared enough but when the Fellsman booklet came through the door with a picture on the front of some poor bloke practically clawing his way desperately up Gregareth my reaction was :w00t::w00t::w00t:
you've embarked on journey of self discovery one might say steampig............ or as in my case it all seemed a good idea sat in my living room with my feet up :w00t: hopefully see you there then steampig :)
Number 121, feel free to say hi or feed me jelly babies !
Friday night sleeping in the back of the car is top prep !!! :o
Number 307. Just going for a completion this year as I've had a bad year for illness and injury. Just want to get through Redshaw before grouping. Sitting in Dent for over two hours before deciding to carry on didn't help last time I did this!
Just complaining to the other half about how slow our posties are cause everyone has their numbers....the she said "a little book thing came for you on Saturday"!!!! So my number is 171, but that is all I have, the book with the number stuck on it.....is there anything else supposed to be in with it?
But easy to remember at checkpoints...........
I'm 190 and it'll be my first Fellsman.
I remember reading the threads on here a few years ago about the Fellsman when I first started fell running and thinking I'd love to be able to do that - now I'm going to (hopefully!).
So excited, can't wait to get going :D
Haha, its only something like 47 miles to go from the trig on Gragareth too!
I can still remember my very first fellsman when I was stumbling down the rubble strewn cart track into Dent having been running for something like 4.5 hours, and feeling like I'd had more than enough to be honest - its amazing to then think that I carried on and managed to get to Threshfield getting on for 14 hours later :)
I meant to say that I am Number 108 for my 18th Fellsman :w00t: So, it doesn't really hold any fears for me. I know what to expect. As long as I am fairly fit and don't suffer any catastrophies on the day, then I should get through. It's just a matter of how quick or slow I am.
Been taking it steady last week or so due to a pain in right knee. So after a good winter of training is this forced rest going to help? Hoping to beat last years 15hrs 19 mins. Number 104 bring it on....
Here's the story with the map;
So now you know!Quote:
Hi Andy
As previously
stated, we do not as yet have a delivery date for the map, so it did
not make it to the equipment list (written in December) and is therefore
not in the envelope with the handbook. It is hoped that it will arrive
in time for the event, our intention is to give these out, free to every
starter, at registration.
We are insisting that everyone bring their
own maps (as per the rules in the handbook), as it may not be to
everyone's taste, or scale. Our apologies for any further confusion.
Best wishes,
Shona Brunskill

i only got a book too 9sqrun and wonderd wether tally card and such would be with it too and like you a first timer and my mrs never got to it
Your circular tally card and race number (race numbers were only introduced in the last few years) are given to you after you have registered and passed all the kit check requirements. Although there is talk of a special 50th anniversary map for this event, it has always been a case of supplying your own OS maps to cover the whole route, and it would be a good idea to take your own just in case the event map does not materialise. The handbook really does have all the information you need. Take the time to read it thoroughly and make sure you have everything withyou on the day, or risk not being allowed to start.
You won't get number 1 for the Fellsman unless you were last year's winner. If last year's winner doesn't start then there won't be a number 1.
I seem to remember this convention being adopted after one of the committee members did the event as number 1 and lots of people just assumed that he was the previous year's winner - so we did that from then on.
