Yes, agreed, interesting points, particularly the one about some of the giants not being able to hack it.
I'm guessing this is because it is streets ahead in "toughness" than, say, Langdale (the other English AL this year), Borrowdale (2008) and Duddon (2007). Most of the giants can probably train for these without it (the training) impacting on their outright speed for the shorter races, and also less time is required to recover from that specific training, than say the training that Wasdale deserves/needs.
And then there's the recovery time that the race itself demands.
I.e. Wasdale has much more of an physical and mental impact on a Championship season than other ALs in the Lakes.
Jebby seems not to be as bothered by Wasdale as some of the others at the top end and, again a guess, this could be down to his tremendous endurance on two wheels. Mrs TR took a picture of him absolutely steaming off Gable at I'm assuming around the 3 hour mark, looks like he's descending Grasmere......eye-watering stuff. I never got to see Kenny Stuart, Billy Bland, Colin Donnelly, etc, running in their prime so am unable to make a comparison.
I never mind that too much, I'm normally just relieved to be off those loose football sized boulders.
I can see how people would find Peris or Jura harder because Lliwedd - Snowdon or the final Paps on Jura contain rougher, looser underfoot, more dangerous terrain than Wasdale.
I've never done Peris, but as i was on all fours in Wasdale last year (the only race where i've impersonated my dog- not the eating or humping bit) and was then just about getting round to the finish. Jura i enjoyed more maybe cos it's rougher than Wasdale with more walking. But the road bit at the end i was dreading. I don't do roads. Without the road bit- Wasdale. But add road- then Jura. Obviously this isn't my definitive answer so will make further adjustments after i've done Peris.;) I'm sure Graham will interject with bbrrrr NO bollocks!;)
I think maybe that's it, Jura and the Peris contain lots of sections which are matched to my strong points but Wasdale contains lots of gradual up hills. Rough steep ground is a bit of a leveller so I do better and tend not to lose as much pace as others over it, but then at the gradual hills just cannot get a run going. Steve Birkinshaw left me for dead on Saturday on that long climb after Seatallan towards Pillar.
Peris is a cracking race, clashes with the Ben this year, but for me it's the best long race in Wales (that I've done), but saying that I'm starting to enjoy the 1000m peaks more each year, but again that contains large sections of gradual up hills that are on that boundary of run/walk terrain.
:eek:Surely an overreaction or are you being ironic?
I'm interested in seeing the results too, but talking of respect; have a bit of it for the organisers who did/do a great job.
Feel like you wasted your time - come off it. In the old days you were lucky to get them sent to you and I've had to wait until the next year in one race to see them pasted on the organisers car window.
Lets get some perspective here.
If you had dibbers will the results be up on Sportident.co.uk soon?
Since things seemed to have calmed down a little from last night, I've been trying to work out where Graham's coming from as regards the records. You would expect the longer race to have the longer record (which it has) and if more runnable the pace to be faster (which it is, roughly 9'45 at Wasdale, against 10'16 at Peris). There is of course the Billy factor, but Gavin's got close to Billy's record at Borrowdale, so he isn't completely rubbish!
But I agree with IainR's post. A lot of it is personal preference. My opinion, as unworthy as it is from a humble and youthful plodder, is that Peris is the harder, as it has more rough and rocky running than Wasdale. It's only the area around Scafell Pike that is sustained, and that is largely flat, and therefore shuffleable. Even the descent off Great Gable is largely scree and nice grass if you know where to look ;). Other runners think the opposite, for precisely the same reason. "Friends" from Clayton who I'd otherwise be faster than, came floating past me on the rocky parts of the Lakeland Classics, and think Jura's fine as long as you don't get lost :p
All that said all of them are considerable undertakings, and Billy flying round at 10 minute miling puts things into perspective! Makes my 15 minute a mile effort look almost respectable  I must have a crack at Jura next year, but Mandy didn't look impressed when I asked if Stoodley Pike counted as a qualifying race
I've not done Peris but Wasdale killed me on Saturday having had a good run for me at Jura this year. So for me Wasdale is the tough one - but I'll be back next year to try to do it justice.
I felt like I was going well until near Styhead where I got cramp up my inner thighs and had to sit down for the first time. I then climbed reasonably quickly to Esk Hause, not running but only a couple of people overtook me.
Just after Esk Hause I had to lie down to massage the cramp away taking about 5 minutes - a lot of people went past me. Found a good line down off Scafell Pike to near the col but as soon as I started the grassy running, cramped up big style. I then alternated slow, painful stagger with lying down all the way to the finish getting passed by people I'd not seen since Seatallan.
I've suffered with cramp on Jura but usually because I'm not fit enough but I felt fit for this weekend. I drank 3 litres on the race, 2.5 l of it with Nuun in it. Also had three gels, a bar and jelly babies. I'm wondering whether having too little to eat on Thursday and Friday (and not much before the race considering the early start to drive up) could have contributed.
A good day out and I'm glad to have got round. Thanks to all the organisers, marshalls and food people at the end.
On the litter front, I finished with two more gel wrappers than I started with and a couple of other bits, but I don't think we need to get too worked up. Considering the number of gels consumed, I think those wrappers dropped could easily have been dropped by accident, trying to fiddle them into a pocket while running or dropping out when retrieving something else from a bum bag. As a community, I think (hope) we cleaned up after ourselves.
Well done to everyone that set off on Saturday.
