Been meaning to ask Roy, if you don't mind, what's the O.B.E for ?
I can see I'm going to regret this. Just an MBE (my breaking and entering), I used to hang out with this gang in East Germany before the Wall came down:

You'll have to buy me a pint some time.
But back to Bosnia. If you're interested it's worth looking at James Mason's pictures, he's a good photograher. Make sure you read the comments beneath, eg the Travnik album. Gives an excellent flavour of the Balkans and a problem that hasn't gone away. All this was frozen by the Cold War and erupted when it ended. It will return.
Next race Roy, the beer's are on me !
Never apologise for things like that Roy.
An old friend of mine was killed over there actually circa 94, maybe 95. Now he WAS a runner...unbelievable over 400m.
On a lighter note, you do look absolutely rock hard in that photo.
Anybody found any more photos of the race yet? I sneaked onto one of Jellybabyfairy's. Thought there would be a few more kicking about, there seemed to be a fair few photographers on the course!
Sorry to hear that, which mob was he with? Duke of Boots had a hard time around then.
And thanks. We all grew up very quickly out there. My running's not been the same since though.
Just been flicking through the other photos and there was a good quote under one of them:
When an out-going NATO commander-in-chief, a German, was asked by a reporter what was the world's best army, he answered "The world's best army is the one with American equipment, German officers, and British soldiers."
And I'm not being flippant, but I also found the ones of Sam Fox quite 'interesting'!
Not sure to be honest without checking. I do have the details somewhere. He was out on patrol in a truck and somebody/a group of people dropped a lump of concrete off a bridge onto his vehicle. It went throught the roof/windshield and crushed the poor sod. He wasn't wearing his helmet.
We used to have some amazing running battles out on that athletics field but he always had something extra and had the edge over me most of the time. I believe our old school has an athletics award named after him now. Sapper Ian Collins. A great bloke.
Sapper means he was a Royal Engineer. 2001 in Macedonia.

I got to play footsie with Sam that evening (perk of the job, somebody's got to do it).
Funnily enough, I'm a German speaker and in 1994 I gave lectures to the German Staff College and their School of Infantry about our time in Bosnia. In both places, a German officer asked me how I had managed to get my soldiers to do the things I needed them to do, some of which were extremely unpleasant and a bit dangerous. I could only say that the thought had never crossed my mind that they wouldn't and because I was doing it as well. It had obviously crossed their minds, though.
At the risk of appearing vain, where are all the race photo's ??
Any news on results? I presume they first appear on clayton website?
There's a few pics on there....
No official results as yet, but somehow these chaps seem to have some fairly specific times...

If Dom Raby was 23rd, that puts me 24th. Nice to get a mention in the telegraph. I struggle getting a mention in the Rossy free press.
Well done John Sutton
If you're interested (and to hijack the thread again), this is the line of work I was in:

The 2 trailers 'Keep the Cold War Cold' and the Spione aus dem Westen (if you speak German, in 2 parts) give an excellent flavour.
As I'm on the comeback trail after a very stop/start first half of 2011 what with injuries and illness, I find my thoughts turning to that fateful day in 2010 and the hardest race I've ever done. Full Tour of Pendle. Time to right a few wrongs from last year and beat the tar out of this classic. Although after circulating the famous Youtube videos from the 2009 race I can't get anybody interested in joining me from my wednesday night group...
Anybody giving early consideration to a(nother) run round the full tour(ture)?
Christ Simon, the pain of that last climb is still with me ! The 3 Peaks is a relative walk in the park over FTOP. I may be back for another crack, not sure. At the time it was a definite no. Hope your recovery is going well.
Ha ha! I was telling somebody last week about the last climb, and what a good job it was that I had a pal to vent my despair at as we went up it, otherwise I may have just laid down and gone to sleep! I'm like you, at the time, definite no. But I now feel there is unfinished business there for me.
Recovery going ok thanks, hope to be back running properly this week after all sorts of dietary and stomach related running issues. Food intolerance tests and various check ups these last few weeks, think (fingers crossed, touch wood, anything else that won't tempt fate!) we might have finally found the issue so building back up slowly. 2011 has been a weird one so far!
Hope you are well mate, give me a shout nearer the time if you decide to have another go and we can have a beer afterwards.
I'll be looking to do again. The only race I do regularly (er, except last year, when I forgot when it was!!). I love it. Will probably start to 'recce' it shortly once I've got myself back into the swing of things. I don't necessarily need to know where I'm going, but certainly a cheeky run round the second half of the race from Barley is a good training session!
I'll 'Care To Join Me?' it when I go if anyone's interested.
Love it!!:w00t:
If Carslberg did races....
Love this, and work depending will be back for this, after missing last year as well.
Cannot wait!
Actually walked round the second half today partly in the hope of discovering that that last hill really wasn't soooo bad. Unfortunately I discovered it IS as bad as I remember - and I was only walking! Still, I will probably give it another go if only because I use the excuse of having a cold last year for struggling at the end and I need to find out how true that was.
I like the sound of this race. I might try to drive down for a looksie around.
KK
I had a cold last year too.
It's a rock hard race, and combined with one of those days where everything felt wrong because I was a bit poorly I just never got going right from the start. I've made my mind up, I'm definitely entering.
Gary, I might take you up on that recce if I can earn enough credits with Mrs Simgreen78 in the meantime. Which is doubtful...
need to do this at some point... hopefully this year... better start training!!
have i missed the FTOP this year? i've not been aboe to find it on the calender, or am i having a dumb moment??:o
I think it's on the 19th November - now you know, you'll have to do it! I've had the excuse the last couple of years of being on the RallyGB, but it's the week before this year.........bugger :w00t:
Yeah I've noticed its not been advertised yet?
Hopefully soon.

P96 FRA Fixtures Calendar
what else is there to know?
Sorry, I meant on the Clayton website, with access to print off the entry form :)
So who's in then ? Quite looking forward to this after a few recce's.Seems a fast course and easy to blow up as the 1st half is quite fast and the 2nd where the climbs start.
2013 is next time I can do it :(
Dam work commitments.
Have a good race!
