Ah, but you'd eat it if it was a REAL emergency ..... :D
Not sure if I'm allowed. I get my knuckles rapped if I say too much, or at the very least shouted at.
Don't forget though that the official map is marked out with the checkpoint locations but not with your route. Navigation is your responsibility and I'm sure you will need to spend some time marking out your route, time that you won't have on the morning of the event.
Please be extra careful about bringing everything you need. In previous years with the kitcheck in Ingleton there has been the possibility of dashing out to the shops in Ingleton to replace missed items. There are no such outdoor shops in Threshfield. We really don't want to exclude anyone from starting, but rules is rules.

The above picture (posted with his permission) is of Jonathan Carter, Fellsman committee member and entrant 118 in the 2009 Fellsman. He claims to have worn this from start to finish.
I hope you'll all be able to take him seriously if he turns out to be next year's event organiser, which is a strong possibility.
Jonny was also entrant number 1 on his third entry to the event (obviously pulled some strings to get his entry in first) but many people mistook him for the previous winner, so from that time on we have allocated number 1 to the previous year's winner. Assuming Jez doesn't pull out before the event he will be running as number 1.
Haha, Anyone else been watching the video exploits of the "Fellsman" in his quest to complete this years Fellsman Hike......He's on Youtube, well worth a look.
Yes! Absolutely brilliant!
This is a particular favourite. I've watched it several times and it never fails to make me laugh.

I'm number 160. It'll be my second Fellsman - about 14 hours last year but whinjury and work have got in the way this year so I have a vague aim for a sub-16 hour time. We'll see how much residual endurance I have...
By the way, there is a new post on the Fellsman blog:
http://www.fellsman.org.uk/doku.php?...:3_weeks_to_go
This contains a clarification re the map (which says you can't rely it as your only map:
You may be wondering about the map mentioned in Suzanne’s article. It is our intention to give a map to every starter as a ‘birthday present’ to celebrate our 50th (as long as they have arrived by then!). We must stress, though, that the existing rules concerning maps still stand – the new map will not be accepted as the only map carried this year and is initially being considered a ‘keepsake’ of taking part in the 50th event. As the Fellsman is a point to point self navigation event, we feel it is safer to use maps you are already familiar with, ours may may not be to everyone’s taste and it may not provide sufficient detail for navigation purposes, particularly for novices. The committee will study the map carefully, consult with entrants on the weekend and consider its appropriateness for the map rule for next years event. We thank you in advance for your understanding about this matter, as you will all be aware, entrant safety is our prime concern and, until we have been able to study the map in detail first hand, we feel the above decision is in everyone's best interests.
Went for a little 'trot round' today, ahem...:closed:
Met a couple on the hills, forgot to get names but might see you again at Threshfield in a couple of weeks.
First time I'd ever navigated with a Harveys Map (well, not since Kimm 2003); bit odd at first but think it'll be ok.
Used my tnf enduro pack for the first time; well chuffed with it. Only did 15miles but I reckon it'll be spot on as I didn't know it was there. It's a squeeze gettting all the kit in but managed it just. I won't have much food with me on the day and I'll only need one bottle so that'll make a bit more space.
I found three kendal mint bars (from Hellvellyn Tri goodie bags over the last three years) and parcel taped them together for an emergency ration; it's about all it's good for!
Made me laugh too, could be the basis of a mass warm up in Ingleton. No 482
Unless I have another set back over the next couple weeks, I'm definitely giving the Fellsman a bash. No.185 so if you see me heading in the wrong direction...please give me a shout;) I'm feeling a mixture of terror and excitement but if I can pull this off I'll be over the moon because it will be the hardest thing I've ever done and if I don't, well, I'll have given it my best shot. :)
good on you hes, you'll fine ive never caught you yet and im sure you'll get round ok mate. i'll be there so come and say hello. not long now and time to start tapering
old un's right Hes, you'll be right, don't go too fast early doors, eat little and often, get chatting to those at the same pace as you, take it checkpoint by checkpoint and the finish will be yours, if you go through a bad patch, don't worry, it'll pass, Good Luck, you can do it;)
Thanks Steve and Old Un. I appreciate the advice and support. I'm going to take it steady and will definitely look out for some friendly faces to have a chat to. I've been advised to just go from one checkpoint to the next and not think of the miles to come. Sounds good advice and knowing there will be people waiting for me at the end will spur me on.:)

Hi AndyA - Think that could have been us out for a little wander - we were chatting to someone on the way up Buckden Pike (well my other half was - I was puffing along a little way behind!). Hope you had a good day out - wasn't it lovely (until it started hailing).
After a week in Scotland stomping up munros I'm feeling as ready as I'll ever be, just hoping this sore throat isn't going to turn into a cold.
Looking forward to seeing a few of you at the start before you all charge off into the distance!!
Steampig,
I was hoping around a similar time, do you have any timings or a rough schedule for checkpoints?
Cheers,
irish
Nick is probably about right.
Have only done Fellsman once- 2 years ago in dry conditions.
Hobble for me is usually 5.40 Fellsman was 15.03 but we made some mistakes in the dark once grouped and I didn't realise you could ungroup at the road so could perhaps have managed 14.30 ish???
So hard to say as it will depend on weather on day, how wet and boggy underfoot, just how you go on the day, groupings etc etc
Unsure if I'm going to be able to start after all, managed to fall and injure right knee skiing on saturday and still pretty swollen and sore. Due to have MRI wednesday to check cruciates/ACL etc. I've just been examined by our practice physio and he assures me the knee is very stable and likely any injury is likely to be minor but he has advised no running until all clear from MRI so here's hoping.....
BTW he thinks all the fellrunning has given me extra protection as my quads are strong and likely stabilised the knee during the accident so it does pay to run the hills:thumbup:
Perhaps someone can advise me,I have plotted all the map ref.from the handbook with a roamer, trying to locate all the cp's without an exact description has thrown up some interesting locations! A6 fig ref is a 100 x100m square, could be fun in the mist. Is this part of the fun of the Fellsman? As for time, well with the aid of the bus pass, sub 20 would be good!!
Have a good one as they say.
Most of the CPs are a doddle to find, apart from going over Middle Tongue maybe. And in theory the Middle Tongue checkpoint should be easier this year as its positioned near to the edge of the ridgeline but I think its the checkpoint after that, at Hell Gap, that I know runners have struggled to find or even missed in the past. Its normally quite close to the track (Gilbert Lane) if thats any help so, if push comes to shove and you manage to find the track, which you will inevitably, its either up or down that :)
Stolly, many thank for words of encouragement.back to the plotting
I was something like 18:10 in 2009 (when I was not nearly fit enough and was carrying a knacked ankle to boot) and 17:44 in 2010 (a bit fitter but took a very long route over Fleet Moss and Middle Tongue) but I'm very much hoping to better both times this year, feeling more running fit than ever.
Saying that has of course has immediately put the kiss of death on it :)
I think it will definitely be a set off and see :). I ran round the 3 peaks from Ingleton at the end of March, which is about 28 miles, and ran that at an average moving speed of 5.2 mph http://connect.garmin.com/activity/163237143 and I felt really good at the end of that. I guess that sort of speed is what I'll start the fellsman at..... but I suspect I sure won't be finishing it that way!
I'm hoping to do 18ish give or take an hour all depends how my eating goes with an ulcer that's playing me up. Grouping should be good as it sounds we might all be meeting there. Looking forward to it now its getting nearer. I bet nicks had a schedule for weeks now ;-)
