Long run season has begun
13.2 miles. 2,600ft. Mam Tor, Rushup Edge, Brown Knoll, Kinder Downfall, Kinder Gates, Barber Booth, Greenlands, Mam Tor.. Chippy was just shut when we got back..
Started off like a fine spring morning, turned into a thunder and lightening storm with some serious high winds and pelting hail, thick clag and back to pleasant conditions. Great run.
Saw a few runners out near Jacobs Ladder, ladies looking at maps..
Ruddy cold 16 miler today.. 50% vodka took its toll.. 8:30 min miles, felt OK but -10.. second 90+ mile week in a row, feeling much better
intense or volume ?
3 hrs off road running up beach, cliff tops, Castle Eden Dene which contains some tough climbs, disused railway line, some cross country back onto beach and home, rough out there this morning like :p 20 miles :)
Friday, another 10 on the road to work with rucksack. Today 9.7 miles on snow forest tracks with mates, then did another 8 on the road by myself. 67 miles for this week.
ATB
Tahr
7.2. miles 1003 feet (according to Map-my-run) - to Pikestone, up the fell side and over Wether beds, onto Coldberry Moss to Hardberry trig and home in the dying light - very wet snow under foot. Last bit of freedom before work tomorrow - yuk!
Not a bad weekend..
15 Friday (steady 7 and quicker 8 miles)
16 Saturday, steady 8"30 min miles
11.2 Sunday Steady 8"30 min miles
So cold, just brutal at the moment. -12, being out for any longer than 1:30 really hurts.
Box ticking shortie tonight (I'll make you for it tomorrow...honest) on my Stolly inspired run-everyday routine (started 24/10/13). 4 miles, head torching to Lodge Sike and back along the lane - light drizzle.
steady run in the snow, 14 miles 7:55 pace.. didnt leave til gone 8 struggled to get motivated, almost 0 degrees C.. tropical..
Logging in to the Fra Forums training page to see the what miles IainR has done today has become the highlight of my day,if I did that kind of weekly mileage a would last a proximately a week before something went pop. I don't know how you do it man and hold down a full time job, but I doff my proverbial hat to you.
Bat Run around Beacon Fell tonight,it was good to get back to normal after Christmas and New Year
Cant really claim a full time job.. officially I do but I'm waiting for a visa to arrive so my productivity is poor.. somehow published 5 papers this year but its certainly not been a great year of work from me..
But my life here is mega flexible, as long as I Skype with the missus before I go to bed I have no commitments, live on my own, 20 sq m flat, works flexible.. its easy mileage really, just the cold and snow is the issue.
I must admit Ian, I follow your Strava progress and training blog. I actually find it good motivation ! Id love to be able to have enough time to try to do half the miles you manage.
We'll have to see how long I can stay active for..
At the moment I find 100-110 hurts, but I'm about to quit working for 4 months so aim to get to 120 for a chunk of those..
Just added another 6.1 at lunch.. I was moaning about the -12, it's not -2 so all the snow is slush due to the grit, much harder running...
Maybe visiting our indoor track tonight for a light session.. was reading an article by Salazar and he reckons 7 x 300s, 300 recovery, basic all out efforts are a great session, so might push for that.
Struggling with motivation just now! Missed two good opportunities to get out in a row now!! :(
Much warmer but went indoors... met them after 1.5 miles run to them, 2.5 mile warm up on snowy trails, then the plan was 8x1k which I dont think is a light session.. minimum of 6.. we did 6 in 3:18-3:20..
Wore my GPS to get splits but distances way out, odd running on a tightly cornered 283 m banked track.. the rooms heated to 20 C as well so its a bit of a temperature shock..
But nice session, need to get out with them more. One of them, his dad is the main coach, former 3000m european medalist at junior level, another in the group is the son of Kunze, bronze medalist Seoul Olympics for GDR.. so some pedigree.
16 miles for the day.
Promise kept. 6.5 miles over Monksmoor in the pervasive, depressing murk. At least there was still some daylight or else navigation would have been a real pain and I'd have to stick to the lane. Night plus thick fog and scant landscape features are my navigation nemesis, even in the 'back yard'.
Tough one last night:eek:, 6.5 mile tempo run followed by a club training session, warm up then 18X200m hill reps then cool down, total of 7.5 miles. Pretty tried today.
really slow 4.3 last night.. felt shattered and it was so cold, the slush had refrozen, so used it as a rest day..
4 at lunch today, 4:30 managed 11.3 on snowy trails as before darkness set in.. no head torch, nice work out, 3 x 3km loops with a few guys from the running group.
62 for the week, 2 days to go so should hit 95 or so again..
Day off work so I decided to head over to the Lakes and run an old favourite - the quiet route from Bowscale, up to the tarn, climb up to and along the ridge to Bowscale Fell and then onto Foule Crag and Blencathra and straight back. Unfortunately, while parking at Bowscale, the weather was getting rather 'dramatic' with a whiteout and the snow was beginning to lay heavily on the road. Decided to do a shortie ( :( )as worried about getting back over the Pennines. Up to the tarn and then the ridge to Bowscale Fell, then followed the ridge east towards Raven Crags, dropping down steeply to the car again. Less than 5 miles and 1557 feet of ascent.
As it was the Brough to Middleton road was closed due to snow and all traffic diverted onto the A66 - so maybe it was right to be cautious - a bugger though.
Steady 10 last night, 8:20 nice and steady.. then 20 this morning, 6:48 pace, hard going in strong winds.

All miles sb 7 but was hard work at times, some long very gradual climbs into the wind.. then easy miles in other sections.. +1, had a real sweat on for a change
Managed just 2 miles this week and half an hour gym!
Hit with some 'man flu' but feeling better and out tomorrow hopefully.
Reading IanR's training posts is as close to running as I've gotten this week ;)
Looking forward to a hilly 8 miles tomorrow over the client hills
I went to the Upper Derwent Valley this morning for my first 'proper' fell/trail run since October. Been a bit injured and ill. Went Fairholmes, Abbey Clough, Lost Lad then along Derwent Edge to Whinstone Lee Tor. 'Over the edge' and along the road before a gentle run back along Ladybower.
11.1 miles, 1380ft of climbing, wind was too strong and cold and I was too bloody slow. Still, VERY happy to be back at it.
