Anniversary Waltz

Cheers Yiannis. I've not got much experiance of hard races yet (only started racing this year) but have plenty of time on my feet in the hills and will be doing Edale skyline and as many other races as I can squeeze in first. The cutoff looks reasonable - about 8 miles and 3600' of climbing in, according to grough route... I'd just need to pace myself so as not to arrive there too early and blow up in the 2nd half.

Really fancy a big lakeland race, and this is one of the few which has fallen on a free weekend!

Doing Anni Waltz for first time and have read robinson 2000 ft straight up. I was wondering from those who have done this race and have knowledge of the peak district are there any near 2000ft peaks that running up would have a similar gradient that sort of thing.cheers Matt

Highest point in the Peak is only just over 2000ft so you're not going replicate it exactly. Reps on Kinder, Win Hill or similar is your best bet. Top of Grindsbrook is rough, Win Hill is steep! ;)

This website has maps of hills by height range. The menu path is 'Maps' tab then 'Height Ranges' tab. You can zoom in and choose terrain view or OS map to gauge gradient.

I would be more bothered about the hell of a long run out on the track& bit of road before you even get your feet grubby, its hard on the old knees,

it's a fair old climb, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

The descent off Dalehead on the other hand ... ;)

Is it Bothy bag as parachute time then and just pray that you can keep up with the speed your legs want to go.

depends which way you go - the 'direct route' is pretty steep.

Actually, at the AW it's not too bad cos it's halfway through; at borrowdale after nearly four hours' running, it's fair to say I found it challenging.

The decent of cat bells is what im looking forward to most.....as long as my legs are still with me....im going to "cane it".:D

As for the climb up robinson well, i'll just see who i know and follow them.:D

He's refering to the Dalehead descent.

Actually, the climb up Robinson is long (for me anyway) but not the toughest by any means, although it has it's moments :D.
I get to the top in around 1 hour of racing. The run to the bottom of the climb is approx 20 minutes of cross country / road / track.
So 40 minutes climbing.

You really just need to find a similar length climb and go for it. Most of them will have steep awkward bits in them.

Examples - Whernside would be one, Arant Haw from Sedbergh another.

Not the same profile exactly, but good prep / training.

That's spot on ZHR - I actually enjoyed the descent of Dalehead on the AW last year, but curse every painful step during Borrowdale!

As anybody tried taking it really easy going up Robinson to save something in the legs....or is that not really necessary?

I tried that tactic for Three Shires going up Wetherlam and it worked a treat.

Get out round my way Chew....there are some steep 1000 foot climbs and cos of the valley you can easily do stuff like 10miles 5000ft

so back on point: I can't remember much about ascending Robinson, I was a bit overexcited cos it was my first race.

You find your pace don't you, I couldn't have run up there if Scarlett Johansen had been waiting at the top with a barrel of Jennings, so you fall into your best trudge.

Nice bit of scrambling two-thirds the way up too.

You don't need a 2,000ft mountain to train to go up a 2,000ft mountain though - some quickish reps on something a lot lower would work fine.

Plenty of good 1000' climbs to the kinder plateau, Blackden Barn to the trig point is a good one, as is Nether Booth to the same point. I guess an out and back, with 2 crossing of the plateau would be a decent start, or maybe twice this. Should give you about 2000' climbing and 5-6 miles per out and back depending on exact route...

The long run down newlands whilst fast is a good warm up for the climb up to Robinson.
IMHO its worth going for it up Robinson cos its the only really big climb in the race. head down arse up n go for it. then its just bleeding great fun. the descent down from dalehead if your not certain is best to follow the tourist path down on the right. great crack

For those thinking of doing the TWA - around half of the 75 entries have alrready gone in the first few days, so make up your minds soon to be sure of a place.

I think this route is destined to become one of the few true classics, with a stature alongside the borrowdales and duddon valleys of this world -

Did a full reccie of TWA in perfect conditions today-clear blue skies and not a breath of that windy stuff! Awesome route...very tough climbs early on, then fast running...don't set off too fast or you'll pay for it!! Defo do under 3 hrs in race...but by how much??

May well do DJ, although I don't do goulash or orange juice! ha ha....I must, I must, I must stay off the wine! (until Saturday night anyway!)

Haven't thought where i will stay yet. Any suggestions gratefully considered. I usually head for Braithwaite, but need to get to the start by public transport/ walk.

Is there an entry limit to the AW do we know?
