Last year it was at the corner of the wall trig side of stile according to mate who ran last year

CP1 is no longer on the wall due N of Pendle trig point. It was moved to take people off the path alongside the wall running down into Ogden Clough due to erosion concerns. You now go from the trig point N to stile over wall, turn left and follow path across moor to wall that comes up from Downham Moor to the new CP1. From here you turn L and head back to Ogden Clough SSW either along wall or across open moor. Effectively doing two sides of a triangle.
To stop erosion would it not make more sense to make the trig cp1 and run down the flagged path to meet up with the path over to the nick...Then you wouldnt have any erosion problems at all with erosion ?
It depends whether you get lost or not - if you take the open moor and get a few degrees out in the clag you can end up in Merely Clough instead of Ogden Clough.
The question is should you take an alternative route to the new CP1? (Is that within the rules as it doesn't say the route to CP1 is fixed?)
There's the option to run straight from Barley up past CP4 all the way up Ogden Clough - a little more distance but less ascent. Or, partway up the ascent to the trig then fire off to the left and take a direct line to CP1 and reduce around 2.3km to around 1.6km - less ascent, but what Mapper would call fell terrain rather than trail.
I did the latter on a recce as I couldn't imagine going over the trig nd it wasn't so bad.
That's definately an option WP. I think the route up Ogden Clough is too much of a detour but your 2nd option of 'firing off' to the left is a possibility. Only snag is once you reach the area around the top of Boar Clough the ground over Barley Moor to the wall / stream junction is very rough with a few peat hags, where as running over the top past the trig is easier underfoot so will make for a faster pace.
Just had a quick mess around up there this aft with the GPS. ONE of the 3 ways to CP1 mentioned above is 2 mins quicker ~ and I'm not telling you which one. You'll have to see which way I go on Saturday
Just wondering what reccomended clothing should be worn for the full tour leggins or shorts, and which shoes are the best to use for the full tour eg mudclaws, xtalons 212.
Rich, shorts depnds on weather conditions, wet and cold - leggings. Mild and dry shorts. Simples !!!
Shoes got to be Mudclaws on tour every time. Have a good run.
think i might try and get one last race out of my mountain bears, they r falling to bits but i love them :D
I live in Pendle and just been talking to a visitor who was complaining about it being cold and overcast - I thought that it was nice November day!
I was in Kettlewell this morning buying some petrol and the garage man (probably recognising my softy southern accent) tried me out saying what a lovely day it was. I had him sussed though and said that if anything it was a bit too warm.
And anything less than 70 mile an hour winds and driving rain on Pendle is considered summer like :)
Sorry to revisit the old CP1 thread but surely this ain't the case. New CP1 is the new CP1. It's not 1A! Was out recceing today. Loads of navigating needed - which should speed me up on the day. Direct route to new CP1 across Barley Moor and ogden clough pretty straight forward, even in today's clag. Good luck to all on Sat

“2009 was the year I moved CP1 to the site shown on the attached sketch, “CP1 mods”. I had not thought about people taking a direct line across Barley Moor to the new location, the whole reason for moving CP1 was to keep people off it because of erosion, the whole area is a big sloppy mess, a paddy field and I do not want the race creating sloppy black paths across it.
The route to be followed from the start is past the Village Hall on the farm access road past the Res and on, when you come out of the trees and can see the damn of the second Res you can also see a concrete track in front of you to the right, rising to a gate in the wall. This gate will be marshaled on race day and will be open. You pass through the gate, turn right and climb with the wall on your right. Pass through the gates at the top of the field (also marshaled) and climb to the trig point on the Big End (this is CP10). Maintaining your line carry on to the gate and stile in front of you (the original site of CP1), cross the wall here using the stile or gate then head for CP1 (the gate in the wall before the stile) on the path at approx 45deg. to the wall you have just crossed. These are established paths, stoney or firm grass.
I expect all runners to follow that route and I expect any runners who see any other runners taking the direct line across Barley Moor to make a note of their numbers and I will disqualify them, they are cheating. Can I say it any planer. The reason I moved CP1 to its new location was solely to reduce erosion and minimize evidence of our presence on the hill. There are migrating birds who spend a couple of weeks on that area of moor on their way to somewhere and also on their way back, I’ve seen bird watchers observing them. In April and May it is a sea of snow white moorland cotton. The old path from Ogden Brook to the trig point has been flagged with stone slabs to protect it. We are not the only people concerned about it. Each runner must respect it and accept responsibility to preserve this area on race day.

Thanks for the info Kieran.
Anyone know if the cut off is considered 'tight' for this one? (I've got a 'diesel' engine - thats keeps breaking down :D.)
Surely, if it's compulsory to go to the old CP1 then it should still be CP1? Or at least should be marked/marshalled?
Will - I'm not sure what level you operate at but I reccied and managed in 1:45 quite OK and I'm usually in the last 3rd of these long races.
However, I'll probably be racing at recce pace now as I turned my ankle 10 days ago and just managed my test run last night - a 51 minute hilly road run. I've come through it quite OK, so it will be a case of starting off with a Half Tour recce in mind until CP4 and if still in one piece, go for a completion and be careful :)
Will, the cut-off won't trouble you I'm sure
These shoes might help descending Geronimo if you're struggling mind :closed:
the cut off is fairly relaxed, you should be fine; all the big hills are in the second half.
Advice to anyone who's not done this race before; ALL THE BIG HILLS ARE IN THE SECOND HALF!
It's easy to get carried away , then get to cp5 and realise what a huge mistake you've made!
Thanks for the clarification on the route to CP1 - makes alot of sense considering the ground conditions.
Cheers WP, DTand AndyA. Think I'll take a good steady approach. These AL fellraces take a bit of adjusting to after lots of Long LDWA type events over recent years - people really leg it and they're way quicker than I usually go.
are they still taking entries on the day? Just checking as don't want to travel all that way just to get turned down.
Ian,
Entry on day is still OK, but will cost you double the pre-entry fee, and no guaranteed T shirt - NB registration closes at 10am. I understand that Keiran had 371 pre-entries as at 16th Nov, although with the normal drop out rate there will probably be around 300 running!
I'll be at my normal marshalling points - gates at Buttock early on, and at the Trig for CP10. Usual jelly babies/flap jack will be on offer, with a limited supply of drinks (it is heavy to carry up). Say hello as you pass if you still have the strength after those 3 big climbs!!
See you Saturday
Ady from Accy will be snapping everyone. Give him a wave and a smile as you roar past.
No stopping for a photo shoot Steve - keep trotting on by and I will shout some abuse!
Watch out, Watch out, Pendle witches are about!! Take heed all ye who dare........
