A joke! And quite a funny one at that. Things are looking up.

And isn't that what I initially did in, after having read the article, pointing out that the conclusion you had posted wasn't valid and was an over-interpretation of the results reported in the article in that it removed all the associated uncertainty? That wasn't a dissection of your choice of wording but more of an analysis of your meaning. Don't you claim to have some knowledge of statistics? If so, surely you understand the importance of the concept of uncertainty. Or is it simply that you think that there's an unwritten rule on this forum that anyone who points out a mistake of understanding in one of your posts is, by definition, a pr*ck?
You were wrong in what you posted; I politely pointed that out; you got upset and called me a pr*ck. That's about the long and short of it. But, hey, I've been around the block a few times and I'm not going to get upset or lose any sleep over that.
Get yer sens off ta bed.
Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), I believe he was involved with salmon farming up in Scotland, whereas Roger was trout farming down in southern England. I stood in several times on his Dorset farm (covering managers holidays) and set up his rearingg farm near Rutland water. He also had his fishery in Sussex.
I could tell tales, but staying true to rock-'n'-roll "What goes on tour, stays ........".
Edit: I think he sold the farms many years back, but he had a canny business brain.
Errr, it wasn't a care home then
[QUOTE=Flem;663100]Good post (even though I do say so myself)!
Although I knew the name Bobby Day I wasn't aware that I'd actually heard any of his singing so I've just had a pleasant bit of a session on YouTube. Thanks for steering me to that. I think Ain't Gonna Cry No More is my favourite, although it's a pity about the double-negative and the generally appalling grammar of the title. The use of the word "Ain't" is so vulgar.
I have always found the business of popular music fascinating. Heroin dealers have more integrity than those who (used to) work in the record business, which in the rock 'n' roll days of cash was often organised crime.
The potential rewards for someone recording a self-penned hit song in, say, 20 minutes could be fantastic - £millions - but, as the saying goes, "where there's a hit there's a writ" or in the case of Bobby Fuller (I Fought The Law) murder (asphyxiation from gasoline after being beaten up, aged 22).
Ian Anderson, that's the man. I saw Jethro Tull in Frogner Park in Oslo in the early 1990s (a really laid-back affair and, for me at least, a very drunken one) and, even though I was (still) a lot fitter then than I am now, I remember being really impressed at how he bounced about the stage and just seemed to have enormous stamina. (He did disappear off stage every now and again, though, to leave the rest of them to perform a number without him. Perhaps he was getting an oxygen hit.)
Did Roger Daltrey have a canny business brain or a cannery one? (That joke would work better if he'd had a sardine farm.)
Go on, tell some tales. (Go on, go on, go on, go on, have a cup of tea.) "What goes on on tour" isn't the same as "what goes on in the fishery management office", so I'm sure you must have some leeway.
Well now. Let me see if I've got this right. We have a person who seems not to believe that the moon landings took place, another person who seems not to know the difference between the words 'could' and 'would' and who, furthermore, seems to think that anyone who does is a pedant, and a third person who seems to believe that there exists conclusive scientific proof that the Turin Shroud is genuine, or at least is not a fraud. These three people seem to be united in thinking that I'm a moronic pr*ck only interested in pedantry and with no cognisance of the scientific method and with no understanding of scientific evidence. Mmmh. I think, on reflection, I'm rather pleased to have that Holy Trinity ranged against me! I'd be very worried if they were singing my praises. And, on that note, I think I'll retire to bed.
Nay nay sir. At no point did I add the word “moronic” to your considered description!
I merely pointed out that yours ( and perhaps your alter egos grasp) of the less travelled parts of the oxford dictionary made you a suitable candidate to explain to Mr Mole that “posting to say he does not post” might attract the word oxymoron, in HIS case give or take the first three letters.
I would also care to point out that “ flem” has yet to take part in discussions on scientific evidence so perhaps select the right mask for the message! So says the forums bête noir!
I didn't really pick up on it when you posted this at the time. But I have to agree with you, it is pretty ridiculous that the Pillar 2 testing, (which is done in the community as opposed to clinical settings) has not been published at local level until now. The question has to be why ever not? People who have been looking at the small numbers of new infections in their locality have been living in a fool's paradise.
What's interesting however in the case of Leicester is that there may not be that much of a spike in actual new cases, but rather a large increase in Pillar 2 testing that has picked up cases, that weren't being picked up before. Looking at the graph in the FT article you linked to, the Pillar 1 cases have remained quite static. Apparently there has been no spike in hospital admissions in Leicester so far.
Neither do I.
Someone asked how long corona can last ex vivo.
I asked OH because it was relevant to the thread and question. I echoed the correct answer “ not very long” . The explanation I gave was squiffy, I misheard, but the answer I gave was correct.
Don’t recollect anyone asking about post fossa decompression.
If they do, you will be well placed to answer.
If you ever joined in a thread other than to insult contributors you might find the context for why some things are discussed.
It's rather disheartening that the most populated threads are full of petty squabbling, and people who generally appear to only log on to argue with each other.
I'm not complaining really, it's just a shame that so many regular contributors appear to have little interest in fellrunning. Threads like this and the Brexit and All Lives Matter threads, which seem to revert to an endless spiral of bickering, do little to enhance the reputation of the forum... wouldn't be quite so noticeable if other parts of the forum were a little busier...
We all slate the facebook page (usually with good reason) and there has been some utter bollocks published on there over recent months. But at least there is also a healthy dose of fell talk, discussion about past races and racers, etc...
Is a bit of a shame because this place is an absolute goldmine of info and experience... but whenever I mention the forum to a non-forumite at a race, they look at me like i'm mad (may be accurate!)
Trouble is.
For most of us fellrunning has been kyboshed by corona. Fell racing certainly has.
Few of us live in places we can train from the front door.
So corona has become THE topic, not just a topic.
And when corona gets discussed, many use it as a weapon to overlay political views, regardless of how it was actually affected by any decisions made. A passport to going down hill.
It’s hard to have discussions on other stuff about fellrunning when no fell racing is happening.
I have started threads on laces, pills, shoes and other things. There is a limit to how much there is to say.
Yes, i'm probably being a little hypocritical, is I've jumped in and out of all the threads which I've criticised above...
However... i'd like to think I've contributed to them without alluding that anybody is a moron/prick/racist/snowflake/right-wing bigot/screeching leftie/all of the above...…
I think the above topics do have their place on the forum. Various music and football forums which I am occasional members of, all have the same, and in fact they all end up the same way... squabbling and insults.
However I had always thought that those who ran on the fells were generally a good-humoured, thick-skinned bunch... It seems there are a fair amount who either...
- repeat their viewpoints ad-nauseum until everyone is sick of hearing it
- stomp off the forum because someone has dared to have an opposing viewpoint
- descend into insults
it's generally the kind of thing i'd expect to see on a foum full of people who hero-worship a bunch of over paid cheating footballers... if you measure your life by the performance of 11 strangers then you probably haven't got much else going on apart from bickering on a football forum...
but i'd have thought people who can voluntarily put themselves through the hardships on the hills, have a bit more about them and could laugh off opposing views, whatever their educational/political background...
Right... that's enough from me, i'll be back in the Today's Training thread...
Travs, I feel really sorry for you (and Mike T). As I said recently to a new member asking about the BG this forum used to be brilliant with a large group of members who knew each other in ‘real life’. They’d meet up at races, recce together and go out socially too. The vast majority of the people who supported both my and my wife’s BGs were met through the forum. A load came to our wedding (we met on here). Occasional trolls turned up and there was the squabbling you see on many forums but generally it was good
Unfortunately I think firstly a move over to FB and latterly a small but active group of political posters have more or less killed things. As you say no-one wants to talk fellrunning here any more. The thread I started recently was a ploy to see if we could drum up some interest but the response was disappointing. The really sad thing is most of the political posters aren’t even fellrunners. At least two are anonymous or think they are. All very sad. I’d close the forum down and have felt like that for well over six months. I knew lots of old regulars who think the same. It’s a sick dinosaur and should be put out of its misery
I've met many forumites… in fact most of the people I know through fellrunning have came either directly or indirectly through the forum.
There's too much great info on this forum for it to be just closed down. Some of the info you can get on the race posts is unbelievable... i'd still be trying to get out the forest section on the 2015 Black Mountains race if it wasn't for the info I found on here...!
I still think the forum is a great place... certainly superior to the facebook page in all aspects (except perhaps immediate access to results and photos). But it's definitely old-school.... I saw our friend Llani Boy make a comment on a facebook thread as to why people on there are so reliant on gps to get them round a route... you'd think he'd head-butted someone's sainted mother, judging by the response he got...
I'd like to think that I'm thick skinned - I'm still on here - just :D
I also try to be good humoured - but I also care and so that sometimes maybe comes through with a touch of frustration.
Some clearly aren't comfortable with the use of words like "prick" - it's how I speak - just me - a northern lad - I use it where others would use other words but it means the same and isn't meant maliciously. It's hard to be malicious to a hidden ID.
I just had a look through my threads started by me. A fair mix. Less running and fell related lately but I've hardly been able to run on the fells much the last two years.
I did come across one shocker though - the Cyril Smith RIP thread :O
A few gave our regards - with daz h the exception. 2 years later Danbert advised that he'd been up to no good.
In think it is a great shame that someone saw fit to start the FB group which as far as I know has no official standing unlike this forum. Much of the running discussion must have migrated there and I believe some announcements (championships etc) are made on there. FB seems to have taken over so much of peoples lives and watered down meaningful / useful discussions and polarised opinions.
There actually is an official FRA Facebook group - I think it is called The Fell Runners Association, or something similar. It is very rarely used, and only for official statements.
Interestingly in a recent debate on that page, a prominent person in one of the regional associations described a senior FRA committee member as a "prick" (that word keeps coming back!)
The facebook page which we generally all refer to is Fell Runners UK and is indeed not officially tied to the FRA...
I think the fact that new members do still pop up on here asking questions, shows that the forum is worthwhile… there may be less of a response than the facebook page, but the info on here is generally worth listening to (quality not quantity!)
Disappointed to hear people are not posting but it’s probably for the same reason I’ve actually made a few posts, I think there is some good info and ref to sources in the posts, some of which I have sought out and read, whether I agree with it or not is another matter but that doesn’t stop me reading it and increasing my general knowledge which must be a good thing. It also helps me understand if the info has been used in context or where the poster has taken a bit of a liberty.
Plenty of good stuff even from those who denounce our scientific establishments & / or newspapers and refuse to even look at them because they express a different view. Don’t lower yourself to that level, I have found that to be a bad approach, when you sift through the info, even though it uses up precious time you find the odd wee golden nugget that saves the day, and improves your general knowledge.
I notice the posts tend to become long, (?) include statements not fully connected, a bit of new stuff, some info references and some repetitive opinion on demons, possibly the poster thinks this will encourage you to responding or if they keep repeating the same stuff you might actually believe it or think it meaningful.
Recent demons have included Public sector pensions, the variety of Scientific advice given to (poor) Boris, poor Boris, lazy Teachers, demanding Unions, Imperial College, Corbynista (I have a very nice photo of Jeremy with Dalmation ears and nose).
I have to laugh when every financial or systematic trouble is flagged up against the Left, not the poor Tory. When you look back over the last 50 years the Government has been Tory about 70% of the time. Hopefully they improve.
As I said I think there is some good info in there but in regards to Oracle I do like one of dictionary.coms definitions,(#1) “an utterance, often ambiguous or obscure, given by a priest or priestess at a shrine as the response of a god to an inquiry”. He may prefer one of the other definitions.
In the words of a bard; O wad some Power the giftie gie us, to see oursels as ithers see us. Happy posting.
A few comments from an ‘anonymous’ ‘new’ member 😊:
1. The vast majority of user names on here are anonymous (derby tup, muddy retriever, the oracle etc) and it’s only really over time that people have become (sometimes) known
2. An anonymous comment is just as valid as a non-anonymous one if what they’re saying makes sense or at least has a point
3. I can’t talk for anyone else but I am a fell runner through and through and run from home in the fells every single (uninjured) day. The trouble is there’s not much left to say about fell running on here, partly because right now no fell races are actually happening, but mainly it seems because most of the remaining hard core posters here don’t actually run in the fells. Stagger posts about golf ffs!
4. Running in the hills and mountains is very much a visual thing to me and fell running is often best viewed that way. It’s more a thing you do and if you can’t do it you at least look at the mountains and other people doing it. This forum to me isn’t visual in any way and being stupidly fiddly to post pictures on doesn’t help
5. The forum also became over the years an increasingly unfriendly place that absolutely put off many of the old regular contributors. Especially females, like onehillwonder and Emmilou (both of whom I’m still in contact with on Facebook and Instagram), but many others too. And if someone really new posts on one of the many fell running threads here, they very rarely even get acknowledged or replied to anyway
6. The remaining hard core now like to look down on Facebook, judging it perhaps just by the fell running group page, but like travs said that has lots of race pictures and results, neither of which you see here, and even when racing isn’t happening it has pictures of people actually running in the fells and people actually posting enthusiastically about their hobby
7. But it’s not just about the Facebook fell running page anyway. There’s shed loads of specialist fell, ultra, trail and running groups on Facebook, as well as dedicated race pages and obviously local club group pages. A huge portion of my fb friends are fell runners and we keep in touch directly that way. I personally don’t post much on Facebook nowadays to be fair but I do know that I can go there and tap into really positive fell running stuff whenever I want to
8. So what’s left to tap into here?
9. Well, to me, choosing to occasionally drive a coach and horses through some of the right wing and, occasionally, ultra right wing views of the bulk of the remaining membership is quite fun 😊
Your thread was a duplicate of an existing one ( permitted training) that respected the fact most of us cannot train on fells out of the door, so posted what training we could. You and mikeT are fortunate, but he continued to post on my thread about training, I thank him for that your thread was a little redundant, and in any case said little about fellrunning!
The reality rather than myth, is that endless political posts were made by stalwarts since time in memoriam and especially since 2015. And so long as you were anti Brexit, anti Tory, NHS underfunded etc, it was classified acceptable “ humour” . Those who knew the reality of EU saw and posted a different side. OnLy their posts are classified unacceptable as “ political posters not fell runners”: it is they have received the torrent of abuse. Any poster anti Brexit should be able to defend their view. I didn’t start those discussions.
I share travs disdain for the FB group.
Which is part of why I drifted here,
The Dave mole and Mattpos of this world seemingly only ever post to attack other posters.to bemoan not contribute, including his thinly disguised attack on me as “ first responder”
Why do they not post interesting stuff? I answered mattpos posts on fave races that shows I’ve done many.
I’d happily wage a contest on BG route knowledge ( if anyone asks) or nuances on races such as duddon or borrowdale.
I’ve spent a lifetime learning them. I’m clearly a fell runner.
They are not happening this year!! So hard to discuss.
As for non fell runners perhaps it needs considering FRA chairman is not other than casual.
In as far as anyone can tell. Does it disqualify?
Many can’t run as far as they did, me included. Many have had to stop running, as Geoffb has said. Age will come to you too, DT.
Does it disqualify them?
Well done Beasty boy. Fancy a round of golf and I'm yer man
"He may prefer one of the other definitions".
Like Teletext, Oracle is one dimensional and obsolete.
