Short eared owl on the ridge line up to Snailsden trig
I was surprised to see a cormorant at Angle Tarn (Ullswater) last year.
Disturbed a buzzard in the woods above the sawmill last night, it flew off from no more than 5ft away....what a sight!
A couple of weeks ago, we watched an otter shuffling down the shore into Loch Carron.
Deer, although it was in a deer park in the New Forest, so not highly unexpected.

Ant attack!!!!
On my ass too, having sat down (on an ant hill) to take in a fabulous view. A brilliant outing all the same :)

Did you see the white deer?
Just had a HUGE fly in the house. It was the shape of a bumblebee, flew at the same kind of speed and intensity as a bluebottle, was black and had a dusky orange/yellow head.
Im at a loss as to the type of fly it was. Anyone got any ideas out there?
Seen a few strange things recently. A black rabbit on Ilkley moor, and a family of chipmunks by the side of the road near otley being the two strangest.
Also saw deer today in the woods near Simon's seat (not so strange)
A more exciting one than the fly this morning.
Out on Black hill, right next to the Swordfish wreck we stumbled upon a Short eared owl. He was about 5ft from me on the ground, and from the way he stared at me through big evil orange eyes I think we were both about as scared as each other.
Also saw kestrels, grouse, a lizard, buzzards, a whinchat and some woman with a laptop complaining she couldn't get signal in order to put her out of office on.
(not all in the same place, I must hasten to add)
I googled 'large black fly with orange head' images :D and found this:

If you then google Tachina Grossa in the image sections you get lots of photos that fit your description. (I'm killing time before my yoga session and my mum's a zoologist so I've inherited a geeky enjoyment in identifying things:D )
does that help?
Thats the Badger. (figuratively speaking)

Fantastic pictures as usual Wharfee.
I was at a client’s house the other afternoon, a lovely old couple, and they’d just sprayed and killed what they thought to be half a dozen wasps in their porch and, while standing well back, gave me all sorts of warnings and be carefuls as I trapsed through the 'wasp' corpses and into the house. And then this morning even my very bestest of best friends commented on how lovely all the 'bees' were in the honeysuckle over the porch.
In both cases they weren’t wasps or bees, they were hoverflies which I absolutely adore and are completely harmless. They also look nothing like wasps or honey bees. For the sake of the gormless:

they are all in my conservatory at the moment!
william,we think the mink has taken the grebe and moorhens as not seen here or any of the local waterways for a while.
we have set a trap but think its gone.
the trap remains.
saw a newt in the garden today.
Three peacock butterflies with clouds of small whites on a big patch of thistles in flower near Eccup Reservoir. Must have been freshly hatched - their wings quite perfect with the most beautiful, dazzling "eyes".
A group of Quail on the side of Hamildon hill today, had to look in me bird handbook when i got home to make sure.
still getting swooped at by pesky seagulls, one today was quite persistant in his swooping and actually tried to shit on me, heard it rain down hitting the floor like machine gun fire just yards from me
found climbing th garage door tonight, think its a newt, have quite a few about the garden, but someone said its a lizard, what do you think.

In the dark tonight, running up the slope towards Attermire scar, hundreds of black slugs on the wet grass. After picking my way through, passed one, then another meaty frog out for the buffet. The first surprised me by jumping into my foot, just managed to avoid treading on it.
Saw what I think was a young cuckoo hopping along a wall yesterday. It was up on Addingham moorside, nearer SIlsden really, in an area where cuckoos could be heard earlier in the year. It kept itself just a bit too far in front to be easily identified, but was a bit smaller than a kestrel but defo bigger than say, a blackbird. rough outline like a raptor but a kind of arched posture with shortish legs...
a few marmotts yesterday basking on the slopes while walking and a pair of peregrines on todays big climb, seen plenty of buzzards over the last two weeks and a Kite.
No eagles though which is a bit disappointing
Marmots? Eagles? I take it you're not on Ilkley Moor then!
Another nocturnal run in Settle, one startled looking hedgehog that curled up as I ran past on banks lane, one large frog sat in the middle of the road on constitution hill as I came back down. It hopped off in listless annoyance when I leant in to try and identify it. Must start carrying a camera.
A Short eared owl on the northern path of Black Hill. A couple of rabbits at Crowden. I also nearly trod on a mountain Hare at Black Hill End, it shot off at a speed I can only dream of achieving.
Peregrine Falcon, taking off from Shelf Benches, floating around for a bit, and then soaring off over towards the East.
Im pretty sure it was a peregrine.
Too large for a kestrel, wrong shaped wings for a buzzard (and a tad on the small side), certainly not a harrier. Can't think what other raptor it could be.
lots of hares on my bike ride this evening, always nice, but the best bit was a pair of barn owls hunting on the common...almost got a photo as one landed on a post but it watched me cycle downhill towards it, get my camera out and focus and then flew away just at the crucial moment!:D
Hare & plenty of rabbits on Meltham moor.
I was been buzzed by peregrines climbing up to Dog Rock by Shelf Benches a couple of years ago. Err.. I was climbing that is. They were flying.
Noticed something wedged in the grille of my car. On closer inspection it was a bat! Poor wee thing had obviously been there for a while since, when I pulled it out, a load of maggots fell out of it. Otherwise it was a perfectly preserved Lesser Horseshoe. Felt awful! (but not as bad as the poor bat!)
The irony is that I have been jumping through (v expensive) hoops recently regarding planning permission and bat conservation. My car has probably done more harm than the proposed building will ever do to the bat population!!!
Was running on the cliff path between Robin Hoods Bay and Ravenscar on Sunday afternoon. Some walkers coming in the opposite direction told me there was an Adder on the path 100 yards on. I poceeded warily to make sure I didn't tread on it. And there it was bold as brass on the edge of the path hissing away. I didn't hang about.
I saw a fox this evening. It is the first one I've seen since I've lived in the countryside. It was a slender thing, not like the big bruisers in the towns!
