yes yiannis I read about that - absolutely shocking
it is THE thing that makes me dubious about taking up road cycling as a serious hobby: I just don't see how you can really enjoy riding on roads - especiallly quick descents - where a serious accident is pretty much waiting round every corner
I think that's a bit of an over reaction.... they're both tragic accidents but, if you look at the stats for hours of participation vs accidents for cycling, you'll see that it's pretty safe. As for there being a serious accident waiting around every corner, it really depends on how you choose to ride and your level of skill. Yes there's the unknown factor of other road users but, as long as you're sensible and minimise risk such as not hammering round blind bends, you should be fine.
well OK - but I'm not talking about those news reports, more based on my own experience of riding around south-west London. OK, a totally skewed experience, I admit.
But I look at the closest 'riding country' though and it's Surrey Hills, where people drive Chelsea Tactors round narrow country lanes like they own the place. Which they probably do.
If I lived in France, I reckon I could get well into it.
Yiannis I was shocked when I heard about that one. Another really awful incident.
I can understand your comment about cycling where cars go is plain dangerous but the problem in a lot of cases is that the motorists get off very lightly. You hear of drivers hitting cyclists and getting a tiny slap on the wrist. Its time the law came down harder.
Theres no one more safety minded than me, its my job. Im always looking ahead at work for potential hazards etc etc etc. I apply this to my road biking. I could go out here now and I bet out of the next 10 cyclists I see at least half will be wearing black. Tis why I wear team jerseys. What is easier to see( A black gilet or a red team jersey with flandria plastered over it?????.
I have 4 x red flashing lights on my bike in winter and two on the front ( total cost about 40 quid). YET I still see everyday cyclists with no lights on.
I think what helps as well is when you can ride in the flow. I realise not everyone can ride at 20mph and cars can be on a bike thats not travelling fast very quickly.
Also and Nikalas and others will tell you that roadsense is massive. A Roadman like myself who has been riding for over 30 years can look at an inexperienced rider and cringe, and I mean cringe.
I have lads who work under me that earn £ 25,000 a year and come to work on a battered mountain bike with no lights on. they couldnt ride a bike safely if they tried.
So its both sides really but I have to say its not that dangerous Yiannis if you are sensible.
