Re: Anni Waltz entries now on
I'll be the one in the lumo-green vest near the back, so you should have no trouble spotting/following me
your only problem will be resisting the urge to speed up and overtake :D

Wynn, just a thought; has it been impressed upon all the TWA entrants that their race will not be starting on the field?

I'm aware of where the start is, but don't let on to the others so I can get a bit of a head start on them :D

There are full details including map in the website: http://www.anniversarywaltz.co.uk/?page_id=125
There will be maps on display at the vilage hall with start, finish and checkpoints shown including suggested route between points.

Cheers Yiannis. It was just one of those thoughts that pops into your mind. Marshalling the starting line with half the competitors still on the other side of the valley!

Good point; but it doesn't say much for the reading and navigational skills of those intending to successfully complete the TWA. ;)
Next thing, Wynn will be flagging the route from the car park to registration.:)

Re: Anni Waltz entries now on
I was going to offer to marshal at this year's event but i'm on a stag do in Budapest. I've divided the course up into 3 training runs to do some time, is the route from CP1-2 via Littledale Edge or as the crow flies down and up to Hindscarth?

One of the skills to be learned. A clue - there is a technique called contouring. ;)
Yeah i know but there must be a known quickest route, i'll assume it's a contour just below the ridge line.

I think i'm going to go that route anyway, it's better training ultimately and a good opportunity for descent practice. However if i ever do the race i'll just keep my mouth shut and follow you lot :D

Don't fancy his chances of keeping that hairstyle intact if it's windy on the tops. :D
I was there 2 hours early today, i was the first on scene but it was easy to find. There's so much hairspray in that quiff i'd be more concerned about the fire hazard.
Further to my last post i actually hate contouring, it's obviously quicker in races but i'd make long detours to avoid it in training...it's crap.

When it's clear there is just about a definable line north of the ridge, but when the clag's really down the fence remains on the southern edge make a good 'handrail' to navigate by. The direct route looks hellishly steep down and up; be interested in your experience.
Sounds like you had enjoyable day at Causey. Glad there were no naked flames around. :)

Re: Anniversary Waltz
so I had a trot round on Saturday
we took a pretty direct line from Dalehead down to the tarn, which was as I remember: a bit tricky and quite slow, as an average descender.
But looking back up, the walkers' line - to the right as you look up, to the left if you're coming down off the top - looks far far quicker than either the direct line or the line that heads southish from the top for a bit (i.e., heading rightish from the top).
The latter might be better at Borrowdale cos you are heading for the right side of the tarn, but at the AW you're better off going left of the tarn, so I don't understand why anyone but the real crack descnder wouldn't take the walkers' line - or at least somewhere by the side of it on the nice grassy run?

Re: Anniversary Waltz
rats! somebody else has discovered my "secret" path! ;)

I'm sure the list will be updated in a few days following the last day of entries (today) so I wouldn't worry. They are pretty efficient.
