Today's Bike Ride

Questioni for you MTB'ers....

My rear disk brake is making a horrendous noise under braking. Ive had the bike a few months now and ive done maybe only 100 miles.

It used to be the case that it would only make the noice once the bike was wet and muddied up, but its now constant, when ever I squeeze the brakes.

Ive had the back wheel off, used some muc-off degreaser on the disk and the (dont know the technical term - if there is one) pad thingies and given them both a good scrub.

I then wheeled my bike round and round in a circle with the brake squeezed but just about allowing the back wheel to go round, trying to bed it in a little...but the noise is still there?

Any ideas, its literally too embarrasing to take it out anymore?

I know the feeling, my brakes squeal loudly too hehe!

I think the copper grease between the caliper and pad is the winner, I remember my cousin doing the same to his car disc brakes when they squealed.

You need to get new pads unless you can be arced to sand them and toe them in.

Clean the disc with some of that whisky from sainsburys.
Get new pads
Be careful when your cleaning the disc as they are sharp edged.
Get good quality pads

Al if your not sure how to toe your pads I'm sure there will be something on google , if not they can be set with some paper or card.
I use a piece of card.

Not sure about MTB but basically your altering the angle of the pads to the disc or rim.
I always do it with new brake pads.
Usually toe out. It's only about a millimetre mind.

So if you looked down at front pads, they would be angled out. Ya gets me.

I'm still full of cold, but was given a Garmin Forerunner 305 for Christmas & I've been desperate to give it a whirl. So fuelled on coffee & a big lump of Christmas cake I went out for a ride this morning.

I did a route I do fairly regularly & despite an elevated heart rate & coughing chunks up it was great to get off the turbo & on the real roads, which were in surprisingly good nick.

Anyhoo, the 305 clocked me at 42 miles with 3100ft. My old bike computer agrees with the distance as does MapMyRide, but MapMyRide puts the climb at about 2100ft.

How accurate is my 305 wrt height gained?

I sprayed some easy start on the disk to get all greasy bits off it seems to work on my 11 year old kona ( brakes are Hayes Nines)
but if you bought a bike with big skinny wheels drops n cantis you would just toe in the pads by 2 mm ;)

Ahh... the old Garmin height question...

Well done fellrunner.

No ride for me today as I stripped my Mercian down for it's winter service. It was due a new headset so I replaced that with a brand new sealed fsa one. New bottom bracket and a couple of new jockey wheels. Just a couple of hours including re setting the index gears and it's running perfect ready for the next one.
Had a look at the Athena group set in the bikeshop , nice and retro. Need to upgrade after winter. I've managed six years out of the mirage ergo levers and the same for the veloce rear mech.
So it's ten speed for next winter.
I doubt if there will ever be anything more reliable in road biking than a veloce square taper bottom bracket.
Hopefully a ride in the morning

Today and yesterday was on longridge fell up n down n around n around with the crosser, Have now sorted out a decent circuit with a good mix involving some good running n plenty of mud:w00t:
