ODG - Three Tarns - Crinkles - Blisco - ODG. Just under 3 hours, 8.23 miles, 3415 ft. Constant drizzle, and a cold wind from the NW; poor visibility from half way up. Glad to finish. Got into bed to warm up - I don't like having a shower when cold.

Been trying to get under 23 minutes for a Parkrun since March. 2020 and 22.57 in Newtown - Mid Wales and then 22.53 today at Fountains Abbey. Well pleased; so now back to fell running!
Not sure I'm cut out for this. Off to do a steady 6-7 mile/1200ft or so around Billinge Woods but 2 miles in turned my left ankle.
Tried to walk it off for 15 minutes or so, but couldn't get running again so headed off home.
4.8 mile 935ft 73 minutes
Looks like bike for the next week with a canal run if I'm lucky next weekend.
Not done any running (or cycling) since before Christmas as I've been struggling with a viral throat infection. Feeling like I'm back to 90% fitness now so took on the Fladbury Festive 5 trail race, more as a training run than anything. The ROs briefing of doom regarding mud didn't seem to materialise or perhaps they are just fair weather runners in the Evesham vale and not used to the mudfest we normally contend with in North Worcs! Admittedly the 2km along the River Avon was reasonably muddy and I did struggle for grip at times but elsewhere it was pretty fast going on farm roads and hard footpaths. A most enjoyable morning and pleased to get round the 5.5 miles in 20th place and 41.20 - about a minute or so slower than my CR. Perhaps the break has done me more good than harm.
Back on the bike tomorrow.
48 miles 10,900ft this week.
Brings another 10 week block to an end, which averaged almost bang on 40 miles and 11,000ft per week.
With an absolute proliferation of races coming up (in the next ten week block I’ll have 9 races, 8 if I can drop a cross-country), I think it will be a case of recovery through the week, rather than getting much in the way of quality sessions in. Hopefully keep up the mileage/climb though, even if it’s all steady.
Calf giving a bit of jip after Saturdays XC so a 30 mile bike ride his morning, mainly on High Peak and Tissington trails. Dry but a very cold and gusty wind.
4 mile walk with dogs this afternoon when it must have been at least 5 degrees warmer!
Back on the track tonight for the first club session of the year.
16 x 400m with 100metres walk/jog recovery.
After a hectic racing schedule over xmas, feeling mentally sharp and really wanting to push hard, but the legs are disagreeing at the moment... probably unsurprisingly feeling rather tight, especially in the hamstrings, so couldn’t go full pelt...
So it was a case of digging in and focusing on staying on the back of my little group. By the end of the 16 i’d only dropped about 5 seconds off the back of the group, so went well enough.
8.5 miles, of which 4 were track effort.
Cross country again Saturday so will be very steady all the way until then!
Another 30 mile bike ride yesterday, trying to save the calf for tonights RATRun.
11.5 miles, all fairly steady, on the inner city streets of Cov...
Can only describe the weather as absolutely pissing down.
But good miles in the bank for a midweek session, and apparently it’s “character building....”
A lovely dry and clear moonlit evening for tonight's 7mile and 1'300 feet RATRun from The Quiet Woman, Earl Sterndale which took in Chrome,Parkhouse and Hitter hills.
A welcoming open fire was blazing in this fantastic time warp hostelry where pork pie was washed down with Marstons EPA and a delicious XL Mild.
Yes AK, the sign is a cracker but I suspect it would not be allowed these days. Fortunately the easily offended snowflake brigade have not found Earl Sterndale yet.
As for the inside it looks as if it hasn't changed much for the last 50 or 60 years and if you are in the area, pop in, as the landlord Ken will not be around forever!
A gentle, easy on the calf, 7 miles and only 750ft around soft local fields this morning in dead on an hour.
Lovely 2hr run anticlockwise around Barden Moor with a friend - Rombalds Stride training.
Last week was a disaster after the ankle turn.
90 minutes on the exercise bike over two stints.
A Saturday short 3.15 mile / 28:43 trot around the cycle paths of Witton to test the ankle - it was almost OK.
Perhaps the best work out of the week was at my sister-in-law's 40th on Saturday night, spending the best part of 2 hours on the dance floor
Started back today with an early morning undulating 3 miler on road, 26:30
well done on your festive training, all.
2020 training started properly after wronging my ankle playing footy on boxing day.
Squats yesterday morning, then a 6-mile pain-free run last night.
Deadlifts today.
planning a couple of big long fell/xc runs in the next few weeks ahead of a crack at Northumberland’s own McWilliams round.
4.5 miles on the roads, followed by 8 x half mile reps with 75 seconds rest.
Thoroughly miserable and grim tonight. Won’t go too overboard with the weather, as there’s people out there on the Spine suffering much worse conditions... but constant hammering rain, and the wind was strong enough that I watched a couple of people in front of me on the reps “drafting” to try and minimise the wind!
Grand total of 10.5 miles tonight of which 4 miles were effort...
Aye on my little 6-mile rehab run where I nearly drowned, I couldn’t help but think of the poor souls doing the Spine!
Squats and presses today.
Presses might sound like a weird one for a runner, but I’m convinced there’s a benefit to strong shoulders when uphilling, so I’m getting into them.
Day off tomorrow, then a big long run in the cheviots on Friday — might drop off some snacks at Hut 2!
I'm a big believer in having a (relatively) strong upper body for running. Presses, pulls, core work, rope climbs... Think there's a thread covering this subject pretty comprehensively down the page a bit... edit: yes it's just below!!
Woke up this morning feeling like my knee has been attacked by a hammer overnight.
So Blues will be playing away at home then!?
I expect some kind of arrangement will be made which will involve Blues getting a much larger section than just the away end.... perhaps two stands each.
I work in Birmingham and seems to be a lot of anticipation at the novelty value of this fixture.
I'm a little more worried that there could be trouble (CCFC vs Blues games have had their fair share over the years) which could damage the goodwill between the fans, and possible repercussions with the ground share... although it's more likely that the fans would take the thick end of that rather than the club.
We've also got Sunderland coming up soon at 'home'... which if anything like last year's games then forget about Iran, it could be like WW3 and WW4 rolled into one around Small Heath and New St Station...
warm up, 6 x strides of minimum 1 minute (sub 7 min mile pace) on canal with 30 second walk recovery, cool down.
3.1 miles, 29 mins
steady 5 mile undulating multi-terrain run around Witton.
49 minutes.
3 days on the bounce - getting carried away :D
18 miles in the cheviot hills, trying to a) push as hard as I could without ‘racing’ and b) make do with as little fuel as i could. Managed 3h30 on a bowl of porridge for breakfast and basically 2 wee samosas a couple of hours in, so mission accomplished.
back to the office now.
Did a new parkrun for me at Warwick Racecourse... 90% flat as a pancake, except for a hill at halfway which was nothing major.
A fairly good standard... on a very icy morning where the start was diverted around the very worst parts, I ran a steady (if not lacklustre) 19:27, and there were a good 25 people in front of me.
5 miles, 46 minutes.
Cars were iced up, but underfoot was fine. Canal and quite roads.
Yesterday's training turned out to be a 10 mile "interval" session. I have a running group at work who are taking on the Stourbridge Stagger again this year so we all set off on a bit of a recce. 2 of us (and my dog) were comfortable at sub 5min kms so it turned into a bit of a blast for a 1000m followed by a recovery period whilst the remainder caught up. Plenty of ice, mud and fog to spice things up. Unfortunately the lack of visibility also resulted in 2 runners getting lost and doing an alternative 5 mile road run. Hopefully won't be doing that race day...
Approx 15km/250m
First time I've been able to get on this week I think.
Monday - 30 minute exercise bike
Tuesday - 4 miles grass run 39 minutes - squelchy
Today - 4 miles gravel tracks - 37 minutes.
5 miles, 50 minutes, 400ft.
Probably picked the wrong day to add a little climb in to the run after my ankle turn. A glass of red either side of half-time and then a large Scapa to celebrate the win last night took their toll this morning :D
Up the Clarets!
Very unseasonably mild weather for tonight's 8 mile RATRun from The Bulls Head, Monyash. Mainly over fields around Flagg, Sheldon and Monyash many of which had a liberal covering of cowshit/slurry.
However, back at The Bull our nostrils were cleansed with the smell of Cheesy Chips and Nachos washed down with Farmers Blonde and a very well kept Black Sheep.
5.30 mile, 500ft, 52 minutes
Warm up, Witton Parkrun, Cool down
Nice morning and it's a tough little workout around Witton.
11km/600m on a very wet and exceedingly muddy Walton Hill. Hard work in the wind and rain and felt harder than it should after a long hard week at work.
Monday 3.3 mile 30 mins on the Witton trails
Tuesday 2 x 3 miles with 5 hours recovery.
Had to collect car from Mrs WP's work, so ran over the 3 miles exactly, back home and packed my orders, drive to Rossy to get my back upper right molar removed as it has been giving me jiff for some time.
Back home, felt OK so dropped car off for her and ran back.
26:53 there, 26:18 back, so quite happy with that.
Quicker on the way back as you were lighter without the Molar!
Possibly, but more likely that the outward leg gains around 100ft overall and the return descends 100ft. Although the morning was good weather and the return a brick wall wind for around 1/2 of it.
Anyway, today I've managed to post on the actual day, and I managed a steady 5.1 mile, 52 mins, 500ft so managing to maintain a slow increase in mileage for the last few weeks which I hope continues.
Tonight's RATRun was from The George Hotel, Youlgreave. An 8 mile and, 1,000 ft run over varied terrain on another very mild January evening. Back at the George, sausage roll and cheesy chips were washed down with a couple of pints of a very good Yorkshire Blonde from Ossett Brewery.
Yesterday's head-torcher was around the Clent lanes including the "delightful" climb of Winwood Heath Road.
Had to cut this short at 8km/250m as had severe cramp in my right calf. Pain still there this morning so obvs more than cramp but hoping to shake it off by Sunday as I have a trail race (and LMVs next week.)
PeteS I noticed your name on the start list for Long Mynd Valleys next weekend! A race as tough as any...!
I can certainly vouch for that - LMVs is about as tough as it comes. I was hoping to do the entire Shropshire winter series but unfortunately the calf has taken a turn for the worse after this morning's Stourbridge Stagger. We'll see what a week of ice and light stretching brings but would not be fancying the climb up Yearlet in the state it is now.
