Not really, My good friend Rudolph is giving you an option. I suspect that most will cross the stream but feel free to go either way. having run both I was alot quicker on the on RH bank. should cramp be taking ahold then there are one or two spots where you are stooping under trees on the LHB.
I might pop over to the crossing tomorrow and take a picture and post it on here.

Speaking to a very well known and annoyed runner today- on our mini reece it became obvious the ethos of the event has been lost due to restrictions etc

The only restriction that I can see is on the route from Black Hill to Crowden, a minor one. There does not appear to be a restriction after Crowden. The Shooting area was out of bounds before. The Snake road change is an improvement.

I am semi-hijacking this thread!
Is anybody driving back up to the start after the race, as I would deeply appreciate a lift.
I tried getting transport sorted though the Car Share thread, but in the end it came to nought as my fellow Leodensians have pretty much all dropped out.
failing a straight lift I am happy to do an early morning pick up at Edale and drive to the start.
cheers

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
Crowden can only be a matter of poor organisation. It will be interesting if say RhysFR (my bet to win) is only a couple of minutes outside the record cos arguably there will be complaints.

There has been a lot of confusion about "Skew Bridge" and "the area around WBC" so some people, (me included) have got the impression that this year is more restricted than pevious years. But some great posts on the forum have cleared up all those misunderstandings.

Hi Adam
I'm leaving my car at Edale on Saturday afternoon as I live near the Marsden end. I currently have 2 people to bring back but you are more than welcome to hop in. I expect to run the race in just under 5 hours but please PM and I'll give you my mobile number.

Please don't complain, I want to do this next year so don't annoy the orgaiser or there may be no race. It's hard work getting permissions etc and Clair is not a runner and I suspect doesn't (or didn't) know the route as intimately as many on the forum. The route will be slightly slower anyway this year due to the Snake road being out of bounds, something asked for on this forum if I'm not mistaken.

I doubt anyone would get near the record, whichever route is chosen.

Il do my best Tom lad, but Iv had a wee cold the last 10 days which whilst nothing serious, and Il certainly be giving it 110% as per, I still dont think Il be getting ahead of Oli Johnson, cold or no cold. Im just not at his level, see Langdale results!
But il do my best to put the wind up him ;)

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is

Not sure but expect to be 20-30minutes longer than last year. I did sub 3.30 last year but just hoping to get under 4 this year

were you out reccing today!

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
What is the opinion of the more experienced runners would ye prefer this harsh weather to continue of would ye prefer it to get a bit milder and softer ground.
I found the frozen ground hard work on Friday where is was all churned up. I slipped quite a few times coming down from Kinder, think my old Mud Claws are gitting a bit tired.
-
Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
Swings and roundabouts innit. Frozen ground good going up but a reet bugger goin down.

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
I have URGENT NOTIFICATION!!!!
I am so so sorry to have to do this to you guys but i have had an email today from one of the land owners who have sent me a bit of a curved ball and to be honest there is no way out of it!!!
In short, as well as the restriction from Blackhill I have been told that runners must go to the West of Torside Reservoir and through Reeps and up Torside Clough to Bleaklow. This now rules out going East and taking a route near Wildboar Clough/Lawrence Edge. This has been communicated to WHMR also who are supporting the course being a slightly more restricted area especially with the current weather conditions (they are being postioned along the route).
I have been advised that there will be members of NT, UU and RSPB in the area on the day so please can I ask if you can stick to the restrictions. I realise that they are annoying and it 'ruins the spirit' of the run and I'm sure it will be blamed on poor organisation too, but in the end, times change; the environment is 'being protected' and much money is being spent on maintaining the areas that we all love and appreciate!!
What it comes down to is that as RO I need to change the way that we approach asking for permission as it has been done over many years, and try to negotiate a more free path. This will be done in conjunction with the Fell Runners Association.
I also want to clear up what may be an error on my part not reading the map correctly with regards to the entry into lady clough. When I reccied the area the sign clearly stated Doctors Gate however I have just been advised that this known as Upper North Grain - the grid reference is correct but the name perhaps isn't!!
Please can i ask for all runners to consider the effort that is put into organising this event bearing in mind we have nearly 200 runners and i want this event to continue to be held for many many years to come!!!
Also please note that due to the weather conditions we are experiencing at present there is a high risk that the event will be cancelled!! This is not only taking into consideration the safety of the runners but also the safety of the event team and the support drivers especially when considering parking at Crowden and Snake. I am watching the forecasts closely all week and will be taking advise from the Highways Agency and Derbyshire Police. A decision will be made at 12.00 hrs on Friday 3rd December!
Thank you for your consideration!!!
Clair

Thanks Clair - all your hard work is appreciated.

Ditto.
just hope we get to run out. I have been looking forward to this for ages!

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
it's been run in worse conditions....when Andy Trigg coasted a path in snow....roll on next week!
-
Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
Thanks for the info Clair. Ignore the poor organisation comment, it was lazy and disrespectful and I am sure if the person thought about it he would regret making it. You are doing a great job that is much appreciated.
Fingers crossed the race will be on!!

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
Looks like Tanky's is off then... Even without the weather, it won't be the Trog without route choice

If you have a look at my posting at the top of page 151 you will get an idea of the type of work going on Bleaklow at the moment. The water company does own this land and they have an interest in preserving it. Real conflict in preseving the landscape and being able to enjoy it.
After all the training I have done for it it would be terrible for it to be cancled. But I suppose a few people will go for a "traning run" from Marsden to Edale on Sunday regardless.

And we may be out longer yet. It seems Clair has met a brick wall from almost all of the landowners, which is a shame. Her latest update states "...............and up Torside Clough to Bleaklow" which sounds like even the cut through over Harrop, Shelf Moor reverse, the trig and onwards is now banned .
So the only permissable route is from Wildboar Grain to Hern Stones? That's another lengthy diversion. Not sure this would be the route of choice for many, right?
-
Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
I'm sure many people will be disappointed if Tanky's has to be cancelled as I was one year in the late 90s when it was cancelled because of snow. On that occasion it was decided, after inspecting some of the route, that the snow made going so much slower that, apart from any other consideration, there weren't enough daylight hours at that time of year to be confident that everyone could finish before darkness fell.
Looking at last year's results the last 20 runners took between five and a half and just over 6 hours - with a start time of 9 a.m. it would have been about 3 p.m. when the last runner finished. Given that the Snake road is out of bounds this year, even with good conditions, times will inevitably be slower.
So please be supportive of Clair should she decide to cancel the race in the interests of safety.
-
Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
I'm impressed Clair persisted through all the landowners preferences and rules and for sure she wouldn't cancel the race after all her hard work without a VERY good reason. Thanks Clair whatever happens.
It does seem there's a lot more of this access restriction going on now. As DrPB said, a conflict, but not as in a war, just a balance that has to be struck and after all we are lucky that we can run all over the place in any disorganised way and time we choose.

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
Thanks for messages of support!!! MUCH appreciated!
Note: from Torside Castles the route is open; restriction was to here only.
I would think that under the current conditions any delicate areas would be covered with snow and ice anyway!!!
Can't believe how much snow we've got!!

Ditto the thanks for the hard work, I am slowly starting to realise just how much work has to go into organising an event on this scale.

Hi guys!
Looking forward to the Trog this weekend - does anyone have (or know of a fellow racer who has) room in their car for a wee one? Struggling to find a lift up to Marsden from Edale on Sunday morning...

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
Might put the double (Tanky's and Gravy Pud) off for another year... :)

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
Ran up onto Black Hill from Holmfirth today - conditions are going to make for a very interesting race. There's about a foot of soft powdery snow on most of the Black Hill plateau, but it's much deeper in the groughs and where it has drifted. Following the Pennine Way is difficult and in places it is completely filled in with powder - I was floundering about up to my waist a few times. From the summit I took the Holme Moss route so can't comment on the route to Crowden but I would imagine that it will be slow going. And then there's Bleaklow to look forward too. More snow on the way tonight apparently...
Hope it all goes well - it should be a real adventure!

Re: Tanky's trog 5/12/2010 is
IMPORTANT!!!!!!!
I am very sorry to say but due to the conditions I am sadly cancelling the race on sunday. This is a real disappointment for me as this is only the second time in 38 years that it has been cancelled!
I am sure you appreciate that with the current conditions, although the sun may come out!, the combination of the amount of snow deposited and the drifting means that the conditions will be very slow and dangerous, even though much fun too!! This is without considering the conditions of the roads and the parking hazards.
As you can imagine, much hard work has been put into the race so far and certain payments have had to be made. Once these have been taken out of the entry fees money, any remaining will be donated to charity which is primarily Woodhead Mountain Rescue. The £5 cancellation refund can be paid to you however can I ask if you can forward to me a stamped self addressed envelope to make the admin task a little less arduous!
I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the messages of support and for all those who volunteered to help. And also to the WH Mountain Rescue Team for there help in preparation!
Hope to see you all next year!! Unless we have started the Ice Age!! Please look out for tankys trog wesbite for next year and hopefully online payment and entry!!! Wow - technology!!
Regards
Clair
