I do agree with Scubagary. My post above was only intended as a suggestion in the eventuality that the down-and-up route remains the official course. It would be much simpler to go with the line of least resistance; by that stage, Hobblers only have eyes for the finish, and trying to prevent them from taking the obvious and shortest way will always be an effort.
However, for as long as we're told to head down to The Fleece, that's what we should do, but it ought to be enforced to prevent bad feeling right at the finish from marring a great event. Even at my end of the field - and God knows, I wasn't setting any records - a group that I'd been with or near since Stoodley Pike, and were only a few yards ahead of me, took the illegal route while I dutifully shuffled past bemused pedestrians and Japanese tourists, losing several minutes compared with them.
NO! NO! NO!
I could buy a whole bottle of my own. That'd be much more sensible.
I spent the last four hours muttering "Never again" and and promising myself I wouldn't weaken in my resolve.
(Which is exactly what I did on the previous six occasions.)
But...
NO! NO! No 'but'!!
But...
NO!
Well, we'll see.
It couldn't be as bad again, could it?
I'll be a bit fitter next year, won't I?
???
I will never forget staying at DIY's after a good drink in the Front Room and his old dog sneaking down the stairs and waking me up by licking the top of head. Proper hobbling
Great event as always. Yes I will admit I took my usual route, right from church and thru the health centre car park. Did not realise this was wrong but perhaps those of us that started way down the hill opposite the Fleece could not hear the instruction that morning ( we ran the extra then and even had to walk in the initial crush)
Think there were fewer tourists my way so perhaps it is safer?
Just remembered a young lad I passed just after Heptonstall. I was by no means moving well at that point but he looked about ready to drop. Anyway I trundled in from Heptonstall in 1hr40, then had time to stagger back to the b&b, have a half hour hot bath, get changed, walk back into the centre, and was sat outside the chippy when he came through. Must have taken 3 hours back from Heptonstall.
No matter how bad you feel, there's always someone worse off than yourself. Fair play to him for seeing it through.
Yes, believe some people went walk about.

Thanks for the photos, Dan, and thanks for turning out with little 'un to support us. I just about managed to get one of you on the fly as well. The best of mine are here.
Many thanks to Brett and all his helpers for yet another superb Hobble, which seems to go from strength to strength if that's possible. The weather smiled upon us this year as well. And thanks once again to Mr Brightside for the cheeky little snifter at Mankinholes. It lubricated the doughnut a treat (as if a jammy greasy doughball needs lubricating). ;)
My Haworth Hobble 'experience' :)
"My legs felt okay ironically but I was all round very weary for the last 11 or 12 miles". I had the opposite experience. I had enough endurance but my legs just wouldn't work. I struggled even to walk the steep downhill into Hebden Bridge and seriously thought I might have to give up. Then the steps. Aaaarrrrgh! But the road up to Heptonstall was okay: a very slow but steady walk. Then I struggled again to get down the track. Going up from Horse Bridge (still walking - I walked most of the last seven miles) I even managed to overtake a handful of people.
But what a tremendous event! Superbly organised (thanks everyone), blessed with near-perfect weather, and what magnificent terrain! It had been "on the radar" for me for a while, and although I was a bit disappointed with my time (over an hour slower than I had hoped for) it was a fantastic day out.

Another great Hobble - many thanks to Brett and KCAC. I've brought together links to race reports from Karen, Stolly & Nigel Aston, and to loads of photos, on the Runfurther.com news page. The race results are there too, and the initial Runfurther leaderboard.
Hope you get that foot sorted out soon Karen!
Entry came through today... Thank you Brett.
Hoping that pacing the first half of the race a bit better, will leave me a bit in the tank to push on the last 7 miles or so, where I capitulated last year...
Great race...
No problem, Travs - come and say hello
You'll be fine weeks to go for training....
Out of interest...

Might have to have set a limit - get your entries in sharpish... or PM me
Derby Tup is already in!!
I will be pottering round but maybe with one eye on first moderator ranking. Someone showed me a couple of short-cuts a few years ago, plus I'll have a Hebden-Haworth bus timetable in my bumbag
Filling up fast....
Me with my finger on the pulse and everything..
Is this year's Hobble part of some national trials or sumfink?
isnt it in the runfurther series or something?
Yes it's in the run further series.
I think it is also the trial race for the world or European long distance champs, or something similar.
Interestingly, I did the Lakes Mountain 42 last year and there was only 45-50ish runners, it's in the run further series this year and it's at full capacity (which albeit is only around 100)...
Can someone tell me what the quality of refreshments is like? I was well impressed by the nosh on the Bullock Smithy!
Hot cross buns, hot dogs and malt whisky
