11th april for another go round....
I had a trot around the TWA on Monday. Great route, but not easy by any means.
I think I could probably find a better line onto Grasmoor summit as I just stuck to the tourist path from Coledale Hause.
Coming off Whiteless Pike was where I dropped a cod though. I think I should have went left and descended Bleak Rigg then contoured Knott Rigg to Newlands Hause but I didn't go left early enough. I stayed on Whiteless Breast too long and had to descend to Sailbeck where Swinside Gill joins it then just went straight up from there and ran about 150 metres on the road to Newlands Hause.
Not getting that bit right has bugged me so much that I'm going back on Friday to do the whole lot again* :D
* not to mention the concern over making the cut off :o
On the OS 1:2500 map from Coledale going up the East side of Grasmoor take the line about midway between the green right of way (there is no path on the ground) and the path to the North (this does exist)
If the clag is down just trend slightly to the right as you climb and you will come across the Northern path which goes all the way to the summit.
On one of our recces someone went down Whiteless Breat but joined the path going up the North side of Swinside Gill and there wasn't much in it.Quote:

I'll be going down Bleak Rigg ;)
Had another go off whiteless pike and went down bleak rigg this time (without the snow). Too steep. Think I prefer whiteless breast option.
Had another go at this today and did much better than last Monday. Even made Newlands Hause with 15
minutes to spare so should hopefully be a bit quicker than that on the big day :D And yes, Bleak Rigg is steep
but it's a better bet than Whiteless Breast IMO.
Aah well...good luck to you and god help me. Several interesting route choices; outerside to coledale hause, this one, high snock rigg to robinson and the usual anniversary waltz ones.
Got a good idea of what I want to do, whether I'll have the courage to stick to it on the day is another question.
You'll be reet man no need to worry.
You're right about the route choices mind, but I'm going to stick to the ones I took on my recces as I know they work for me. If anyone wants to follow me they can though it's likely there will be no-one behind me to do so :D
Had a nice recce as far as Newlands Hause today. After looking at the map and reading the above comment, was fairly convinced I'd be heading down Whiteless Breast as well.....but actually that's not a bad descent at all down Bleak Rigg, made better (for me) by following the path to the first rocky drop then trending left on a good grassy line.
Otherwise, the route was an absolute cracker with the odd choice to make...Outerside to Coledale Hause, the race map suggests dropping right down to the path, I went up and over the crags...not much in it I'd reckon.
Pretty much walked it all until Grasmoor (trying not to trash the legs for the weekend), trotted from then on, pausing to look for best lines on the way down....and was about 2 mins over cut-off....so pleased to say it won't be a problem on the day as long as nothing major goes wrong!
