Thanks to all involved in the organisation in difficult conditions. In particular the marshals on the summits. Was particularly tricky on the rocky sections. Don't know the details but wishing a speedy recovery to the injured runner.
A little bit slower than last years times but to be expected I suppose considering the weather.
I noticed yesterday whilst doing my usual job of helping to marshal Bessyboot that this year just about everyone had their numbers clearly visible and unfolded or made sure that their number was in a position to be easily read or taken by the marshals. This certainly hasn't been the case in the past, maybe the fuss over the situation with this subject has done the trick
I was heartened by just how many runners said thanks to the marshals as they passed through. That's fell runners though, always appreciative of others giving their time for their benefit.
I hope that the injured runner is ok and not too seriously injured. It's also a worrying time for the race organisers, I heard Scoff say " I'll be glad when they are all back safely " as they waited on the field to see the runners arrive.
I'll echo dangilbert and thanks very much indeed to you and your fellow marshalls, Lefty -- I've never done one of these before but massively appreciated what you go through to get on station with your kit, hang around stationary in vile conditions, deal with semi-coherent runners, and then still have to get back down afterwards. (And I did make a point of saying thanks to many!) I was really impressed that split times were available at the finish too; given zero mobile coverage at Styhead at the very least, I guess that means some hi-tech radio connection.
I hadn't heard about the injured runner but saw an emergency ambulance approach from Keswick. Hope they're OK.
And thanks again to all those who gave this newbie generous helpings of advice after I started this thread! So to recap, I'm from Cambridge, where most of my fell training consisted of running up and down car park stairs, with a bit on the old castle mound. Encouraged by people on this forum last year, I asked if I'd be allowed in on the strength of having completed a solo BGR last year, and I was -- the guy on registration and a couple of others remembered my case, and gave me a nice bit of encouragement before and afterwards.
I finished in 4hr24, about an hour slower than I'd vaguely hoped. Comparing my splits with the well-named winner (congratulations there!), I wasn't so bad on the non-technical climbs of Bessyboot and Gable (about 26% slower), but my descents were hugely slower (50-75%), and I gaped in wonder sometimes at how fast runners left me downhill. Like an idiot I didn't take on enough sugar for such a long event, and was bonking going up Dalehead though my muscles were still OK, so that was time thrown away. I also went my own way on Glaramara when I'd have done better to follow the pack I think, and cocked up a little descending to Windy Gap and had to backtrack a bit to avoid a cliff.
And in general I was slow on all the greasy wet rock (I'd have been much quicker in a dry year, but then wouldn't everybody). It was really painstaking on the boulder field (something I enjoy in the dry) where I just didn't want to risk breaking my ankle for the sake of a holiday adventure, and took ages to cross it; my trusty XTalon-212s were no match for that stuff. Is there a footwear solution for the kind of rock that's slippery when wet (metal nibs and studs combined or something)?
And I was hugely grateful to the small boy in the last mile who told me jam sandwiches were waiting at the finish. One of those and a few cups of super-concentrated squash from the friendly drinks guy soon had my blood sugar restored and a huge survivor's grin on my face. And boy did I enjoy the recuperation later :D
Anyone know who was taking pictures on scree run ? Bet they look epic
Had a little giggle at the scene that awaited me at the bottom of the screes....a dozen guys dotted around on rocks with their shoes off! Im sure my giggle was captured by THAT photographer. Sorry guys! Hope the injured fella makes a good recovery. Big thanks to Scoffer, marshals & everyone involved in making the race happen. CharlieW - if it's any consolation, you did my time from last year and I was 16mins down on last years time, mainly due to the underfoot conditions and my Teen with Altitude descent off Dale Head..doh! Well done to Ricky, his feet mustn't touch the ground long enough to slip!:p
Big thanks to the marshals & organisers. A great day out in testing conditions.
Incredibly impressed with David Loan's (Keswick V60) run. As I was limping back to the car, aching & broken, I came upon a relaxed cheerful, already changed David looking like he'd been spectating! 3.52 odd...what a fell-beast!
Hope the injured runner makes a full recovery, that sounds a nasty tumble..hats off to the rescue guys.
"THAT" photographer was the legendary Wharfego! Hats off to Andy, as he was right next to the runner who fell and was the first man on the scene, and stayed with him till the mountain rescue arrived.
What a fantastic event Scoffer and all his helpers put on! From the organisation to the prize giving to the jam and cheese sandwiches! Top job by all involved!
Presume this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-28629541
refers to the incident. Sounds serious from the press write up but they do like to exaggerate. Hope all goes well for him.
Congratulations to Ricky and Judith on their wins. Special mention to Andy Holden for looking after the injured runner, hope the guy makes a speedy recovery. The marshals/mountain rescue lads and lasses were amazing as always, I wanted to give each and everyone of them a big hug, it really wouldn't of effected my time with the amount of times I went wandering. On the 4th time of passing Gavin Bland we just looked at each other and started laughing, top man.
Thanks to Scoffer and his helpers, Borrowdale really is an absolute lakeland classic.
