3rd race on the road back to fitness.
21st out of 122 runners?
Best result yet.
Now all i have to do is get a friendly moderator to delete previous posts on the thread and then everyone will accept the fact that i am in fact a speed demon....
I prefer to call it the scenic route. About 3/4 of a mile in the wrong direction up a hill.:o
This years races are not quite going to plan. First one I forget my fell shoes, second one I end up following the flags the wrong way? Dread to think what next?
Cheers to the organiser and marshalls. These things cannot be helped, still brilliant organisation.
Just to put things into some kind of perspective...
I try to run this race with the minimum of fuss and minimum of man-power (ie marshals etc) It has worked just fine since 2001.
Yes an arrow was broken and replanted the wrong way round where the bridleway (Sawood Lane) meets Cold Edge Road at a T junction, and THREE flags were moved (not 20), and placed over the next 5 yards only.
I hope whoever did that had a right good laugh - 2 hrs flagging up the spout.
[[ I would appreciate a volunteer to marshal there next year please ?? ]]
I cannot begin to tell you how sickened I felt when I heard that people had gone wrong. And a bit annoyed and very embarrassed.
However, see posts 7 and 18 on here, and I seem to remember there being a link to the map on my website. In addition to these posts, there were clear course maps on display at registration and I DID say LEFT more than once at the start, and EVERYONE heard me!
I believe I had done all I could to avoid this catastrophe short of having someone walk out onto the moor to steward the route.
The great thing about the event for me was the way every single runner appeared to take it all in good part and seemed to have a laugh about it. The banter at the prizegiving was excellent. Thankyou all.
Sorry for the slight delay in giving out the prizes as we had a runner unaccounted for. All ended well when this person turned up having retraced the flags to the start.

Hi all
New to this site and to fell running. I have been road running for many years but thought i would give the windmills a go as nothing else on in the area i live,(DONCASTER) I run for askern drc.
As my first fell race i have to say what a great event, even after being in about 12th place and following other people for about a mile and ending up at the back of the race on our return to the correct route.
Many thanks to all the people who gave me advice on the day as to clothing to wear and the pace to go etc, i will be back next year now i know the course.
Many thanks pete.
Ok I think my memory may have added a few (17!) extra flags to try and justify the mistake I made in turning right. I had every reason not to turn right, having done it before, having heard the instructions (and nothing about a route change) and having checked the map at the start. Basically Im a lemming and when in doubt follow the crowd. Therefore the winner, in being the first person to choose the correct route fully deserves the prize.
Allan you did everything you could bar exctrating our human instinct to behave like sheep. I hope the fact that I and all others I spoke to still enjoyed the race, (in particualar hunting down slower friends), in someway makes up for your frustration.
Everybody took the unofficial change of route in good spirits. I turned right , knowing it was left , for about thirty seconds, then thought "sheep" and turned round as a result I managed second place. It will never happen again but I'm still pleased.:) I am just waiting for the results to be posted on-line so I can prove it to my friends:D
Many thanks to Alan an the team. My first time running this race. Really enjoyed it and for once was fortunate enough to be way back and took the right turn!
Well done to Dave Collins!
Does anyone know where the results can be found?
Thanks for those very heartening comments folks.
The results boards are here in the living room looking at me. As soon as I have typed them up, they will be on the results secton of the FRA WEBSITE.
Thanks again,
