His heart is beating fast.
It could be anxiety - or pride,
As he's wearing his best club vest.
Some runners show sensitivity
and some are macho men.
Today is Danbert going to prove
the sword is mightier than the pen.
There are runners to the right of him
And runners to the left.
Will these men be able to tell
he has a great hole in his vest?
The 5 minute gun has gone
and runners form in ranks,
Danbert is in amongst them.
Has he time to hide his hankie in his pants?
The murmer slowly ceases...
The field edges to the line,
Danbert breathes deeply
And the moment is held in time.
He thinks of runners gone before him
And of those still yet to come,
And as the canon fires hears
"Strength and Honour my Son".
Danbert charges down the hill
to the plateau and monument.
He sees where he stood in '82,
when another John spoke to a larger mulitude.
Up hill, down dale and through the stream
Danbert storms his way around.
In this field of 400 runners
Where ever will Danbert be found?
Is there going to be a happy ending to this saga?
