Thanks for that. I'll make my mind up in the morning as to whether I want to travel up there. Been on nights all week so I'll probably fall asleep half way round!
At least next Saturday I only have to walk out of my back gate for the Belmont Winter Hill race!
Many thanks to all for this race with out you putting the effort in none of this would happen so thanks again.
It was worth the drive weather was grand, hills were open, and mudlugger saw me wet myself!!:D
Great day today at Coniston, weather fantastic as usual!
Big thankyou to the organisers, marshals and helpers.
Here are some photos taken by Mrs T:

Ha Ha, well done Amex, you cracked a tough a race there mate, weather was perfect and the distance suits me more than those longuns.
Was good to see you still pushing hard at the end... maybe too hard eh.
Hopefully this link will go to the picture I took of you just after you relaxed, a little too much. Well done again!!
Tried to embed imgage but failed, here is a link to it.

Enjoy.
Thank you mrs T for the photos theres 2 good ones of me :) and thanks to Sam and team for running a great event
hardest man there yesterday was definetely Keiran, who looked like the Terry Butcher (ask a footie fan) of fell running. Coming over the line with blood streaming from a gash in the back of his skull only to collapse once he knew he'd completed the task in hand... what a hero. Well done Keiran and I hope it wasnt as bad as it looked (people were almost fainting at the sight of so much blood).
Thoroughly enjoyed the race - well worth coming up from Wales for. Should have read the map a bit more closely as I was expecting another climb towards the end but the downhill was great fun!!:)
Pics show Simon Bailey first towards the finish but I notice Ian Holmes is missing.......was he already past for the win? He seems to have the ability to skin everyone for close on a minute on the descent to the finish off the Old man...fair dues
I reckon it's around GR293981. Just by the last small gate before the miners bridge there is a stile to the left. The river is about 2m wide and I think it was passable on Saturday. I don't think it's any quicker though, but it does miss out those final nasty tree roots (and Mrs T, the photographer:))

Mr Bailey really hasn't found his form since taking last year off.....when was the last time (not including the recent half tour of pendle) that Ian Holmes hammered him by nearly 2 minutes?
This must rank as one of the fastest descents from top to bottom of a big hill. Took me 16.29, coming down the left hand zig zag path route through the quarries, cutting off as many corners as possible. The group I was with at the summit all went down to the right on the steep grass, and were all 2 minutes behind me. Did anyone else time the descent? How does it compare with something like Scafell or Skiddaw. Anyone care to work out minutes per mile or other useless but quiet interesting stats?
I reckon it's the best descent in English fellrunning and there is only one really good line to take (do the Coniston Water Festival race and watch the way the leaders go up and down to see where it goes).
As for descent times - in 1991 or 1992 I was at the top in 1:14 and the finish in 1:28 (not timed to the second I'm afraid) so a 14 minute descent. In 1995 I was at the top in 1:04 but then had a mishap near Miner's Bridge and only did 1:21.19 instead of the 1:18 I should have been on for!
I reckon someone like Ian Holmes must only take about 10 or 11 minutes
last year i was new to this whole malarky and was lucky enough to follow some people down some grass
this year set off all blase in same direction - with not a soul in sight, so improved was my running ability that i ran way past my intended left turn before i realized - on inspection correcting looked like a massive climb back up, a big quarry preventing a cut across at this point. oh well - run down to the wrong path and consider cutting across from there - but looks like walls might be involved - so acknowledging i'd blown it though i might as well have that wee i've been needing for ages - then ran down from walna scar parking into coniston - past the full beergardens to many cheers (me looking like i'm in a race all on my own) and in to the finish 4minutes slower than last year (reckon i lost about 10minutes) - i was at the top at 1:30ish - so it took me more'n half an hour, though this involved some deliberation/laughing at self time.
Going to have a tinkle round this on saturday.
Whats the best line off the Old Man please?
