Marmite Cereal Bars ;):D;)

They were giving away Mars Bars at the Youth Hostel halfway round the Peris Horseshoe when I did it a few years ago - I scoffed a pile of them - big mistake as it got me going up Snowdon but I totally bonked at that point - something to do with a blood sugar rebound effect. I think a ham sandwich might have been a better idea.
Performance enhancing drug of choice with the Bowland Vets team are boiled fresh baby salad potatoes - plenty of slow release starches without the diabetes inducing sugar spikes that disappear as quickly as they appear. And not too heavy to carry!
Well this post has been sitting for a few days - saw some big boxes of Jelly Babies on offer today for half price - I should have made a shrewd investment!
I've been considering spuds, mashed if I could think of a handy way of eating them, but before I go and make myself ill by a surfeit of spuds (a la Eddie Izzard!), I wouldn't mind the benefit of your experience in judging how many to eat per hour, and whether you take just spuds or also have other courses ?:)
Counter-intuitively, plain boiled white potatoes are very high on the glycaemic index, and so more likely to induce energy spikes than eg apples! (Cooking potatoes in fat lowers their GI. Mashing raises it.) I haven't tried this, but how about sweet potatoes, which are lower GI and more nutritious, as well as tastier in my opinion? I cut them into convenient slices and microwave.
I've used new pots boiled with mint then given a good coating of salt and butter. scrummy
also Coop have squirms ar half price at the moment
Martin, being a "plodder" (rather than a racer) I go out on AL championship races to support our vets team. I usually take a couple of dozen new potatoes with me ( none much bigger than a golf ball ) and the lads will take 2 or 3 each. Maybe the following anecdote will be helpful;
At Wasdale 2005 ( exceptionally hot, very high rate of attrition ) one of our regular "Lakeland Classics" contenders went through Beck Head looking quite weary, he took water but refused the potatoes. About 10 minutes later one of our mid-pack brigade struggled up to Beck Head, his movement was barely discernable. He ate a potatoe, took 2 "for later" and drank a good slug of water. He overtook the regular "LC" contender in Calf Cove, shouting "Ian's drugs have just kicked in", to many stares of bewilderment, and continued to have a stormer to the finish.
Anyone who is prepared to eat his main course, is offered one of nature's energy bars for pudding - a banana
Ian.
P.S. I can't claim the boiled potato idea to be my own; Mo Laney used it to good effect when at the peak of her marathon career.
PPS. Attempting to eat 'mash' in a race will be messy - or 'heavy' if you are thinking of tupperware and spoon. A thin plastic bag is ample for boiled pots.
Thanks, WD, useful information. The comment about potatoes being high GI sent me scurrying to the internet, where I discovered far too much information. I will be trying the potatoes out soon, and maybe take IDP's idea of adding butter/oil. I can't take the sweetness of gels, and I find potatoes to be a good pre-race meal (better that pasta for me), hence the interest.
Since this thread is actually about Jelly Babies, I should mention them as well. There, done it.
This thread has had me in stitches lol & as mother to 6, I now know where all the baby food had gone:p
6! How on earth do you have the energy to run?
Oh, I see - you're bionic . . .
You can't beat spuds for energy. Plus, with a little herbs and salt, they're pretty tasty too.
Which Colour?

Nice one Wharfee ~ I think I chose the black one
P.S. I've voted for the 'stoat'. Hope you win.
Preciousss jelly babiessss
I really love Jelly Babies, but am I the only one who now and again has a nibble of a jaffa cake on a run? probably not sensible but they seem to do the trick for me!!
Probably been asked before but I am too lazy to search.
I was told that chocolate is not that good on a run as it would be too slow to release the energy. Is there any truth to this?
Salted peanuts I've heard are great. Bit of good fat, bit of salt, taste great !
I've used dark chocolate before and found it okay. I make a "trail mix" of dark choc, almonds, walnuts, raisins and peanuts and this seems good, but choc on its own has worked fine. These days I'm trying to go longer without food and I'm up to about 3 hours of comfortable running, although I do bring emergency food with me.
did high peak 40 powered by mostly jaffa cakes and orange squash and it seemed ok, they're a bit dry without liquid though
Don't think it matters too much; as long as you get a sensible mix of sugars and starch then a small proportion of fat will be no problem. Fat and protein are slower to metabolise; in short races they don't really give you much calories but if they make the food more palatable then that's fine as long as the proportion is small. In longer stuff then they can be more useful, especially small quantities of protein.
I did the Fellsman powered by custard creams and bourbon biscuits (with the occasional hot dog and a cheese buttie!) just because that's what the tents had; seemed to do the job fine
It's all about Bounce bars for me now ! Taste fantastic with no "nasties" inside !
I once had a mini Mars Bar during the 3 Peaks. Put it in at the top of Ingleborough & had to spit it out a mile later ! Couldn't get it down.
I've tried everything and nothing bought compares with things you can make yourself. My current favorite is American style pancakes, loads of butter and syrup in the mix plus an extra pinch of salt. 2 eggs will make 10 pancakes! nutella is good as are potatoes (new with skin left on). I will always grab jelly babies if they are available at checkpoints though. I once had some weird homemade salty flapjack balls, sweet and salty goodness. They even had caffeine in them! I haven't a clue how to make them or even where you would buy caffeine but they did the trick. I'm off to Google salty flapjack balls, I may get fired.
