Yeah, felt I a good one, 5 mins quicker than last year. Topman was with me at the trig, so I gained the gap on the descent. Hameldon is proving to be a good training ground for these shorter races.

Next Saturday, 4th June. Similar descent to 3 Peaks but don't forgot to turn off the Pennine Way before you get into Ribblehead otherwise you'll miss out a few checkpoints! I'd personally say the more northerly "Alternative Route" is the quicker option, from what I remember it's nice and grassy and not the rocky break-your-ankle stuff on the Pennine Way.

May well do it myself, do you know if there'll be someone to ditch my gear during the race as I'll have to catch the train up? (I hate not having a car!)

There's usually a tent where you register, should be no problem leaving your gear with them.

Hmm, apparently there isn't a train back to Lancaster after the race finishes, and the last one from Long Preston is 17:43. Would anyone be able to give me a lift back to Long Preston?

well did pen y ghent for 1st time legs had no strength in em from blencathra wed nite, good race thow apart from the first road section to much tarmac for me o
and the marshall that sent me down pennine way at finger post when i wanted to take the right hand path down to hull pot lost may be 6-7 places but managed to get most of em back by the finish.

Woodzy was it you I ran behind into the wind and at the side of heading into the climb? We towed each other and then you shout encouragement as you breezed passed on the descent?

Pictures are definitely up though - here's me, my eldest daughter (who was obviously not trying hard enough smiling like that) and her boyfriend (who ran a blinder, finishing 20th). I think I came 44th with a time of 1:03:31 hours. Absolutely brilliant race :)

Brilliant race. I thoroughly enjoyed it (as the photo of me shows) and it was a relief not to have Whernside and Ingleborough to do as well. I really enjoyed the show too especially the bagpipers doing status quo, the alpacas, the ferret racing and the worm charming! oh and not to forget the fab cake! :thumbup:

Hmmm. I'm not in the forum champs, but will be in attendance for the U20 Champs. It would be a crime not to run.. (What about Yetholm did someone say?). :p

Any race which isn't a road race counts (almost), you just compare your time and the winners to get your points score.

See the separate thread for more details, dont think your too late to join and only 6 months count.

Wouldn't like to comment on the times but the distance is incorrect. Its 6.6 mile on both occasions I have done it, that make it an AM cat not the AS its advertised as.

Mark Roberts (course record holder) won the English and British counter on this course 10 years ago, beating the in-form John Brown. He ran 44.30 on a very hot day, so 42.54 was possible for him in perfect conditions.

The record was set in 1997 when the race was an English and British Championship counter so there was a high quality field. If I recall correctly, it was also the first year in which the route ran all the way through the village to the church and then left onto the road to Brackenbottom. Prior to that, the route was left onto the Pennine Way after the cafe (same as the Three Peaks) then right into another lane to a narrow footbridge over the stream to join the Brackenbottom road near the school. This earlier route is slightly shorter which presumably accounts for the faster time from 1989 not counting as the current record.

I also think, although I stand to be corrected, that at one time the route used to skirt round Whitber Hill rather than going over the top.

For many of us who were there, the 1997 race is probably most memorable for the hailstorm that hit us on the descent although the faster runners at the front probably won't remember as they were safely back in Horton by then.
