Thanks Old Un. We really did have perfect conditions. Good luck in your next attempt...hope the weather's as good for you.
Great stuff Steve. Sounds and looks like a fantastic day out.
I'm planning an August attempt. If anyone fancies it please let me know. Otherwise it'll be a solo effort.
Thanks for that, Steve, I enjoyed your write-up.
You get so few reports and photos from runs, I guess it's just the nature of the beast.
I feel quite inspired by it, as I mentioned, I'm having a bash at running this in 8 days time, now. This is like the culmination of where I've been trying to work towards since I started running 'properly' about 18 months ago. So it's significant to see people who've gone out and enjoyed it with a fairly non-serious attitude. I just hope I can get around, I imagine I will feel rather uncomfortable by Foel Fras.
Nice to see the use of poles for the uphill bits, that is what I plan to do.
Cheers!
I may well be up for that when in august you looking at doing it and what sort of time ? Won't be
Able to reply while next week though I'm away at mo
that suits me ive got a long one end july so mid/end august would work for me too, wot sort of time you looking at im no speed merchant im afraid ok on the hills. il pencil it in and let me know your plans when you make em and we can sort something out im looking forward to another go at now ive got an idea of the route
Am just looking at getting round it, not looking to break any records thats for sure.
Route wise I've done the Glyder section a few times. Not done the section from Ogwen onwards but might be doing a walking recce late July.
Mid / late August is a definite for me and I'm pretty flexible on dates. Maybe sort a date out in 3 or 4 weeks time ?
Anyone else is welcome to join us.
sounds good to me mate im doing wolds way last week in july or first week in august weather dependant so a weeks rest then im good after that. let me know later on as you say
Good luck all!
Yes Joester, the poles were invaluable on this. Definitely worth taking along.
Did this outing last weekend, over 2 days mountain-marathon stylee with a wild camp at the lake above Devil's Kitchen. We started from Pen-y-Pass taking in Crib Goch first and the weather was truly awful until after we got back down to the 'Pass before heading up the interminable slog that it Elidir Fawr. We met the first finishers of the W1000M race on Snowdon in the freezing and wet conditions, wondering how they'd got round so quick - until we found out the race'd been shortened.
The weather cheered up by the time of our midway camp, and we woke up on Sunday morning to a totally different picture to the first day - clear skies, sunshine, flat calm over the waters of the lake reflecting Glyder Fawr... Route-finding that day wasn't a problem ;) We saw the whole of the Carnedds section in good visibility, wondering what'd happened to the torrents that were flowing down every hillside the day before - washing away whole villages & towns further down the valleys by the sounds of it :w00t:
As I wasn't with runners, we took 34 hours car-to-car including 13 hours at camp. It gave me new respect for the route and will serve as a perfect recce for next year when I attempt it as a run in one go.
Awesome route !!

Had a pop at this last Saturday with Felix of this forum. Steady day out, excellent route and the Carneddeau to ourselves  Got the train up Snowdon (how much:w00t:) to start at 9.55. Finished 9hrs 31 later. With support from Pete F and Jan we managed to get to the pub before they stopped serving food. Highlight of the running year so far.
Highlight of the running year getting to the pub on time or the day as a whole?
Sounds like you had a great day out. I am hoping to have a go in late summer with a few of my running pals.
We did this yesterday. Top day out, beautiful weather and fabulous views. Breakfast in Pete's Eats, 9.00am train. Left Snowdon summit just after 10am, finished in 7hrs 45. Chuffed with that being 2hrs faster than the last time in 2003 :-)
I've been reading Ronald Turnbull's book and yesterday a club-mate (K1M) mentioned the Welsh 3000's. Probably a project for next spring now . . . ;)
It's a good day out. We did it a few weeks ago - read all about it here if you like.
Geoff, many thanks (and well done!)
Enjoyed youre write-up Geoff, very inspiring. We had a go at it on 15th September, but just with the lads from work who are'nt runners, we was just walking it but we totally underestimated how tough it was. I'm the only runner amongst our party and didnt fancy tackling the Carnedds section on my tod 'cos everyomne else was bolloxed, so we all jacked it in once down from Tryfan. But I'll be back next year, now I know whats in store, but think I'll leave the lads from work back in Hull. Just need to get a couple of others from our club(East Hull Harriers)to join me, oh and I need to get more training done.
Hi all - me, my brother and a friend are doing the 3000s this Friday (9th) starting at around 5:00am from pen-y-pass (going Crib Goch, CU, Snowdon way). Anyway who is free would be welcome to join!
Just a quick question - I've done Crib Goch before but it was 8 years ago so cant remember much - Is it better to traverse the pinnacles to the South side rather than 'go over' them, and if so is it easy to do that?
Regards
Hi Jimmy, I have done this many times. If you are taking Crib Goch from the Pen Y Pass side then traverse well below the pinnacles on the left side of the ridge, i.e overlooking Llyn Llydaw on the south side of the ridge. If you veer right or North you run a real risk of becoming crag fast....ask me how I know!
The traverse at times runs some 50 metres below the ridge top and there are a couple of steep gullies to traverse but the path is fairly easy to follow. It brings you nicely onto the saddle on the west side of the pinnacles. Good luck!
About half way between CG and the start of the pinnacles you can see the fairly indistinct track running off on your left. At first, its fairly level running along a wide 'ledge' a few feet below the ridge top. Then it gets a bit gnarly as you reach the first of the two gullies. You have to be prepared to drop a fair way but you can pick out the route that others have taken before. The second gully has a fairly steep scramble out to a ledge you can see running around the flank of the rock mass that the pinnacles sit on.
Its hard to describe but pretty obvious when you get there. I've soloed it several times.
I don't think dropping low saves time. probably quicker over the pinnacles. both ways involve scrambling on either airy ridges or up quite long gullies/ rock steps. It depends on what is your thing!
its not about time, its about exposure!
So how did it go Jimmy?? Weather was not very kind was it?
Bit of a mixed day Wheeze...
First thing in the morning it was quite claggy and raining but after that it was glorious!
We went up Crib Goch and it was very wet and windy and my friend felt VERY uneasy so after reaching the summit we just picked a route down off the south side all the way to the grassy bottom and picked up the Miners Track to go back up to the marker stone and get CG then YW. My friend was quite drained after the experience so told me and my brother to crack on and he would meet us with the van at Ogwen.
We took the drop off from Clogwyn down to Nant Peris which was fine. Pretty uneventful from there - great weather. My brother made it to Ogwen and then called it a day, took the van on to Aber. I cracked the last leg and met him at Aber.
long shot due to short notice, :o
but is anybody available TOMORROW (Friday 7th July)
who knows Crib Goch,
who would be willing to chaperone me over it :)
- I'm OK with height/exposure/scrambling, but I've never done it before and don't fancy doing it for the first time on my own.
(weather forecast is clear for middle of day)
LAST CALL!
if nobody has PM'd me their phone no by 10pm (and doesn't mind me ringing that late), I'll have to sack off this idea...
thanks for the reassurance Iain :)
however I've decided to stay a bit closer to home tomorrow
will still be wanting to do Crib Goch at some point on a weekday soon...
Has anyone got a schedule starting at Snowdon fir around 7-8 hours, other than Thomas Firbanks 8:25 from the book? I'm going to bivvy in a couple of weeks and solo it.
Hi, I did it in 11 hours but started at Nantgwnant (Same as V3k start) and took 90 minutes to get to the top of Snowdon and longer descent to the finish at Abergwngregyn.
Here's a link to my strava.
So this would be a roughly 8-9 hours and if you look at the laps times, you will find the times from one top to another.
That’s great - looks like the sort of pace I’ll be on-hopefully! I’ll let you know how I get on a week Tuesday z
