As I understand it Garmins definitely tend to over read ascent and I've even heard an estimate of three times as much as it is in reality. Usually fine for distance though.

I think the organiser measured it on memory map last year, so he was quite confident about the distance/ascent, he would probably happily provide the data again.
Juicer's garmin measured 21.91 miles and 3,914 of ascent. I can believe both of those. Certainly wasn't over 5,000ft of ascent....or at least if it was, my training's going better than I thought:D
Smashing day out, fantastic event, thanks to all the marshalls and thanks for all the marvellous food at the CPs and at the end.
Those dripping sandwiches are going to be on my BG menu:D
Well done to Juicer for knocking over 45 mins off last year's time. But I claim the award for "most improved" I reckon....over 2 hours up on last year ;)
This is an event to treasure and nurture!
It epitomises the whole ethos of the LDWA and their ilk. No profit motive. No sponsors. No b...sh*t man, just a superb event. Well done to all those involved in the organisation.
Really enjoyed this yesterday, took me to parts of the upper Calder Valley that I had no idea existed. Thanks to all involved.
Couldn't face dripping sandwiches I'm afraid, but the cake was fab, as was the banter and the (at times) collective route finding, and indeed, route losing.
Managed to shuffle around in 4:17.
This morning my feet feel like someone's been hitting them with blunt instruments. Don't remember his happpening, so I'm blaming the uneven and frozen ground.
Results are now displayed at www.alangreenwood.biz/index.html and on the Ldwa website under Calderdale Group. Glad you all enjoyed it so did we.
What a gradely day out.....couldn't fault the food, organisation or route just wish there had been more mud :) You just can't please some people...
FYI : my garmin came in at 21.62 miles which is spot on I'd say...although the7794 ft ascent and similar descent is way out....think I need to RTFM and work out whats wrong !?!...
I would also like to echo the comments of the people on this post and thank the organisers for their efforts which helps to make this event so enjoyable.
And thank you Fidaleo for waiting for me every now and again. We were 40 minutes quicker than last year but looking at the results it seems many people were also quicker. I'm sure the lack of mud helped in that regards. Plus in our case not getting lost in the last four miles.
Re the elevations, I had plotted the course on Friday on "Running Ahead" which came up with 6824 ft of ascent which I thought was a bit unlikely. It's quite remarkable that there is so much difference in these measurements and I'd love to know which is nearest to the true figure.
The mileage is about right at 21.5 miles but we generally come out with about 4400ft of climbing at walking pace. Can only think that the massive amount of ascent some of you get is due to the height you bounce when running??? or falling down and getting up??? or going up every hill you can find??? or having a duff GPS???
I think you've covered the most of the possible reasons there, Alan, apart from those you are too polite to mention.
Thanks again, and my apologies for giving your name an extra 'L' yesterday.
Well done with your run, Chris. 27 minutes quicker than last year!
Sorry I didn't get chance to talk to you - when we met I was dashing in to register, and I couldn't find you afterwards. Happy New Year!
Perhaps Juicer took a "shortcut" to make it up to 21.91 miles?:D
As for the ascent, if folks are using Garmins and Sporttracks(sp?), we had to get some "elevation smoothing" plug-in to get it to work properly, otherwise ascents were coming out at ridiculous figures.
And thanks again Alan for organising such a great event. Last year was the first time I'd ever been out on the Calderdale fells....and now, we're tucked up on a boat at Hebden Bridge and very soon to be buying a house nearby. Can't wait to explore moor ;) of the area.
Here, here!
Thanks to you and your team Alan, fabulous event.
Well done Chris with your time. My 4:07 was 25 mins faster than last year but still not up to your standard. I'm expecting you to beat me hands down at Two Crosses Circuit on Sunday!
Hi Tussockface,
Sorry I missed you. I don't recall seeing you after the finish. It's probably because I was volunteering afterwards at check-in, so I wasn't able to mingle.
Many thanks to Alan, Carole and crew for a most excellent event. I heard nothing but well-deserved praise from the returnees.
For interest's sake, I've just checked the exact route on Tracklogs. It makes it 21.7 miles with 4,690 feet of ascent.
Nick.
A belated thank you to Alan and his team, great event, great value for money, really enjoyed it:)
As I'm fit at the moment, I've decided to do this one in 2010.
My second event in 3 years !
I've entered it, but it ain't on the 3rd Jan next year - on the 23rd. Jolly hard with all the climb - you need to take it very steady
I'll be there. Brilliant event and top scran ;)
Yuk to the dripping sarnies :p...but yum to the stollen! :)
Just looked at previous results and noticed that some people walk the route....so this could be a good one for me to start off with. ;)
Very pleased to read interest is building for next years Hebden. We have changed the date to Saturday 23rd January to avoid a clash with The Tandem on the 9th. As usual details can be found at www.alangreenwood.biz/index.html The route is just about the same as the last one except for the inclusion of a small short cut on the first section and a diversion near the end which by-passes the nasty little steps. We shall waymark Whams Wood again but that will be all. Same people as before. Apple crumble and custard again along with the other usual grub. A welcome to all you runners old and new.
Thanks to Merrylegs for introducing me to 'beer beer beer' cannot get the b----y tune out of my head now. It should have a health warning!
Alan G
Any chance of including large short cuts on the rest of the sections? :D
I've not signed up yet as I'm checking to see when the White Holme Circular is on. How do you choose between an Alan Greenwood event and an Allan Greenwood event? As Swoop might say, it's one L of a decision.
I'm in :)
can't see the total distance / climb for this one - anyone?
im entering the 14.5 mile version. summat to train for over the winter
I'm in.
