Just got a nice short cut agreed with a landowner - cuts out drive and narrow gate to Peckett Well Mill and means we can now cut corners and run straight off Keighley and into field via a large gate (and same on return)
Think we need to stress the need for safe running at road crossing at the 2 tricky points (ie Heptonstall Draper Corner/ Lee Road and Peckett Well / Keighley Road) the marshals will not stop traffic
Any thoughts on safe race road crossings????

Excitement is building in Heptonstall as the village prepares to stage its second major fell running event of 2011 this Saturday 9th July. Following the success of the epic 15 mile Heptonstall Fell Race in March Heptonstall Hurriers were asked to organise a new short, fun, fell race for Heptonstall Festival.
The Hurriers rose to the challenge, working with land owners, Calder Valley Fell Runners, Todmorden Harriers, plus a host of friends and neighbours to make the new race a reality. Heptonstall Festival Fell Race will kick off a day of family fun including live music, folk dancing, local food, and children’s entertainment.
The 6 mile course should be an instant hit with fell runners, featuring some of the best scenery in the area on little known paths and rights of way; The unusual double-descent format starts at the White Lion Pub with a quick run up the cobbles, followed by a 500 ft descent to the Blue Pig. After the 1000 ft ascent to High Brown Knoll runners turn tail and head back to the Heptonstall the way they came.
Set against the iconic backdrop of Hardcastle Craggs, Heptonstall, and Stoodley Pike, Peckett Well War Memorial is a real highlight. As the race progresses from Peckett Well to the summit of High Brown Knoll runners will be clearly visible from Heptonstall. Standing at 1453 feet, and 120 feet higher than Stoodley Pike, High Brown Knoll and its moorland flanks provide classic fell running, whilst offering festival-goers with binoculars the unique opportunity to monitor the race from the comfort of the finishing field in Town Field Lane. (weather permitting!). The return ascent to Heptonstall should be a real test of runner’s endurance on the final, and steepest climb from Midgehole to Lee Bank.
The race will swell the crowds at the Heptonstall Village Festival, as runners from across the region are expected to join locals on the start line. Race Organisers hope the race will become an annual community event, inspiring local runners, new to fell running, to experience the exhilaration of racing over hills. Beginners will find the route easy to follow, fully flagged, and well marshalled, whilst seasoned fell runners will enjoy the 1500 feet of climbs and descents over wide variety of terrain.

The top of the finish field gives a panoramic view onto the entire middle 3-4 miles of the race - from Pecket Well War memorial to High Brown Knoll and back.
I'll be clearly identifiable by my bright blue Hurriers vest... actually, there might be a few other Hurriers' vests in evidence too. I'll have to think of another way for the Daniels' cheering squad to identify me :thumbup:.
The grandstand view might be a bit like row Z at Old Trafford - but depending on number of spectators there might be a demand for perimeter adds in 2012Quote:

:D Thanks to everybody who made the race today such a good one; especially Trig for co-ordinating the massive team of marshalls, flaggers, time-keepers, clowns, post race refreshers. It was a pretty tough race - the mud and water making it even more of a test I'd say. Good fun all round though. Same place this time next year everyone? :D
Phew what a day! Only just got back to the house after the music fest - will do my best get some results on web tomorrow (our webmiester is on his way back from Wasdale) Really enjoyed the whole experience - seeing 93 runners on the start line made it all worth while. Think my race time may have been effected by the heavy burden of responsibilty (thats my excuse anyway!) or more likely still being in the pub at 1am on Friday.Quote:

Good turn out from Baku hash house harriers! Did nt get many other teams from Azerbaijaan this year -maybe they can put Heptonstall in their club champs next year.

Same here Andy! I think young legs are better suited to short blasts (I prefer epic 10-20 milers). That said its all about preparation - more hill reps and warming up (oh...and not staying out til 1am the night before).That last climb was much muddier than normal (so much rain!) was a bit worried someone might take a fall on the way down - hopefully next year it will be a bit firmer.Quote:

Heard a few well known Calder Valley stars completely missed the (well flagged) right hand turn on the last ascent from Blue Pig/ They ended up wading through nettles and clmbing over walls to get to Lee Road - I will protect their identity for now as believe there may be some super injunction in place - look out on twitter or evidence of multiple stings and abraison to lower leg.....
