I'll look out for you Nick! I'll be in Dark Peak rather than Matlock colours this wkd. Dissapointed you're not doing LS though- need to 'nobble' you back from FRA's

Well they are off!! All those teams swarming over the Howgills on a chilly morning. I'm waiting till they have one in Hawaii then I'm in ;-) good luck all, see you at the finish.
any mid way stats or standings anywhere?
thanks Guy
Great event. Fellow Eryri runner, Sam Smith and I ran the elite, a late decision on both our parts. Yesterday was cold, strong wind, but clear and crisp, but warm enough for bogs to be unfrozen.. plenty of tussocky running and 1 long leg between checkpoints. We made 1 stupid error which cost us time. Day 2 was just horrible.. strong winds, driving rain and what felt cold temps.. Had a much stronger day 2, maybe because our nav had to be spot on so we were more competitive. One leg today was 2 hrs long, with some very different route choices on offer, we direct lined it pretty much (which I think most did).
Hardly ran in the fells all year so was surprised to feel at my best on both days after a good 4 hrs.. felt fine at the end too, but on finishing my knees and feet are sore.. cold helped..
Finished just off top 10, Zlod got that, never saw him all weekend though.. in fact we saw very few so maybe we had strange route choices...
TBH we were lucky with the weather with cold crisp, then horrible wet.. certainly preferable.
Not a day for the marshalls..
Overall, great area for it, loads of horrible terrain/trods to link up, short sharp hills, made the route choices quite varied..
Hmm, my first proper go at an MM! IainR I think me and my team buddy nipped in front of you and Sam after we missed our start on day 1 by 10 min...day 2 wasn't much better, we missed that by 20 min! I'll have to buy a watch! Day 1 OK conditions, if cold, apart from everyone wandering around the moor below Wild bore fell.....a little bit more time than expected spent there :o Day two was harsh, very wet, very, very cold, suffered alot, but very pleased to have finished. The cold bogs, puddles, stream certainly helped with my sore feet from the endless contouring...someone asked me if I had blisters...no, it was beyond that point. I did enjoy it in a sick and twisted kind of way, so will be back for more..and perhaps get out of my pit a bit quicker!
IainR: Thought it was! :) Yes, I have some whacking great ones too. I have decided, I really hate contouring, tussocks and bog...rules out most of my training ground on the mynd! Well done you and Sam, looks like you had a great run...this year was a practice for us?!
Glad you enjoyed it (sort of) Helen. looked for you but never met up. When we got to camp it was chilly so we stuck in the tent until about 8.30 when it started to cloud over and get milder. Pleased with our result on B. Day 1 no major nav errors and just a couple of dubious route choices and then day 2 just one bad control near start in mist and then a pretty good day. Was very wet and cold by finish tho- even the guy doing kit check on us relented and let us go for soup and bus. Glad we were in chasing start and did not have to stick to our 9.17 start on day 2. an't believe how fine my legs feel today- off climbing now (indoors). Marshalls sat out on hill without a tent on day 2 were true heros!
Tried to keep an eye for you Karen too! Day 2 was sooo cold! Just glad to finish. The marshalls/organisation was excellent :)
MrRTS & team mate had a mare on day one as they overshot CP2 by quite some way. Got to CP6 and decided to head for camp as team mate done in so sadly an incomplete day. Camp he said was bloody freezing. Day 2 was cold, wet very windy but they hit every CP to cross the finish line with a smile and a massive hug for me. He looked like he could go again. Conversation in the car on way home. "I was freezing babe it was bloody horrible. We will have to get you some of the lightweight gear and we will do one together next year". Ermm, what was at the beginning of that statement lol.
Well done to all the marshals and helpers at the finish line. To the Elite runner that stripped off completely in the kit check tent I don't think they need to check your kit that thoroughly lol. Not that the kit check lady was complaining. The Kit check people were really lovely.
Also, well done to me for standing in poring rain, freezing and traumatised by the state of some of the finishing competitors for 4 hrs :-/.
AND WE DO THIS FOR FUN!!!
We had a decent run, we messed up CP9 on day .. stupid but just weren't concentrating but then a decent run from then. Yesterday we were much more switched on due to the cloud and nailed almost every CP and route choice I think.. day 1 we did a huge swing to the north on one of the long legs which I'm not sure everyone did..
The big one yesterday 5>6 we swung over 2 500m cols and then another traverse and climb before a final descent, steep climb descent, pretty much straight lined it. We did consider running all the way along the ridges.
Didn't really see anyone at the Campsite but we were in bad soon after 7 I reckon, cold night.
I finished feeling good, but hammered now. Glad to get the car out of the field.. that was a mess. I saw comments about litter on the OMM forum, TBH I don't think I saw anything all weekend.. I had one wrapper blow away 2 times before I finally got it stashed, but don't think I saw one gel sachet all weekend.. and I thought the skip was handy.
My first proper go too.
I must be sick and twisted beyond medical help because I absolutely loved it, though I wasn't ambitious enough to throw myself at the Elite course - chapeau.
Possibly the best couple of days I've had in the mountains for quite some time. It was a perfect combination of beautiful clear Saturday, clouding over to make the camping a bearable temperature followed by a claggy, wet and windy Sunday - a nice test of mountain-craft and fortitude with the prospect of a nice cup of soup and bus-ride to sausage butty at the end.
It was great to have to go to places you wouldn't normally visit via routes you'd normally by-pass. I've always wanted to traverse under the crags next to Cautley Spout and I really enjoyed that.
Walking up to the start we chatted to two ladies from Essex. It was their first MM too, and they were agog at our "wilderness." They are probably unaware of the existence of this forum, but I hope they had a great time too.
I'd be dead interested in seeing the Elite Course for future reference. If somebody could upload the map or some details I would be really grateful.
Good weekend. We found the medium score challenging in terms of route choice... really good planning with no immediately apparent best option. In hindsight pretty sure we could've scored better with a better choice of route, but I guess most teams feel that way! Testing conditions on day two. We spent most of the day in the south east section of the map around Baugh Fell and it was pretty grim going in all the bogs and marshes. Managed a cramp-inducing thigh-deep dip at one point. All worth it for the pasty and beans at the end though.
Look here -
http://www.omm.routegadget.co.uk/
After selecting Day1 Elite/A.B.D page then select Elite on choose Class/Course box
If you want to see routes then click on a team with an asterisk by their name (you can choose several at the same time)
then click 'view routes' and their routes will be displayed on the map together with the split times at top right.
If you want to see them racing in comparative time then click 'view animation' and to the right a 'Start' box will appear
before you click it make sure you've dragged the map around so you are viewing the start - then press 'start' and off they go!
Epocian -
That's brilliant.
Looks like a very useful facility.
If I ever get the java thingy to work...
How do you save without box coming up? I've used routegadget before but I've forgotten something simple I think.
Epocian,
I got routegadget to work on my works computer. That's fantastic. The wonders or technology!
Thanks for the link.
I meant save your route in routegadget.
Interesting route choices in the elite on day 1 and 3 for the two long legs, some went north to the out of bounds some direct lined it. lots of retirements.. is that normal?
I think so. I guess it's one of a) the course is much harder than expected, day 1 turns out be a right killer and the prospect of doing it all over again isn't exactly tempting, or b) strong runners who fancy themselves to be in the mix lose lots of time either through a big error or struggling physically and rather than slog round to finish the event they jack it in.
We retired on day 2 of the LAMM Elite this year after an epic on day one and realising part way through day two we couldn't make it back in time for my partner's train home (i.e. I couldn't drag my arse round quick enough). We'll be back next year though!
suspect that our one/ the real one is the toughest!
Go to top right and tick the 'draw your route' box - then choose your course and select your name.
Start to draw your route, making sure to go into the exact middle of the circle (it will shoot out a blue line to the next control - if it doesn't, you haven't got to the middle and you won't be able to save it) continue round the course until you've gone reached the finish then click 'Save your route' - It should confirm it's saved.
If at any point you realise you've made a slight error with your drawing click the blue 'Undo' button at the top
Well, I enjoyed my weekend
We managed 190 points on day1 with 5mins to spare, 135 on day 2 with 25 seconds to spare (Medium Score), bringing us in 90th overall of 205 starting teams in our class, which makes us 'top half of the field'
Very pleased for a first MM.
Usual recriminations of poor route choice in retrospect, esp on day 2(bloody re-entrants! lost one, and only found another after 30mins!)
We kept saying on day1 - 'savour this, it won't be like this tomorrow' ... and it wasn't. Hard slog by the end
Worst bit was probably the M6 southbound on the way home though!
:o Lawriej - wot are you like?!

That was good going i reckon...we got 180 on day1 with 20 mmins in hand but nothing to go for having chickened on the big hills and crossed the road early ( but we did get all on the west side. second day we over egged it on that horrible Baugh Fell ( if you spit out the name sounds what i thought of it) a looong way back from the road crossing saw us very late and due to penalties only ended up with 90 or so points....bah humbug.
Still one team day one collected the classic nil points due to penalties .I bet that hurt.
Also some teams dq'd due to using the track then road parallel to the main road to the finish on day 2 , but looking at the map it seems to be inbounds, certainly outlined as such, but there was a statement on the map saying road/track OUT of bounds...could be taken to mean the main road of course. NOt clear in my opinion, or at least ambiguous. I know of at least one team got dq'd on that and assume there were more...we played it safe and went around the top of the field boundary but it hurt.
Explains the number of pairs coming up the run in field as we were hammering down though.
Lots of mp's on the elite and a courses but havn't looked to see why yet.
Agree M6 was horrible had to leave it at poplar and use A500 for a bit.
Well the ankle held up with extensive strapping, althoughthe strapping lead to a number of blisters. Neither I nor my partner are top navigatorsIMO. We lost 1:47 on day one by taking a parallel path and finding ourselves inthe wrong valley. We finished day one with 13 minutes to spare with 160 points, neither of us was anywhere near our physical limits mind.
On day two I made a big cock up and somehow thought we hadonly 4 hours to complete medium score, we then made a mistake and ran past onecheck point we were looking for, without that we collected 105 points and crossed the finish linein 3:10 hours we had the honour of being the first team to finish in the mediumscore class, shame we had so little points.
With hind sight we would of both been better doing the Bclass event with less check points it would have played to our strengths, stillonly my second one and I need more experience.
Well done to my ADAC club mate who finished 3rdin the short score class.
Oh the phyiso said no more running until he has seen me on Friday,so I did a little 8 miler tonight with the dogs, well they needed a run so thatdoesn’t count.

I think on day 2 moral would have been pretty low with any nav error and people may have just canned it.
I thought the nav on day 2 on elite was luckily all pretty straightforwards, there were a few on day 1 which I wouldn't have fancied in cloud.. but maybe I was much more switched on, on day 2. The main thing was the route choice options, we had some long legs, mainly 5 > 6. 8>9 looked long but there was one pretty clear option.
i have heard that the people dq'd for using the track to the finish on day 2 and then up field to last control are being reinstated but with time penalties...seems a pragmatic solution.
