Shelf Moor

Please note I am making a change to the start time of the Ladies race.

It will now start 15 minutes later at 11:15.

The reason for this change is to prevent the risk of disrupting the Ladies Race as the leading women come off the Lightside Descent. If we start the race at 11:00 the leading women will be coming off the final descent into a pack of 200 people waiting to start the Mens race. By delaying the start by 15 minutes the Men's Race will have started and the disruption prevented.

I will be posting a few more details later today or tomorrow.

I still don't think Olivia will be able to get back from Slovenia in time!

STL - Presumably the men's registration will stay open until the men's race starts - just in case I don't make it there, or find somewhere to park, by the time that the women's race starts?

The registration will stay open, probably until about 11:50. It is a 10 minute trot to the race start from registration. I will posting some extra details about parking options here later today.

Thanks IDP. :) I'm not counting chickens yet.

I was planning to have a super 4 weeks of training running up to this race, but I missed about 5 days with some virus. No hills :eek: I'll watch out for you on the flat bits then. ;)

A few extra details,

There is a new map on the Glossopdale Harriers web site to help people find us. Directions will be posted from the A57.

Parking:

Please do not park in Hope St outside the hut. The road is narrow and we do not want to upset the locals. Firth Rixon have kindly let us use the car park at the start of Shepley Street, which has space for 40-50 cars. There is also roadside paeking on Shepley Street for about 30 cars. Additional street parking is available on Manor Park road opposite the entrance to the park. Manor Park also has a car park on Corn St(50-60 cars), 10 mins walk to registration. Please car share if possible.

Please do not use the field beyond the start gate to warm up. The landowner has asked us to stay to the official footpath. John4of5 will be at the gate as an enforcer.

Just picked up the main prizes and the guy has done a brilliant job again.

I had a little run across the Shelf Moor section of the course yesterday evening, it is drying out nicely, should make for a fast race tomorrow.

Excellent stuff, After today marshalling at Longshaw i'm itching to get going, Jogged round at the back sweeping with Filthy Rich.

Excellent event. Well done Second to Last and your helpers you did yourselves and the FRA proud.

Many thanks to everyone who turned out today and made it a great event. 3 seconds in the final race isn't a bad way to decide the Championship.

I am just going to have a cup of coffee now and I will try to post a provisional set of results, including FRA categories before long.

When I left the hut, the mountain rescue had reached Barbara and she was being taken off to Hospital with what sounded like a broken wrist. Thanks to Alexis to stopping with her to start with and Des after that. I am sure her progress will be posted here.

Just a couple of housekeeping things, I have a magic mountain jacket and a fleece type top that were left at the finish. Also I have a set of car keys for a fiat that were found on Hope St. If any of that sounds familiar drop me a PM and I will sort something out.

Roll on next year.

Still a great race even if my performance left alot to be desired, Apolagise to Alan for nearly knocking him over:o next time he'll just after run faster....

Julian M GMRT grabbed me as I crossed the line and we headed back up to help out.

Barbara was well looked after with 4 hunky blokes in the clan tent with her, her husband would like to have a word with one of them "Werdna Swilnik" I believe who kept her warm!;) Big thank you there I think. 3 walkers also helped out.

She was carried off by the combined efforts of Glossop and Woodhead MRT. Then taken to Hospital.

I'll post on here when I hear how she is.

What a fantastic finish to the Championship series. Obviously I'm gutted for Lloyd, as he's a really good mate, and he was just ahead of Rob as they came past me on the Lightside descent. Really pleased to see Helen on good form, too (she was also in the lead when she past me - I must be a bad omen).

My photos are up here, but they're not a patch on Fell Donkey's I'm afraid (you should have seen the size of his camera!!)

I hope Barbara's ok - well done to everyone who stopped to help her (especially Alexis who still had a chance of a medal before today's race).

It's an old Nikon d70s with a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens, not the greatest set up but it works ok.

Hopefully the provisional results are attached here. Please can everyone have a look through for any mistakes I have made and send me a message. I will aim to forward the sheets to the FRA on Tues/Weds. For some reason the original pdf wouldn't upload although it is meant to be an allowed attachment. Intstead the two files are in a zip file.

The photos look great, when I get a chance I will upload some of mine together with some taken by Neil Shuttleworth.

My very best wishes go out to Barbara for a speedy recovery - she's a very brave lady! Also, many thanks indeed to the Mountain Rescue teams who were superb, and to Alexis and Des who were taking care of Barbara when I arrived from Dowstones Clough, where I'd been marshalling.

latest On Barbara is that she is home after a night in hospital. She's in good spirits despite a bad break of one of her wrist bones, She was thankful it wasn't her leg and sends thanks to all those who helped esp Alexis, Des and Andy (Werdna). she has asked me to pass on thanks to all those involved and the 2 rescue teams who carried her off.

Spoke to Barbara this morning. Still in good spirits despite being up to her third pot already :thunbdown: If the bones wont knit together naturally theres a chance she might have to have the wrist pinned. Shes worried about her knee which is giving her problems. I think shes more worried about this at the moment.

On the plus side - all the potatoes have been harvested and the spring cabbage was planted before the race which is a big relief. When Barbara not running shes gardening - I was seeing her digging up potatoes with one hand :eek:

She again said how lovely everyone was who helped her and how thankfull she was.

Just a quick reminder the the Shelf Moor Race will soon be upon us again,

To risk opening a can of worms, I will be asking runners to carry the minimum kit of pertex (or equivalent) jacket and trousers. I am happy to except that it is unlikely you would need this kit for the actual race. However based on our experiences from last year, when we needed the assistance of Mountain Rescue to help an injured runner off the hills, it does take about an hour for the MR after call out to reach some of the points on the course. Even in good conditions this is long enough for an injured runner, possibly in shock, to cool significantly. While not a perfect solution the body cover will provide some protection from the elements. Like last year some of the marshalls will be carrying survival bags, but again it takes time for the marshalls to reach an injured runner.

Tim will also be running the race.
