A fantastic day out despite the massive casualty list. I hope Pat's ankle and Roy's hamstring are okay and that Spot the staffie didn't get lost.... again. And I especially hope everyone really enjoyed the ice wall climbing up Bowfell ;)

Yes, good day out. Pats ankle is quite badly swollen - but it's been worse and hopefully it will get better soon. Glad to see from Arkels trace that I did slightly further at 16 miles although slightly less climb at 4,026ft (1,500 ft of that coming back up the Band looking for you) - probably because I was running down in the valley while you were all 'playing in the snow'. Good to meet up with you all and no doubrt see you again soon. I'm next up there the weekend of teh 23rd Feb.
Didn't manage much this morning - Was at bottom of Catbells a bit late at 9.15am, Vespa, but coudn't see you so headed up Catbells but ended up just coming back down again. Chest felt tighter than on Saturday morning, the wind was blowing a hooly and I thought f**k it!
Blog update :)
Great Blog enjoyed reading it. My dog is called Igg by the way, the other one I took on the last recce was Zag.

sounds like you all had an eventful day!
my day on the Coniston massif on Friday was a bit more straightforward
20M/7000ft in 8hrs out (probably about 7hrs moving :o )
coped well with repeated ups/down and still jogging along quite happily as it went dark, so boding well...
Anyone up for a recce next week ?
I'm planning to do Leg 3 as far as Scafell.
Back to Dunmail by the easiest route possible. Any suggestions for this bit ?
There is no easy way! Most direct is back to Angle Tarn, round to Stake Pass, climb up and skirt High Raise just to the south and then down Mere Beck to bring you out pretty much at Calf Crag. You can skirt High Raise to the north and aim for Greenup Edge... a bit less climb and certainly less steep, but a bit further. I've always found that climb up/round High Raise a right bugger.
It's a long way from Dunmail out to Sca Fell and back, with the return from Sca Fell to the Pike to factor in too. What are you looking at 8 to 9 hours total?
Dunmail to Scafell on a 23 hour BG schedule is about 5.5 hours. If you're reccying and navigating you could easily turn that into 6.5 hours. Hitting the turn on Scafell and figuring out the "quick" way back will be fun; I'd guesstimate the return journey would take at the very least another 4 hours :)
My preferences for reccying leg 3 and assuming only one car, are:
Dunmail as far as either Pike o Stickle or Langdale Combe: start & finish at Dunmail
Calf Crag to Bowfell/Esk Pike/Great End : start and finish in Borrowdale
Sergeant Crag to Bowfell: start/finish in Langdale
Bowfell to Scafell/Wasdale: start/finish at Boot/Brotherlikeld
If someone drops you off at Dunmail and is prepared to pick you up in Borrowdale then you can cut down to Borrowdale at almost any point depending on weather conditions/tiredness/time constraints.
Hoping to do the full route as I'm supporting Daz on leg 3. Want to get round it 2 or 3 times before then.
Bob,think it'll be a solo one with just one car.If its not going well I may do the first of your suggestions
Need some long days though, got the Vegan Welsh 3000s to prepare for.
Thanks everyone for the advice
a way I was told is seathwaite ,esk hause ,esk pike ,bowfell decent and ascend then out to the scafell,s hitting all the tops on way to great gable give you chance to do some of leg 4 as well all high ground together back down to seathwaite 6-7 hours correct me lads if im wrong anyway that out of the way.
great reccee on saturday except for hamstring went out again sunday catbells to robinson the route nigel goes fantastic apart from conditions cant understand why i never seen you nigel
old un you are right no rest back out today on bike
Whoops I forgot to post my garmin track. I was mostly stopping my watch when we were milling about on various summits, waiting on injured runners to catch up and undertaking dog rescue missions. Even with the tricky climb up Bowfell my net time to Bowfell summit was 3:16 which pretty much a 23 hour schedule time.

Hi all, it's Steve from Saturday's leg 3 recce. It was an amazing day out and great to meet everyone. My spaniels said that they were glad they stayed home for that one....
Good luck to all of you on your rounds; I hope to be able to offer some help over the next few months.
9.30 nigel good run out
Another update on my blog about this weekends recce of leg 4

Sounds like an epic (and tough!) day out Mark, great pictures - really give you an idea of how cold it must have been up there! We really need to get acquainted with Yewbarrow :w00t:
Will do :)
Cheers DT glad that you like the latest post on my blog, and you are right leg 4 is a great day out if done the way we did it.
Excellent day out with Daz yesterday. 8:45 start from Dunmail and off up Dollywaggon Pike to recce the last 3 peaks of leg 2. Lot of snow and ice on Fairfield and Seat Sandal + little visibility slowed us down as did a wrong line choice off Fairfield. Still we were only a couple of minutes outside Daz' target times so a pretty good effort.
Back to Dunamil for a quick break and then up the lovely Steel Fell climb. We got a bit lost in the snow on Sergeant Man and High Raise. Daz mentioned possibly High Raise first and then Sergeant and Thuncarr. Am planning to go back in a few weeks and have another look. Anyone any thoughts on that option ?
We did Thunacar and then turned back. Visibility wasn't getting better and i was shivering in 2 shirts,a fleece, windproof jacket and waterproof.
Got back to Dunmail and we had an hour or so to kill to avoid hitting Manchester in rush hour. I did suggest a few Steel fell hill reps but in the end we decided on a pint of Jennings and a burger and chunky chips at the first pub on the left back towards Grasmere.
Good to meet you Daz, and the Bolt Thrower on the way back was spot on !
That will be The Traveller's Rest then? :D
We were discussing the Sgt Man/High Raise thing the other day and of course it's very subjective .... it's also a very easy place in which to lose time, particularly if the conditions are bad, it's dark and you're a bit tired (or all three). I recce'd this area to death in 2011 and also ran it all anti-clockwise to make sure I knew the line. My own opinion is that it's pretty hard going and very tussocky if you opt to visit High Raise first, far better to focus on finding the right route to Sgt Man and enjoy the psychological advantage of a short run up to High Raise and then a nice, easy run over to Thunacar, it just seems a lot less of a struggle that way.
I agree. I think the initial climb up the beck after Calf Crag (Mere Beck?) when going direct to HR is quite nice... there's a little trod and it's bang on (pretty much) the direct line you want to be heading in. Once the angle eases and you're on the summit plateau of HR the trod vanishes and it's harder going in the tussocks, particularly during a wet period (so all the time then). The line to the summit is easy with visibility, but would need a decent bearing in the dark/clag. Of course you can aim off and hit the path coming up from SM, but that kind of defeats the point of a direct line in the first place! So, yeah, not a bad option in dry conditions with a good line if you like running in tussocks, otherwise SM first is much easier/safer.
Yes the Travellers Rest. Very nice it was, although I still think the Steel Fell hill reps were the way to go.:D
We sttuggled to find the right line up Sergeant. All the trods were covered in snow and the peaks weren't visible. Best line I guess is close to the fence posts and past Codale Head ? We ended up too far to the right following the becks.
Sargeant Man first for me on my attempt
