Dom - apparently I have been entrusted to look after the kissing gate...
What a job!
...I resisted posting a comment about strawberry chapstick...
Hopefully I'll be up on Baildon Moor, Trig Point, with my children. IF I get myself & my son back from the Bramley Park XC race in time ! Good luck to runners & cyclists.....but mainly runners !
Saz, may have to move you but not far!
Listen out to Radio Leeds between 9-10 in the morning for further details on the race!
Took a short trip out to Baildon Moor to see some of the action on this - Rob Jebb (c) was well clear of Tom Adams (r) who himself was well clear of the rest of the field coming down off the hill towards the road crossing so barring mechanical problems I'm guessing that's how it finished.
It did indeed, and Rob broke the record I think.
My run was fairly steady but it must be the first time I've overtaken Rob Jebb and Ian Holmes in a race. They both disappeared ahead into the distance not long afterwards, of course!
I was surprised myself to have a Bradford Olympic rider alongside of me on the narrow rocky-track from the 'quarry' up to the Glen Road crossing, & realise it was my (near) namesake.
Either I was going well, or he was suffering, as he's an ex GB squad selected Cyclo-Cross rider!
I ran off in front of him, but them he passed me again on the descent back to Glen Road, & I didn't see him again till the finish
I enjoyed it too, afterwards of course, too busy suffering during it, like everyone else.
Also, it was nice to see a few faces that I hadn't seen since Julys 'Holme Moss Fell-Race'
Was it just me, or were the start/finish fields boggier than normal?, but that said, the back of the course round Baildon Hill seemed a bit drier than last year
Well what a day! Thank you all for taking part and that you to all the marshals and official who helped me today.
Before anybody asks results will be on the Bingley Harriers Website early next week, possibly on the Bingley Harriers Forum earlier, I'll post a link. They won't be on any earlier as I'm off out to get very merry with the lads from Bingley!
Just to confirm that Rob Jebb (C) won in a new record time of 32.19 and Tom Adams (H) was second in 34.15. Although the cyclists had 5 finishers in the top 6 the Harriers won 101 to 125 and snatch back the Fishermans Trophy from the cyclists.
Thank you all again!
First time I've done this and really enjoyed it. Lots of to-ing and fro-ing with the cyclists going up and then back down. Just to make it more interesting, could you ban brakes from all cycles next year?
Thanks very much - I really enjoyed these photos as a slide show. They are so vivid, it was much like watching a video. I was holding my breath as a cyclist overtook a harrier in 3 frames. Is it just me, or were the cyclists really a bunch of sinister mud spattered reprobates (perhaps the highwaymen of old looked a bit like this) while the much cleaner harriers were just healthy, regular chaps. Except for the few females of course, who as usual managed to look SO pretty without any help from costume jewellery or high heels.
'Womble'
I'm sure I can speak (type) for all entrants
A huge thankyou to you & your team for organising the event, & sorting everything out before/at/after the race
it was my first time at this and was a little apprehensive at 'sharing' the path with cyclists, but it was brilliant! loads of little tussle on the way up & down with various bikers, plenty of mud (but managed to keep my shiny white top clean!), always a shout from behind to let me know I might get mown down! ans good support and marshalling.
being nearly taken out by jebby as he came off the moor was the highlight!
defo back next year as I had to leave before the festivites started.
great photos Stan
Relive the ascent out of the woods. The first part of the video has now been processed.
Apologies for the somewhat static location. I WAS marshalling at the time. http://www.vimeo.com/17051322
Dont forget to turn the sound up!!!
Just noticed, my avtar kept perfect time to the "beat"
I did this event - it nearly killed me! Enjoyed it though, and as I've only just started 'racing' (ahem!) I think I'll be back next year to compare/contrast my improvement.
I liked the moorland bits, not overly keen on that weird concrete track through the fields but it wasn't very long so never mind.
All in all, an enjoyable day out.
Cheers Womble and all the Bingleyites that made it happen.
and part two..........................http://vimeo.com/17062658
Results now up here, sorry for the delay!
Thanks Stephen, they make interesting reading.
For myself, I got a higher place, in a (only slightly) better time, out of a bigger field than last year.
Therefore I consider myself reasonably happy (having beaten riders who bet me last year)
There's only one small minor negative comment.... my surname's spelt wrongly in the results
You've spelt it the same way as that of Phil, Richard & Rob (of 'Bradford Olympic' & places 30th, 45th, & 115)
Looks like you finished 2 places and 6 seconds ahead of me Richard.
Not sure that the results are entirely correct since I finished just half a wheel behind a cyclist who I'd been battling with all the way around in a thrilling sprint finish that had spectators screaming in admiration (in my dreams).
Richard, I have amended the results to correct the spelling mistake, apologies.
Fishy is correct we did have a couple of people out of position but as they were so close together the times were roughly the same.
Thankyou, I get enough people asking me if I'm related to the 'Cross-Family Thackray' as it is:rolleyes:
(that said, I know them all reasonably well)
I've tried to explain the race to collegues at work, & it's difficult getting them to understand the principle
Digressing slightly;
I've suggested to my Club Secretary (there was the commitee meeting on Tuesday) that they should have a trophy for the clubs 'top Fell-Runner'
And....... seeing as I'm the only one who runs Fell, bar 2 other members who sometimes 'Bunny Run' & 'Trunce'
Well folks it's that time of year again to decide whether to don the knobbly tyres or the knobbly shoes.... yes you've guessed it Harriers V Cyclists is back!
This year it's on the 19th November at 2:00pm
I checked as soon as the dates were on the 'Bingley' website & I've confirmed I am day-off for that:thumbup:
Like the 'Withins Skyline', I want to bring an 'away-team' to this one.
I'm not 100% decided on whether I'm running yet... if an 'away-team' does attend, I might be tempted to ride & see how I do
- rode in 2007/2008 (08 = 54:16)
- ran in 2009/2010 ('10 = 47:08)
Plus, I'll be running 'Barnsley 10K' on the day-after, so I'll either be flying, or suffering at that
Sadly, I've not ridden enough cross recently to even have remotely considered the Myrtle park event on the Sunday:o (last cross I did was Temple Newsam, back in October '10!!)
I hope to have a go at this one. I'm told the start and finish are similar to the recent YVAA race. If it is, you're straight into a steep climb so warm up well.
I'm up for this. Was unsure to run or ride as dont have a cross bike. Looking at the pics there were some mtb's so think I'll give it a go on the bike.
Just down the road from me too
I found out to my cost in 2007, before I bought another cross-bike, that it can be hard on a MTB
Then, even though I'd bought a cross-bike, I compounded the error in 2008, by using the Trek again, thinking of the discs for the descent off Baildon Moor & the drop down to the finish
But, anyway, here's my 'take' on it, having run, & ridden it
Pro's;
1. Very big clearances, so less clogging, compared to a cross-bike, especially as I use 1.8" front & 1.5" rear tyres on mine, which also cause less drag, having less resistance (Specialized Houffalise??)
2. The front suspension was useful on the long rough descent from the top of Baildon Moor, then through the boulder strewn trail on Shipley Glen, & that concrete (railway) sleeper track
3. The disc-brakes actually offered retardation in the most horrible mixtures of cow-shit and mud, without chewing the pads to pieces, on the first/last 2 fields, & the drop back down to the finish
4. The low gearing made some parts rideable, that I know I'd have to run(stagger up[?), or at the least struggle to ride on the Cross bike see point 4 'Cons'
Con's;
1. The smaller frame in comparison to the Cyclo-Cross bike made the sections that required it to be carried very awkward (MTB = 17" frame/sloping Top-Tube. Cross-bike = 53cm Centre-Centre)
2. The weight was a large factor over the Cross bike (roughly 7 - 8Ib heavier?)
3. Gearing was too widely spread on the faster, rideable, sections
4. I could possibly ride certain sections that were 'questionable' (on grounds of gradient), as it was lighter than the Trek.
i have seen a couple of riders on 'fixes' at this event
I did it on a rigid single speed MTB a couple of year ago - it was awful....
Will be doing it on mi shoes this year ;-)
and there's me wondering what shoes to wear! Life's so simple for us runners.
