Had a grand day out in the snow running round with five K&C club-mates yesterday. My 1st Rombalds and I thought route, organisation and catering were right up there with the usual high standards of similar events. Lord only knows what people think they're doing throwing gel wrappers down on the ground; there's absolutely no excuse!
What a great day out,:) my 3rd Rombalds on the trot and by far the most enjoyable. Loved the new route with more running on the moor, great fun in snow ! and only having to climb the Chevin once ! Fantastic views on the tops, the tracks in the snow made it impossible to go astray, big thanks to the front runners for being snow ploughs, must have been well hard ! Really enjoyed the downhill bits, I'm not very fast at the best of times but love the descents and the conditions really suited me, I didn't fall over once. First time I've ever not been overtaken once I got onto Ilkley moor, apart from 2 guys powerwalking up the chevin and I passed both of them again on the gallop down the road to the finish. Big thanks to the organisers and all the volunteers standing around in the cold handing out drinks and cakes, one of my all time favourite races !
I know mine did as I kept stuffing them in my mates bottle holder all the way round.....one of the best days running I've had for a while....ran round with 2 others and we didn't fall over once.....maybe we were more careful than normal but thought the conditions were a real change to the norm....well done to all involved
It was a brilliant day out and a right good core workout. It was my 10th consecutive year on Rombald's and this is my 14th winter at this lark, and I have never enjoyed such conditions: dry powder covering the heather.
How did other people's times compare with their PBs on the old route? I was 19 minutes slower.
Well done and thanks to the organisers and marshals. I shall return.
But the route changes make the course 2 + miles longer, I realise some of the Chevin climb is now taken out, but surely that does not eqate to being able to cover the extra distance in 5 mins.
I was about 25 mins slower than last year...I thought the course was supposed to be longer but my GPS clocked it at about 22 miles ....I know a number of other gps wearers also got the same distance so I'm not sure where the extra miles went ?!?!?
Eh?
My Garmin was 21.89 and I know the route ie I didn't go more than 100 yards off course. (You can see my house on the section going up to Baildon Trig and on to Lanshaw Lad and I train over much of the course). I do not believe the old route was less than 20 miles. Received wisdom is it was around 22 but I would be interested if someone who has run it in the past with a Garmin could confirm.
Didn't do the Rombald's this year but last year I had a figure of 22 miles for the old course from Memory Map. Doesn't sound as if they are too different.
Muddy Retriever and I were at the top of the chevin thinking how they gonna get another 4 miles out of this !!!!! Anyway...it was a pleasant suprise..don't know why we all worry about an extra couple of miles either way...but we do :-)
Some numbers
2008 winning time 2.48.04
2009 winning time 3.13.56. This is slower by 15.4%.
Skyrac's first finisher
2008 17th position 3.12.55
2009 18th position 3.42.35. This is slower by 15.4%.
Aren't numbers wonderful?
However I suggest runners further down the field cannot just use say, 15%, to adjust their times because it is clearly tougher for the front runners to make a path through the virgin snow than for those well down the field whom the snow would hardly affect and indeed there is an argument that the normally boggy bits of the route were faster than usual because the ground was frozen.
I was basing my comments on this post from Chris Brown
"I've just plotted the new course changes on to a map and now make the total distance between 24+miles (pos 25), vs. the old route at 22+miles. I'll be doing a full recce over the xmas break, let me know if anyone wants to join me?
Though I was suprised when I read it because though the new loop is biggish a lot has been cut from the Chevin.
What's the extra bit that makes up for the loss of the loop out to East Chevin car park?
Have to agree that I thought course change was an improvement. Distance wise I got roughly similar to previous two years of just under 22.
I was quite pleased to go a few minutes faster than last year and 2007, makes extra miles in training worthwhile.
I plotted the route out on Tracklogs and it remained unchanged at 22 miles, give or take a few tenths.
I uploaded my pictures last night:

Really enjoyed the Rombalds yet again, good feel to it. Must say the Gel packets were an annoyance to me too, especially the two Go ones placed neatly on a tree stump.
All in all another good day out.
Hi to the forumite who said hi to me , sorry u always remember my name. Hope u had a good run.
Talking of Gel wrappers, it's strange but I never noticed any, and I usually do notice that sort of thing. Perhaps I was snow blind or too far off in my ecstatic zone :D
A few from my club are doing this in February. Good run over Baildon Moor,Ilkley Moor,Otley Chevin.
Followed by afternoon compulsory pub crawl around Guiseley :D
any other of you forumites up for it ?
I hope to be there with various other Keighleyites. Some more of last year's snow would be good :)
Got my entry in.
Forgot SAE.
Now got that on the way too...:o
I was thinking of doing this again as I have not done the new route.
Wrong thread maybe but is anyone interested in a recce on 29 or 30 Dec?
I'll be up for this, don't think I'll have chance to attend a recce, hopefully I've done it enough times not to get lost on the moor now
My entry's in for the 10th consecutive year. I wouldn't miss this one for anything. Last year's conditions were the best ever (apart from the slippy-slidy black ice on the lane into Menston).
Not sure I'll make it onto the start line, but the prospect of being out and about on the course to provide "encouragement" is quite appealing. ;)
anyone got a link for entry forms?
