Anyone going to do the Malvern Midsummer Marathon next Saturday? Organised by Bristol and West LDWA.
Anyone doing Peakers stroll next week-end (1st July) - Wonderful route and normally red hot day!!
Thinking about it. Did Kinder Trog couple of weeks ago and had forgotten how much I love the Peak!
is it a 9.30 start for runners and walkers cant seem to find out
Walkers between 0930 and 1000
Runners between 1130 and 1200
You're asked to register at least an hour before your start
Regarding Peakers Stroll - I noticed that there was no time given for the runners' start on the entry form so I rang the organiser last night. He was out but I spoke to his wife who said that they are not having any runners this year. Walkers only - 9:30 start. She said that this was down to 'insurance problems'.

Thanks Steve for that info.
Saves a journey !!
No problem - I've emailed the organiser to express my disappointment and encourage him to have a rethink for next year.
Maybe if one or two others did the same ... he is Alan Brignell ([email protected])
Cheers...
Peakers Stroll update - email received from organiser who says he hopes the problem will be solved next year and runners welcomed again. Let's hope so - looking forward to those cakes again...

A little reminder .... Rhayader Mountain Trail next Saturday 18th. A field of good runners entered for the 43 mile Montrail event, anyone running it is elligible for prizes. But anyone else can enter and jog/walk it if you want to - plenty of food stops etc.
Also a challenging 29 mile course and a 18 miler for those who only do short runs .
If anyone else is injured with nothing to do at the weekend and fancies helping out in the wilds of mid Wales, we can soon find you a job for the day :).
I'm always amazed at the low cost of LDWA events and they provide a meal . They are often the few places where one can find an organised Ultra , its just nice to run with others at times, especially if there's hours of running involved.
Doing White Cliffs 50 in Kent in September as qualifying for next year's Yoredale 100. £12 with food and drinks thrown in and I think, a cooked breakfast. Beats £15-20 for many road half-marathons:)
I totally agree Derby Tup, it be interesting to see how much the Leeds abbey Dash organiser think they can fleece out of people this year. If it's too expensive i don't enter, i would encourage others to do the same. I know they have policing etc and Road closures but some of these are prohibitively expensive.
The Rombalds stride in feb is £8 , thats snacks en route, tea , coffee, meal at the end. Its a great day out too. I'll definately be there.
Have you been in The Derby Tup in Chesterfield? Great pub
A couple of friends were doing the 'Race the Train', which they have done every year and she has won previously. It is now £18 entry (without a train ride back  ), they felt this was seriously taking the ****.
Helping me out instead.
We include breakfast (toast, cereal) 5 checkpoints with food and drink, good meal at finish. Plus Montrail donate the running prizes and spot prizes for £6.50 pre-entry fee.
And you can run 43 miles...... at least a decent day out :D.
sounds great molehill, wish i lived a bit nearer. keep up the good work fella.
You all missed a very interesting day out .
A few muddy patches slowed most of them down ;)
They sure did miss a great day out thanks Mid Wales LDWA for introducing me to the Cambrian hills i certainly have a score to settle with those little B*****s;).
Give my thanks to all involved in the organisation and cheerful manning of the well provisioned checkpoints in what can be best described as DAMP conditions (the cup of tea at checkpoint 5 was pure nectar).
See you next year?:D
What a great day out: I really enjoyed the course and the marshalls were brilliant, really supportive and cheerful despite standing around in the drizzle all day. Those chunks of cheese at the final checkpoint were an inspired idea :)
I was one of those who had to downgrade to the short course after struggling in the tussock grass above Claerwyn for ages: I'll be back next year for revenge :)
Thanks again all, top day.
Clare (no. 42)
Hi Muddy a shot in the dark but the cider went down well when i got back to the van:).
As to distance socks this event was well worth the 350 mile round trip.
On the full 43 mile Montrail 'race' (survival?) route:
35 Starters.
22 Finished.
13 DNF.
Cambrian tussuck grass obviously doesn't suit everyone ;) .
>JohnK Hehe very glad to hear it, and well deserved :) I had a couple of resorative pints also: finished the day off nicely.
Are you doing the Bullock Smithy in a couple of weeks? Maybe see you there if so.
Clare
Gosh, hadn't realised there were so many Forumites there - and the overall winner (by a huge margin) was zlod, but he seems to have ceased posting on the forum.
I went over on the spur of the moment as a couple of my club mates were running (:D :D ) and offered my assitance to Moley, so found myself helping at checkpoints 1, 2 and 4 (I was in the purple jacket). What a fun day out - normally, when marshalling, there's no contact with the runners but here there was time to sit over tea and cake (I must have put on about 3kg:eek: ), discuss past races and future plans etc.
Well done Moley - hope the missing runners haven't caused too many nightmares - hope to see you at Pumlumon.
Ok here is another great upcoming LDWA event in cumbria this time.
Namely BOYDS KENDAL SKYLINE on sunday the 9th of september starting @ 0830 from Burneside Cricket club GR 503 954.
It is only the second year of this event and there is a choice of either 25 miles or 8.2 miles the 25 mile route takes you over Potter Fell, Benson Knott, The Helm, Scout scar and Cunswick Fell.
I did it last year as a walk with the missus and me dog, but i have done it several times since as a run and it is a good training run easily on a par with `Thats Lyth` for those of you familiar with that.
Check it out at :- www.morecambebayandbowland.homestead.com
See you there, hopefully i will be running it this year.
Boy Wonder> I'd reverted to lurker status. The Montrail series seems to be where my focus is these days. I spotted you at checkpoint 1, but was obviously not thinking straight at 2 and 4 as I didn't notice you there.
Anyway, Rhayader was a brilliant event. It couldn't be faulted. Great route, great organisation, great marshalling, great food (it was pretty overwhelming at the end trying to decide what to eat from the feast before me when I couldn't think totally straight). I even think the weather was good. I ran most of the way in a T-shirt and the rain stopped me from getting too hot (a contrast to the Downland Ultra at the beginning of July).
I've never won a race from the front before, so Rhayader was pretty nerve wracking. I was looking over my shoulder all the time. I kept thinking to myself "the chasing pack will be running this bit, so I've got to too" and that kept me going.
Hope to be back on the fell racing scene at The Black Mountains race. Then there is the South Wales Traverse that has been nagging for a couple of years now...
Plumlumon will be an excellent race. It could well be the decider in the Montrail championship.
If there is a lesson to be learnt here, it is that you were spot on correct :)
Looking at the times, Alan and Mark were 21 mins behind you at the last checkpoint, and you opened this gap by less than a minute over the last hour. So they were chasing you at about your speed. Well done the final effort was clearly a good move, any slowing and they would have closed on you.
Tim Laney lost 10 minutes over this section, having been virtually up with Allan and Mark, so a lot can hapen in the final hour ;)
Nice to see you on here Zlod - when we meet again I must ask where the name came from - you didn't see me at CP's 2 and 4 because with your rocket-like speed on the day you were through each before I got there!
Well done on an awesome run!
Probably old news but.....Just realised that LDWA members get15% discount at Cotswold Outdoors! :D Wooo-hooo!
I'm planning on doing the Wistanstow Walk next weekend. I'm new to LDWA events and looking for a bit of advice on footwear. I'm just starting to build up running after about a year off for various reasons and was planning on fast walking most of this but with the odd bit of jogging to break it up. Given that I'm carrying a fair bit of lard at the moment would I be OK wearing trainers. Is that what most walkers wear at LDWA events or do they go for boots?
Thanks
I use NB trail shoes for LDWA events boots are just to heavy and cumbersome to do any running in.
Walk and jog is ideal buildup after time off. I would always go for the trainer option (start on something substantial, no need for 'racers' or anything fancy like that) in fact few people seem to walk in boots these days. I don't know the walk you are doing, but at this time of year you should be ok.
Do you live anywhere near your avatar, which I know well?
I can see it from my bedroom window. Dominates my life as most of work is travelling around the area within sight of it.
I've only ever done one of the LDWA type events before - the Fellsman this year. I loved it, esp the getting fed bit!
I want to try new types of event and so have decided to do the Open to Offas event on Sept 15th in North Wales.
Anyone else done this, or doing it this year?
ST
I am doing it also doing Boyds Kendal Skyline this coming sunday.
Another good event to round of the year is Round Rotheram a suprisingly scenic 50 miler as the name suggests round Rotheram, not an LDWA event but yo get fed at various checkpoints and at the finnish
