Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
I'm feeling nostalgic for Corpach & a pint at the Grog & Gruel. Never done the Yacht Race as such, but I raced the boats twice on a bicycle a good few years back, climbing each peak as well. I came second the first time, beaten only by the fastest catamaran. Got a trophy too!
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
3 days of racing at the lead two boats are only 200meters apart:D
3rd and 4th are just 2km behind creeping up the coast.
This could be the tightest race for years:)

Thats a neat idea! Hey, Toff, why didn't we think of this??

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
OK:eek: Next year, unless of course a boat comes along.....
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Zlod and co are now in the lead. lots of place changing going on. they now have the Bore and the Sound of luing to cross.
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Great sailing from Zlod's crew on EADS - but at 1.3knots speed it might take a while to reach Fort william.
I was lucky enough to have been sailing in the same area a couple of weeks ago, in beautiful weather but very light winds - we spent a night in the loch where Zlod is at the moment, cooked mackerel on a driftwood fire - heaven!! Suspect the 3PYR guys won't be stopping! We also made it through Corryvreckan, but at slack water and light wind it wasn't all it had been built up to be!

I'm with you there. The first time I biked it I had a mate on one of the boats. He was sick all the way from Barmouth to Ravenglass, then ran up Scafell Pike & back (no bikes allowed in those days). Next time he cycled with me instead!

I thought all you learnt to sail before you learnt to walk in holland.

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
only 14 miles to corpach with EAD/ Zlod with a 2 mile lead but with 6 boats with in 6 miles of them and they are only traveling at 1.5-2 knots it's still any one race. The wind could die completely over night leaving a long hard row up the Loch. can't see any one getting there for breakfast. Some boats could be running low on food and water
Although once through the Corran Narrows there should be no more problems with tides etc.

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Come on Team Isle of Man!

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Have the runners been sat tracked in the past?

not sure Addy but one of the transmitters was on the motor way near London yesterday. I'm guessing one of the retiring skippers took his home by mistake. Not showing now though.

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
4 boats are IN!!
EADS and Zlod should win now barring an accident with a one hour advantage on the hill. They should make the summit as I'm typing and be finished by 10.00ish
Well done guys Get your self to the shower before the fleet comes in
Second could be too close to call between the Skennaughs Team IOM and the Dark Peak/Accellerate girls Hazard Chase and Nunatak who all set off within 15 minutes of each other.

That gives both Martins about 48 hours to get back for their respective Cotswold Way Legs then....

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Great effort from EADS Innovation Works team. Many years ago Zlod's main sport was rowing, so perhaps he recaptured the old magic rowing up to Fort William.
An excllent performance - I've really enjoyed following it over the last few days.

I was wondering - I know Zlod normally has to run the CWR first and then dash to Barmouth - means TeamBath might keep him in sight this year:D
Are you running on Saturday - if so, which stage / team - will look out for you (if I don't know you already!!) as will be around all day timekeeping etc after an early run on leg 2.

Not sure Al, Can't see from work, bah! Can anyone give us finishing positions of teams?
Didn't get your message 'til half ten last night. TTs start at the Cronk, near Ballaugh. WOW! you missed some mouthwatering sights!
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Team Isle of Man, I have them with a finish time which puts them in second place. But they show as unclassified??

I think they may have had assistance earlier in the race?? maybe they had to out on their engine by the swellies to avoid a collision. They are allowed to continue but not get a place?
But thats means the Dark Peak/ Acellerate girls come 2nd. well done Janet and caroline:D

Fell asleep after my early morning session anyway! Still the girls will be out in their skinsuits another day!!...

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Team Isle of Man recived assistance when they ran aground. Darn it! Well done to all who took part, great racing!

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Wow… what an epic week! Such a tough race. High winds, no wind, rowing through the night, running out of drinking water and, of course, the obligatory mountain runs. I really have suffered the full range of emotions.
Whether the result stands or not, we crossed the finish line in 2nd position and I’m extremely proud of everything Team IOM achieved especially as we were all 3PYR virgins.
Well done to Zlod & the EADS team on a great win. After such a difficult 1st leg to Caernarfon the boys must of thought it would be an uphill struggle (pardon the pun!) but they came through great guns. Thanks for the route hints Martin.
When we arrived at Corpach, the last thing we wanted was a yacht close behind. Unfortunately for us, there was another yacht 10mins behind! When we realised it was Janet & Caroline off Hazard Chase we knew it would be a tough ask & we had to give everything to stay ahead of them on the Ben. Congratulations to them on a great result, their SP time being particularly impressive.
There were many highs & lows over the week but the abiding memories I’ll have of the race are extreme disappointment & anger. After our incident with the rock & the outside assistance we received we immediately phoned the Head of the Race Committee to explain what happened and ask what the score was. He assured us, 3 times no less, that we would not be DQ’d and to crack on. Acting on this advice, we decided to row out of what was still a precarious situation rather than switch the motor on, which would have meant us retiring. We continued to row for hours and eventually hauled ourselves into 2nd place at Corpach. It later transpired that the Head of the Race Committee who we spoke to immediately after the incident knew we would be DQ’d but “didn’t have the heart to disappoint us over the phone!”
What really does hurt is that members of one team have labelled us as unsportsmanlike, which frankly makes my blood boil. Never in my sporting life have I tried to gain an unfair advantage over a fellow competitor and I am incredibly angry to have these accusations put to me. At all times we acted under instruction of the race officials.
My heart says to fight this tooth & nail but my head says to rise above it (in a Cool Runnings type way)! What’s done is done & life’s too short to dwell on these things.
On the plus side, our run times still stand and we had the opportunity to meet some fantastic characters over the course of the week. I’ll certainly be looking in future years to see how some of the guys get on.
We are honest sportsmen & women and I really don’t want people to get the wrong impression about any of us. I’m still very emotional about the whole episode given the extraordinary commitment required to complete the course.
This is an honest & measured account of what happened & I believe we acted with dignity & integrity at all times.
Cheers
Rich
Marvin - great to meet you at Whitehaven, if only briefly. Well done & hope you enjoyed the race
Steve & Allan – thanks for the support, sorry we couldn’t quite finish the job

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Nice one Pinchy - I was following the race via the sat tagging on Sleepmonsters and messages to crew of Madam Wen. Some awesome run times; great effort.

It's a reversal this year. I've dashed back from Corpach and am running the Cotswold Way tomorrow morning. I'm on leg 1, running for IPWireless Harriers. Up at 4am for the drive to the start: don't expect great things.
Compo> I thought those years rowing in the bumps would be the high point of my athletic career. I never thought that 20 years later, rowing would play such a huge part in what probably is the high point. We did a LOT of rowing in that race. Once we realised that we weren't going to win it on the running, we put absolutely everything into the rowing. The runners rowed for about 10 of the 24 hours before the Ben Nevis run. We were even rowing up the final mile to Corpach. The key to rowing is to remember: it's all in the snatch.
Happy now!
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
I think you did bloody brilliantly Rich. Chin up, you'll nail it next year.
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
You guys did everything you should have. I do not believe you DQ'ed, but unranked.
A real shame as you were above board in all that you did!
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
I bumped in to Janet McIver in the supermarket car park on sat morning and then saw the last team in on the Ben and some of the Support team from Hazard Chase on a Ramsey Reccie.
I was planning on dropping in at Corpach but apparently nearly every one had gone.
Well done to all finishers. Always a tough race.

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
It looks like Starship has won the Tilman trophy. They're Toffer's mates (I think). Good effort, especially given that that was their first Three Peaks Yacht Race. They looked like they were sailing well when we were side by side off the Mull of Galloway.
Ian> the best time to be at the finish this year was Thursday. There were loads of boats around, with boats arriving all the time. Corpach lock was a real sight. I think the delights of Tobermory and whiskey distilleries has caused the fleet to evaporate!
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Yup, Starship got the Tilman, fantastic stuff. Ironic really, for if Wheeze and I had been running we wouldn't have been doing the Tilman!
.....just chasing Zlod for King of the mountains!
-
Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
Really enjoyed watching this unfold. One to dream about. Well done all involved.

Re: Three Peaks Yacht Race
The high points for me on Stormer were overtaking five other teams on the Snowdon run, getting up to 5th/6th place overall at the front of the following group in the Sound of Jura on Wednesday evening (before throwing it away and dropping right back down the field), pulling back to 14th by the time we arrived at Corpach. Our main rowers did a fantastic job in most parts of the race. Given that our yacht is rather heavy, and this was a very light weather race, we were reasonably satisfied with our result, but we know it could have been better.
The racing was so close and we kept meeting up with the same ones over and over again as we all arrived at the same tidal gates.
The whole event was very cometitive on the water and on the runs, but when we were in harbour, the banter between the teams couldn't have been better. Can't wait for next year!:)
Thanks to Nick, Paul, Chris and Mark for having me along. At least we got the whole boat to the finish this time!:D
P.S. Good to meet up with Pinchy in Whitehaven
