At the time of writing this, (Tuesday 5th Jan 2010 at 5pm ish), the race is still on.
However, keep at eye on this thread.
The forecast doesn't show any signs of an improvement, with more snow for later in the week. If things don't improve, the race will be called off.
The moorland tracks are covered with deep snow but are passable.
I have an alternative contingency route.
But I feel that it would be foolish to ask people to risk making the journey to this event with roads in a treacherous state. Added to this, the pub carpark is out of bounds and the police will take a dim view of us parking you on the main road (A629).
As I say, keep an eye on this thread. A definate decision will be made by Thursday 7th Jan 2010.

:( dawn weather my xc cancelled now, hope this race goes on if the conditions (somehow) improve. Although be more of an issue if surrounding lanes stay too icy.
It is with deep regret that I have had to cancel the Ovenden fell race (Sat 9th Jan).
Some of the surrounding minor roads are treacherous and the carparks at the reservoir and at the pub are coated in ice or packed snow. There is simply nowhere to park cars. The weather forecast doesn't look much like it's going to improve.
I have been on the phone since I made the decision, letting runners, club representatives and webmasters and the local 'paper know the decision. I would be grateful if all who read this bullitin could get on the phone and let as many people as possible who might have intended travelling to the race know the situation.

The FRA calendar is fairly tightly packed with fixtures these days so it will be difficult - also, The Ovenden wouldn't be half the race it is if the weather was nice!
You may be interested to see what me and Chris got up to today because of our enforced day off from organising races. We went to the Summit Inn and TRIED! to recci the White Holme Circular, It was pretty hopeless with thigh deep snow and sheet ice on the Pennine Way.

Its comforting to know someone else followed one of those strange creatures walking with two feet and two hands leaving tracks in the snow.
As i followed the one going up sail pass I with ad-libbed the odd knee.

It is a cracking race this one. I did it on my 50th birthday a couple of year ago. Unfortunately can't make it this time.
Don't forget what Allan says, no kit,no run !! can get very bleak up on the moors
Very tempted, this may trump the GM XC championships which are on the same day.

oh no ! I was really looking forward to it!
I'm very sorry. Up until about 10am this morning, everything was going great and we were all set for another cracking event. I was really looking forward to it esp, after having to cancel due to sheet ice across the car parks last year.
As usual, i had booked a half day off work (I use my holidays) for course flagging.
A sudden dump of snow over the next 2 hours brough chaos to the roads, Halifax was gridlocked. Snow soon turned to ice and I watched one car driving steadily and surely straight up the kerb and into a lamp post. 1-30pm and I was still struggling to get to the venue in order to start flagging, (usually a 20 min drive.)
My mate called me and said the schools were shutting and he wouldn't be able to make it as he needed to go pick his children up.
Now it was going to be a 3 hour job to mark the course alone. Not viable in daylight.
I turned the car around and headed home.
I'm sorry. I tried to get the race on but again, i was beaten by the weather.
Are my races jinxed ?!

John o'Goats - Saturday 8th January. Lyme Park was inspected late on Friday afternoon and there is a small amount of snow, with a forecast for overnight rain.

It will now take place on Saturday 19th February at 11-30am
Full WATERPROOF Whole Body Cover MUST be carried - No Kit = No Run.

this looks like a great race, is the course fully flagged. It states navigational skills are required, and I'm quite new to navigating. If it is fairly well flagged then I will turn up for it. It looks like a great race.Quote:

I'm doing it hopefully. Last did it on my 50th birthday 3 year ago. Champagne in the Causeway Foot pub afterwards to celebrate !

Also, please car-share where possible. Since the last race (2009), double yellow lines have been painted on Ogden Lane and all the way up Syke Lane (the lane opposite the pub). Perhaps forumites could arrange to meet somewhere then share a lift to the venue?
RACE PARKING IS ON THE FIELD TO THE REAR OF THE CAUSEWAY FOOT PUB
The Ogden reservoir car parks will be chock full as there is a walking event on starting at 9-30 - 10-00am ish.
