There must be a lot of foolish runners around the world then! The course is about 5k. First half-mile is on road, the next mile is on tracks and grass.At the top you go round the tower and return the same way.

It's a climb right from the start, gradually increasing in steepness up to the tower.

The trick is not to go to fast at the beginning.Some runners blaze along the road and then come to an almost stop, when the track steepens.

If it's dry, road shoes are fine.If wet you want a combination shoe like Running Bear Gladiators.

A few helpful tips:

1) If you overcook it on the climb, the downhill will be painful, slow, and the likelihood is that all your hard work on the climb will be wasted as you'll get overtaken. For best results try and run a fairly even race.
2) Don't stop!... but at the same time don't be afraid of walking on the tough bits, you won't be the only one, keeping moving is important. This may/may not apply to you depending on fitness.
3) Remember, as far as everyone else knows this could be you 159th race, only you know it's your first. Don't be worried, you won't make a fool of yourself.

Also, this race is most likely way marked due to it's length so you'd have to try uber hard to get lost.

do you live nearby? might be worth doing a recce to give you a little confidence,

Enjoy it, and have a quick glance round the views as you go round the pike.

It will be over all too quickly and then you will be looking for race No 2.

Thanks alot everyone, you have re-built my confidence because yesturday/today i was having second thoughts on doing the race. As i only found out about the race not long ago, ive only started training :( ,so i dont know how i will fair on the race itself.
I suppose i have nothing to loose but it all in the mind isnt it. Ive heard the atmosphere is meant to be really good so hopefully people wont look twice if they see me struggling.
Ive just bought some new shoes for it aswel hehe

It has reached the limit in the past.

Route finding is not an issue with this race - just follow the crowd (like I will be doing) and, as has been mentioned before, run a steady race; it is really easy to go hell for leather right from the off and just die on the climb.

Right im still having doubts whether to run it or not. I dont know if my fitness is up to standards and i fear im guna flop on the way up or something. I have quite good will power and i can force myself to keep moving when the going gets tough but how low level of fitness is too low to run this race would you say?

its ok if you havn't/don't, two weeks is enough time to get yourself round a race like rivington pike. let us know and im sure you'll get lots of advice

Fowler your almost a Man, and being such means your going to have to get used to making DECISIONS. When you meet a nice girl, the last thing she'll want to hear is you doubting yourself.

So say to yourself 'I will do the Rivington Pike race.' Then do some 3 mile runs to prepare. Remember plenty of good runners have to walk on parts of the course.

Just find tomcee and follow him - you won't go far wrong:D

Get you cheque in the post and run every other day.You don't want to over-do it but you could get seven good sessions in between now and the 22nd.

My one and only race was last years Rivi run and I haven't done much running in between so don't worry too much about coming last :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

I took it too steady last time and felt I could have give it a bit more welly on the uphill bit but the advice to go easy is good.The atmosphere around the race is really good with lots of smiling faces (and fearsome looking thigh muscles :eek: :eek: ).

Get your form in,you won't regret it.

Slipped about a bit on my Saucony road shoes so looks like I'll have to sort some shoes aswell.

No padlock symbol as you don't pay by credit card, you transfer by Paypal or some other electronic method.

Right!.....ive paid online and im running :D. All i need now is my fell shoes to hurry up and arrive, the postman doesnt seem to be in a rush:mad: but what can i do eh?

Never run a fell race before. But sent my entry off for Rivington this morning. Do I need fell running shoes for this race??

Nice one Fowler.Just paid online myself, a quid extra seemed OK to me.Saved me a couple of stamps and all the messing about with wire to connect my lappy to the printer.:( :(

I did a little recce at the weekend running in ordinary road shoes.It was a bit slippy at times and you could really do with a proper pair of fell shoes but I reckon you'd get away with trainers on this one,there's a fair bit of road,cobbles
and thick tufty grass.

Well im not specifically aiming for a time because ive not been up the fell since i was about 8 so i dont know what to expect.(planning a recce) My aim is to finish;) , not come last and to beat my mate who im hopefully dragging along with me on the day.
I went for an early morning run this morning up this hill near me, round it and back down. The distance is about 3 miles and the height is quite steep but nothing compared to rivington. It took me 20 minutes so i suppose i have hope for rivington eh :)

Bant - you'll only need fell shoes if it has been wet, trainers are ok, but the wet grass can be a bit much in road races

The race itself starts from the park gates on Lever Park Avenue, and goes along Lever Park Avenue upto Old Will's lane, which is a right turn and which runs up towards the pike alongside Rivington and Blackrod School.

Above the school the route follows the main farm entrance track towards Higher Knoll farm.

Whilst the farm track turns sharp left towards the farm the race itself continues straight ahead up the field track to Georges Lane.

At this point the route up to, and round the Pike is then self evident from Georges Lane.

The race returns by exactly the same route.

Park on the road. Start is on the road just by the garden/war memorial. Run down road and turn right before school then follow the concrete road up, forking right then follow the road round to the left, with a farm on the left carry on, crossing a paved path after the steep grassy bit and straight up to the Pike. Then: FLY BACK DOWN

car park at the Crown is coned off from memory, but get there earlyish and should be plenty of road parking within 150 yds of the the Crown (away from the course - Chorley New Rd).

This is a great race and a real good event - one that all runners (non-fell) should do at least once. If there's some decent weather it can be a a great day.:cool:

I went for a recce today but i only walked it because i was with my faimily.....but i walked up the opposite side of the fell as thats closer to my house than round the other side. I got an idea of what the fells like but i have no idea what the start of its like. I still dont really know where to start from as i dont know horwich. Does anyone know what the pubs called that we have to register at, and even better....what the postcode is so i can put it into the sat-nav so i can find it on the day.

Pub is called the Crown hotel.

You get your number from The Crown Hotel.It's at 1 Chorley New Road,Horwich,BL6 7QJ at the junction with Crown Lane.It's just a short walk round to the start at Lever Park Ave by the war memorial.

I did a trail run today and got a time a full minute slower than last year :eek:

Mind you my legs are a year older.:rolleyes:

Time for some emergency training methinks.

Do a few reps up and down Wood Lane - you'll be alright ;) .

Could anybody tell me where the junior races are run from, we've never done this race before..

Just entered online for this short jaunt, didn't fancy the 160 mile round trip to Stair or the bogs of Fiensdale so Rivi Pike it is.

Junior races go from the track above the school - the one that forks left from the seniors route when you have passed the school.

Many thanks for that but I need to know what school and what road it's on so I can use a route finder.
