IMO sore calves means your doing it right!!!
I'm now at the stage where I've got sore balls [of my feet] from constant granite pounding.
would be interesting to do a race in them though, I think I could have easily barefooted the last Hereford off-road league, and it was probably dry enough for the 'brams. I suppose that is the ultimate test really...
I did my first barefoot run yesterday, but without shoes, because I can't justify the cost right now. 2 miles on the local running track felt just about right, with sore skin and 2 blisters, but my legs felt fine.
This morning though, they were pretty tight when I woke up but they'll be fine for a run at lunchtime.
So shoe-less barefooting works well too, even if it's tough on your skin, but that's part of the reason for doing it I guess.
Barefoot is best ;)
Anyone else found that they can no longer stand wearing "normal" running shoes anymore? Whenever I stick on a pair of shoes now, they feel like cloggs! I dug out a pair of racing flats I used to wear before I started to suffer from shin-splints and went for a 2 hour run last night and it felt pretty good. My feet could still feel almost everything they touched which was good. Because they are so low profile I found that having no grip wasn't that bad because I could feel the ground.
Is there a trail racing flat out there? I know you can get Inov8 and Walsh's under 250g but I'm talking about sub 150g!
Haha...can't wait!
Terry
I too can no longer tolerate cushioned shoes. I recently sold my Salomon Ultras and no longer use my Adidas Kanadia. I run off road in aqua shoes (trail running not fell running), on grass barefoot and run on road with Adidas Adizero Pro or Feiyue shoes from Tai Chi Finder. I'm still looking for a pair of fell running shoes (tried Mountain Glads but they didn't fit) and may go for the Inov 8 talons - though I may wait to see if they bring something else out that is lighter!
What size feet are you Richard
9.5
I think I can guess what you're going to ask - are my Kanadia for sale?!!
I was thinking about selling them but need something to run in on the stuff where my aqua shoes are not suitable so for the moment I'm holding onto them.
If on the other hand you were wanting my shoe size because you have some Fivefingers you want to sell very cheaply then let me know!!
Im afraid i was deal hunting but im near enough size 11-12 so not so good. :D
Sorry I can't oblige
I do have something that may be of interest to you for sale nas a barefoot runner

:p
I suggest that instead of selling it you try and run barefoot - that will sort out the problems
Im doing a barefoot hill rep session on thursday ive also ran a 1500m barefoot after i forgot my spikes and did 4:35 so only 15s slower than usual
Hi Richard
I've found a couple of companies that can resole any shoes with a fell sole (Walsh type studs) for £18. So I'm thinking that I might get my Kanadia out and get all the cushioning and sole unit chopped off and replaced with a fell sole. Might be a good compromise until Inov8 bring out a super light flexible foot glove :)
Terry
Sounds good
Let me know how you get on
I'm not so much into "barefoot" running but follow the Chi running style, midfoot strike, minimal neutral shoe, etc..I have found that the best fell shoe that fits that catagory for me is the Inov8 X-Talon and use Feelmax Panka's for, grass, trail, etc...
The X-Talons have replaced my 315' & 305's which as somebody put earlier now feel like wearing clogs....
X-Talons - brilliant!
I tried it tonight and it has both positives and negatives.
Positives are that you can feel everything and it definately will improve ankle strength.Negatives if the grass is slippy your toes dig in and that could lead to breakages
The X-Talons without the footbed will give you a neutral shoe, minimal amount of cushioning, good proprioception.
I do at least one run(jog) a week barefoot on grass to help strengthen my feet/ankles/calfs,i carry my X-Talons for when it gets rocky or thistles:eek:
This is the best option for now until the "Ultimate bare foot racer"
I also follow Chi Running ( I had a few lessons to make sure I'm doing it properly!!). I managed to bag a pair of Inov-8 Flite 230 which are really good. They are nice and low to the ground and VERY light. The sole is OK at this time of year but you'd really struggle in mud and down steep slopes. Not too sure what the equivalent Roclites are, I found the 315 "clumpy" in comparison!! I'd like something in between the talons for ultras where some extra grip is needed but not too aggresive like the Talons.
Might try some Talons as well though when my Walsh give up!!
The ROCLITE 285 has the same 2 cushion midsole as the F-Lite 230 & X-Talons
its the same fit but has the sticky rubber Roclite sole.
This may be what your looking for.
Cheers - I did see them on the Inov8 site but haven't been able to find any shop that stocks them to try on!!
I might have to buy online. Would the sizing be the same as the 230??
The ROCLITE 282 has the same 2 cushion midsole as the F-Lite 230 & X-Talons
its the same fit but has the sticky rubber Roclite sole.
This may be what your looking for.[/QUOTE]
and when is Inov8 bringing out the 'Ultimate Barefoot Racer'?!
Can't you just write "Inov-8" on your barefoot with a magic marker??
I've been using my VFF since easter and am up to a couple of runs a week in them. This week I did a 9 and 11 mile run which is the furthest I've gone in them. At the end of the 11 miler my feet looked like they'd been through a meat grinder. Multiple blisters and sore bits as the blister plasters move about after a few miles.
Anyone else noticed how much they stink? I think a cycle in the washing machine is required for mine.
Best thing for me though has been the ability to use them to take pressure of strains caused by running in shoes. Did 12 miles on Tues and had some niggles in achilles so used VFF for next 2 days and felt no niggles at all. Hopefully this will allow to me to manage high mileage each week as my long run today in shoes went without a hitch.
Its worth investing in some Injinji socks when you first start up. They wick away sweat (and stink), prevent friction and adds a little extra comfort.
Its also worth taking extra care with your feet, moisturising them, trimming nails etc
Forest track + Mud + Tree roots + Vibrams = FUN
Had a very magic vibram moment today, I've learnt how to keep my balance in what can only be described as "conditions warranting studs," wearing the slickest running "shoes" ever made! Absolutely hooned it down the trail, thought I was a gonner more than once, emerged from wood back in to town with the biggest smile on my face.
You can forget logging miles, interval training, reps whatever, this is what running is about, pure and simple LOL FUN!!
I know what you mean Twister! I can't believe how quickly my feet and legs are adapting to all the different types of terrain!
Running is pure joy in the VFFs (apart from the odd shard of rock that pierces through your foot!)
Christopher McDougall's Born to Run - personal message to inov-8 head designer
A good friend of mine is about to race a marathon in his FiveFingers - looking for sub 3hrs!!
Good for him.
Has he been using them long? I've heard of quite a few people who have tried to run too far, too fast and too early. Ended up with bone fractures etc. I've been using mine for 6 months now and although I can run long distance off road, on road I can only run up to 10 miles.
Good luck to him though!
Will keep you posted... I think he's entered Berlin.
I just ran the Peris Half Horseshoe in a pair of Flows, with mixed results. Ive written an account of it here.
I think it's all about the new Vibram Five Finger Treks - mine are due to arrive in October...
I posted this on the Training thread but why not here as well.
The Leadville 100 in VFFs.

I completed 2 marathons in FiveFingers KSO....
I was dealing with IT Band syndrome while I was training for my 1st marathon and the only one I did shod... Since I transitioned to barefoot and minimalist solutions (VFF, huaraches, light racer flat) I got rid of ITBS.
I will never do a marathon with anything less minimalist than the lightest racer flat available ( Mizuno Wave Universe, Asics Piranha SP...). And for distances of half marathon or shorter I can go barefoot. I still have to see what I can do in mountains... :D
