What? There are other forums???
I know this is very late but I've a question.
I've been writing a function for my club website to calculate the FRA cat for a race based on distance and climb. It keeps reporting Holme Moss as a BL, not AL and when I look into it *is* working fine. 17 miles, 4000ft is only 235 feet / mile which means it's a B so why does the FRA class it as a AL on the info page when it's own numbers disagree? Am i missing something which would (hopefully) mean it is an AL?
Know what you are saying / mean - so they are LBs rather than BLs, most of the way to to AL's?!
Considering doing this and just woindering if there are any nav tips, is it as tough as it suggests on paper and finally is it a good route?
Yes a good hard route, faster more runnable I would say on the return but with a sting in the tail. worth reccing from where you cross the road(holme moss pylon) to Laddow. In fact this makes a nice loop as you return to here. I've unfinished buisness with this as the last time I started I ended up in hospital..
Reccied the "loop" (from the Holm Moss Mast to Laddow and back) for this one yesterday with my son and dog. Not done it before. Serious wind, rain and very cold. Very poor visibility (i.e. none) until the clouds lifted towards the end. Lost any hint of a path shortly after leaving the mast, but the N-S path on Tooleyshaw Moor was fairly easy to spot when we got back up the hill from Heyden Brook, even in the clag. From there the route down to Crowden is fairly easy to spot. Don't miss the right fork on Hey Moss just after the steep descent from Westend Moss.
There is a small track/trod back up to Bareholm Moss from Crowden, but we couldn't see any clear trod from there down to Crowden Great Brook or back up to the Pennine Way by Laddow: unless we missed one (quite possible) the quickest route would seem to be on a more westerly bearing than the one on the route map as it gets you up onto the Pennine Way faster, from where it is all runnable although technical in places.
Route from Black Hill back to the mast is easily missed (bearing needed initially) but easy to follow once found, although really, really boggy in places.
The many stream crossings were more like rivers after all the heavy rain and needed a bit of care, otherwise not really a problem.
I can see why it's classified as an AL - very, very tough going apart from the Pennine Way. Compass, map and good nav skills essential, especially in the fog.
Once you've gone through the checkpoint on Bareholme, the best line is to contour round just under the exposed peat, where there is a slight trod on a north-westerly bearing. Once you start turning northwards, it's time to drop down (steeply) to Crowden Great Brook. This way, you miss the rocky outcrop & it's a straight down & up to Laddow Rocks. If you choose the more westerly bearing from the checkpoint, you'll need to be on that line straight away or you'll hit the rocky outcrop. Going that way also adds a little bit of distance to the route as well.
If in doubt, I'm the tall, greying one in the amber Holmfirth vest!!
Don't forget, you can pre-enter the race for £5 (it's £6.50 on the day) and it would be great to have plenty there, as it's race organiser Russ Bangham's 25th & final event, so let's give him a good send-off.
Here's the link to the Harriers page with all the information - map, route description & entry forms etc

Hope to see plenty of you there.
