A barn owl on my way to work this morning. Fabulous birds.
Last night head torch run we (32 runners) stopped in a barn for a brief rest, roosting on a beam 2ft above our head was a beautiful kestrel looking some what startled so we left as quickly as we had arrived, stunning colours though.
On the bridlepath between Haken Lane and Hall Lane (between Lever Bridge and Moses Gate), a small deer playing peek-a-boo at me from round a tree. After a while it got brave and came out onto the path and took a few steps towards me, stared for a while, then trotted off into the trees on the other side of the path and up the embankemnt. I resumed my run and it ran parallel with me along the ridge for a moment before disappearing.

That is a superb pic Wharfee, where were they at?
Been working out at the top of Eldroth for the last few weeks, and have had a herd of sika deer (smaller but no less interesting) grazing the surrounding fields, the lawn of the property, and even jostling to peer in at the van window as I drove away at dusk, magic.
Terrific recent uploads wharfee. I can almost hear the widgeon and lapwings at Hellifield!
Barn Owl again on my way to work this morning. Cracking view of it sitting on a fencepost by the side of the road.
We had a chat about cameras a month or so back....

Owls. Love em. Went to Muncaster Castle a couple of years back and was amazed at how many different types of owls there are around the world. Don't like to see them in capativity really though but they are well looked after.
Brilliant photo wharfee as usual:thumbup:
A basic body and better lens is better than the other way round. Just buy the best gear you can afford. When you move into the DSLR's it becomes "the more you spend the better the gear". I don't believe there are shortcuts when it comes to quality cameras/lenses. Except for buying secondhand. Try this site... http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/
I saw a tawny owl on my way to Pateley Bridge the other day and a very sad sight tonight on the road to Masham from Nosterfield, a dead roe deer. Especially upsetting as I saw a very much alive roe deer leaping across the same road a few months ago and felt so happy to see it, poor thing...:o
not sure what it was, stoat/weasel pale grey brown but with a very black tip to the tail, ran across a track in front of me.
Little owl on fence post the other evening at about 7pm. It was quite happy to let me drive past it without flying away.
treecreeper having a right old climb up and down the hawthorne in the back garden,
seems to be a few more foxes than usual at the moment or is it the shortage of food thats making them braver?
Saw a stoat whizzing across the road on my way cross the moor to Pateley Bridge this morning. A flash of slinky russet and a waving black tipped tail. Wonderful.:D

Wow Wharfee, that's amazing.
We had a roe deer staring in the dining room doors this morning but I didn't get a picture. Buggers won't stop eating the lawn.
in the woods yesterday i saw a paw print.
the pad was the size of the palm of my hand?
seems too big to be a dog, even a mastiff.
its an under used path and section of land.
a couple of years ago i saw similar prints,
the same time there was a rumour of a big cat about.
i dont know,im sceptical.
but i know what i saw,
will take a camera next time to see if can get a pic.
any ideas?
A grey squirrel. Crossing the parapet of a bridge a mile or two North of junction 40 on the M1. He was heading East and was well over half way across the motorway

Dylan, dog-type prints nearly always leave claw marks, cat prints very rarely do - does that help? And like the other poster said, the print left behind is often way larger than the foot that made it...
Has anyone else noticed birds appearing in pairs again? 3 bullfinches at work, 2 dippers at Bolton Abbey, four plastic swans with no beaks (not sure what they're there for!)
Lovely sighting of a barn owl in wharfedale today (nr Buckden). Watched it fly around then followed it into a barn where we got a real close up, magic. Also 2 buzzards and dippers.
2 Snipes on yesterdays run, nearly trod on one as it was deep in the undergrowth sheltering from the snow.
A buzzard on the way home from the run yesterday, also a stoat/weasel diving back in to a snow hole, couldn't see any colour against the whiteness of the snow.
Much more exciting though whilst climbing bleaklow in a deep clough, as we approached a junction a grouse flying low and fast shot across about 10ft in front of us followed a split second later by an even faster Peregrine, we must have startled the Peregrine as it pulled out of the kill, although the size of the grouse would have been a big feed for a peregrine. never been as close to a peregrine in the wild, but it was all over so quick.
A hedgehog scuttling up my drive with the cat in hot pursuit (till it realised what it was chasing!) :D
3 (Three!!) red squirrels as I headed up Skiddaw. I spoke to one, but it didn't reply!!
a slow trot up Margery hill to take pictures of the DP race.
Nowty buggers them squirrels.
Local Noxy-Foxy on the heather-bank 100m across the cutting oppsite the house (through the window as the snow started this afternoon).
Haven't seen him for a while, he was clearly getting ready to bivvy-in overnight. Have just about forgiven him for raiding the chicken coop.
Obviously 'wasn't him/her' then.
Goosander, little grebe, ltt, heron, cormorant, grey wagtail, dipper, mallard, redwing and kestrel seen on today's run up the dale and back, plus two woodcock flushed while we were temporarily 'off-piste' in the woods :o
2 foxes and a tawny owl last night, oh and some sort of field mouse. Not bad for 5 mins walk from my house, wildlife spotting in snow is fun.
Lots of Hares and Leverets on the hills today! No snow here but they all had white coats on. Didn't see any boxing and they wouldn't wait for me to get the camera out!!
The boxing is fun to watch. I always thought it was males sparring, a couple of years ago i was put right. It's the females fighting the males off!!!
