Well that was easy
All in all not too bad
BUT
Young and Parker both give too much ball away.
Wellbeck MOM
good fight back but we shouldn't have been in that position
please please please get rid of Al Hansen, he talks crap, he's a scot, what does he know about football :w00t::p
I know he hasn't got a face for tv but Motty is the man.
We got bullied for an hour in the middle, Sweden were very physical. England can't retain or pass the ball consistently enough! I've become very pesimistic over England the last few years and my guess is Ukraine will run rings around us for large parts of the final game, it'll be 'exciting' and we might scrape a draw. It's what becomes of supporting Leeds I guess.....
Walcott should be playing instead of young after that performance tonight.
Young is one of our brightest players and when Rooney is back him and Welbeck with Walcott or the Ox out wide could be as potent as any attacking force in the competition.
When you score 3 you can't knock the offensive side of the team, you have to look at the back four, centre midfield and the goallie. I think even Hart is looking a little nervous and I'm not convinced on Terry and Lescott as a pair.
We have a lack of pace in the centre of midfield and that was exposed on a number of occasions with Parker in particular. I don't mind the guy, he's a good pro, but I wish we had Carrick in there as I don't think he's got it at this level.
I would like to try Jones or Henderson in there instead of Parker.
Welbeck's goal was class.
The rest? decent game in terms of action, comebacks etc but awful in terms of quality. Both sides playing headlessly at 100 miles an hour, ball given away every two minutes followed by a crashing tackle from one side or the other. Two 4-4-2s playing premier league football, basically perfect opponents for England. Spain are adifferent class.:)
Walcott offers very little for the team shape or defensiveness wise.. hence why Wenger doesn't trust him either..
I'm not sure you can play young and Walcott in the same team.. I think he'll stick with Milner and Young with Walcott as the impact sub..
Parker isn't international class..
I thought Parker played well.
Young was the disappointment for me.
Good win none the less! Another will do nicely :)
What about Rooney, do you think the youngster will get a game...:)
There may be a case of sticking with Welbeck & Carroll and then bringing Rooney on as a sub with 30 mins to go and ease him in gently to the tournament.
Rooney's got to start... best player in the squad. I thought Terry was very poor last night. I do rate him as a centre-back, but he needs a mobile partner and Lescott isn't quick enough... as a pair they're too short of pace and get exposed much too easily. For that reason I'd rather see Jagielka and Lescott together. Walcott's too unpredictable. Awesome last night, but I'd like to see him kept in that "impact" sub role. Wellbeck, Young and Rooney upfront could be awesome. I reckon Roy will keep Milner on the right. I rate Parker, he just needs to sit back and not push up too much as he can get caught out with his lack of pace. Young coming in from the left and Gerrard through the middle can support the strikers.
Impressed with Carrolls industry. If other midfielders played with the determination of Parker we would not have suffered as we did. Back four hopeless. I mean, leaking 2 set piece goals!!! Cole a good distraction that gave room on the right for Walcott when he finally came on. Agree, he is ideal as an impact player when defences are worn down. Welbeck....taking his chances well but will remain an understudy.
I don't really like football!!
No chance.. Rooney will come on pent up and do something stupid.. he just games.
Parker is typical english.. works hard.. tries hard.. looks like he puts a shift in.. too much running around like a headless chicken chasing down balls which shouldn't be chased down.. then being out of position..
Terry's legs have gone. But there is no talker in there, Rio is it for United, he's gone, Hart is too quiet, Terry isn't talking. That needs sorting, both goals, were awful. If we don't win the group Spain will rip us apart..
Young is hit and miss, he does dissapear in games. The problem is we have him and walcott and both do that. That's why Milner is there, to put a shift in..
I'm not overly happy, I think we were lucky yesterday and could have been on our way out..
Welbeck clearly meant it.
and tonight...my 2nd nation and hosts Poland to kick some Czech ass, Isc Polska, Lewandowski zwyciezca :)
I can't understand the people who get stuck in to Young.
He has been England's most consistent player FOR ENGLAND over the last 12 months and he actually had a decent game against France where we were starved of possession and he was playing in the Rooney position.
He wasn't at all the worst player on the pitch for us against Sweden. I felt that our central defenders were poor, I felt that Cole wasn't giving anything going forward which meant that Young was perhaps lacking a little support down the left.
Hang him for one below par game eh?
Just as we are going to get Rooney back - Rooney, Young, Welbeck and Valencia produced some breathtaking attacking football this year and the only thing that cost Man Utd the title in the end were defensive blunders and a few early season gaffs as the new keeper settled in.
They were fantastic going forward.
How many have said that by the time Rooney came back, we could be on our way home already? Well we aren't. We now have some match winners in Rooney, Young and Welbeck - perhaps even Gerrard might find some of his old sparkle.
So we have 3 out of 4 - and the Ox on the right and I think we can score against any team.
I am quietly confident that we might actually do well in this tournament, but the only way it will happen is if these key players do the business and our stoppers can start doing there job and not making the school boy errors that let Sweden bag 2 goals.
Burnley Fan :) - I have enjoyed the banter with Danbert and his buds though at times who think I'm a Man U fan.
I actually just like watching good football and I think Man U have got the balance of skill and physical presence right more than any of the PREM over the last few years.
I used to love watching Arsenal though in the early Wenger days with Bergkamp, Henry, Vierra, Petit, Overmars - cracking team.
I actually put pre-tournament that I would have liked the team to be made up of Man U and Man C players where possible as clearly they have been the 2 stand out PREM teams this year and there are question marks over the rest.
Hart
Richards, Ferdinand, Lescott, Cole
Johnston, Carrick, Scholes, Young
Rooney, Welbeck
It doesn't look so bad does it?
I'd accept Gerrard for Scholes of course as Scholes would most probably not have accepted a place if asked.
Thought England played well yesterday apart from the 10mins of madness where they let in 2 goals. The defence were organised most of the time and players worked well, then forgot what to do at the start of the second half. Sweden had very few efforts from close up apart from the goals and hardly threathened. Ibrahimovic may have been very skilful but his greed cost sweden.
Rooney back will bring more bite to our attack and I agree on walcott as an impact player (and I'm an arsenal fan). But to say that I am excited at the thought of the Ox on one side of the pitch, with walcott on the other, wilshire and arteta in the middle and somone to score up front (probably not RVP)
If we wanted a crosser of the ball we'd have beckham.. we have gerrard for his dynamism.. at the moment in both games we haven't dominated the midfield and haven't maintained possession, we did for Wellbecks goal but otherwise just scrappy play.
I think we'll get out of the group but think spain will run through terry, his legs have gone. He reminds me of Steve Bruce now, running through treacle when trying to sprint..
When does England ever dominate midfield against opponents of this standard? I'd be interested to know who you would have had instead of Gerrard against France that would have dominated midfield.
Of course Gerrard is not going to have quite the dynamism of old, he's 32! But I thought he did have make surging runs against Sweden. And Gerrard's game has always been more then that, it has always included the ability to play the killer pass/cross. So far it has led to two of England's four goals.
Agree with you about Terry, he's very worrying.
Against France.. no one.. we were never going to have possession.
I think we need Lampard, Wiltshire or Carrick in the team and those 3 are good at retaining possession. Lampard has added that to his game as he's aged. He's evolving well.
Parker runs hard, looks tired, but is found wanting too much. We didn't dominate against Sweden, which says a lot.
Wiltshire obviously wasn't an option due to long term injury, a shame because he has lots of potential.
Lampard has the same aging problem as Gerrard, is less flexible in terms of positions he can play and has consistently performed worse for England than Gerrard. But in any case injury ruled him out
Carrick - Was that a joke?
Agree with your comments on Parker. Could do with a younger midfield partner for Gerrard.
Carrick has been United's best player.. we got 89 points.. Henderson played poorly for Liverpool who barely broke 50 points..
He's good on the ball, retains possession, keeps his shape. He's been the mainstay of a hugely successful United team for 5 years, so he must have some ability.. he's fustrating, could be more imposing, but we need him as the other 2 are out..
Disagree re Lamps, I think he can now play deeper, better than Gerrard can. Liverpool were better statistically without SG than with...
Re options.. Cleverly is injured.. Wiltshire injured.. not sure who else there is. Barry is also getting on. Jones? I'm not sure anyone knows his best position. and at the moment he's too head strong..
You would know better how Carrick has played for Man Utd than me. But I've often heard critical comments from Man Utd fans about him. In my opinion there is no way he'd bring the attacking verve that Gerrard (even past his best) still provides. I agree that Henderson underperformed for Liverpool.
I wasn't too disappointed when I heard that Lampard was ruled out of the tournament. He's been given so many chances by England and rarely delivered even though he's always been given his preferred position and Gerrard has been shunted out wide.
Carrick is frustrating, but he's still a class footballer who finds his man a lot.
He's different to Gerrard, not quite an anchor man, more a quarter back, but provides something we don't have in the squad at the moment.
So what's the chances of Croatia - Spain game ending 2 - 2 tonight :D
Predictions for England score tonight?
Lucky goal, but we'll take it!
I was out running so didn't watch the game but it sounded like we gave Ukraine a good "defencing" and apparently the Ukraine disallowed goal was offside anyway?
Awful football to watch, we're going to do a Chelsea by the looks of things and fluke the whole tournament. We are 2004 Greece. :w00t:
Job done though and even if we do a Greece 2004 maybe it will put a bit of pride back in the side.
Rooney looked a bit rusty, hopefully that will have blown away a few cobwebs. I bet Parkers got a few bruises.
