Also even if you walk up the hill to Heptonstall, make sure you start running before you get to the pub in case there's anyone outside. Then once out of sight round the corner, start walking again, even if it is downhill....
Not forgetting flying out across the road in Hebden Bridge, stopping all traffic, before having to sit down once you get halfway up those steps.
# proper hobbling
Good to see you posting! There are other events to do
Hey up Stolly how`s it going?
bluddy ell looking a tad wet :o https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather...ate=2019-03-09
It doesn't look too bad. It could be a wet start but it'll soon be gone, then it'll just be spittin' with sun in between the drops. :)
Well it's been chucking it down here all afternoon and evening, and somehow seems to be getting worse. Went out for a steady 4 miles on the roads though. Had to run off the ridiculous amount of food I went through in the Fleece.
Challenging weather conditions. Must've spent the first 2:15 battling into the wind, and it wasn't until the Long Causeway that it was behind us.
Talking to BritNick at the start, I boldly stated that I was after 5:30 today. Up until Todmorden it was still looking vaguely feasible... but a nasty pain in my knee was starting to develop... By the time I got to Mankinholes it had taken hold and I was struggling to jog the flat section before the climb to Stoodley Pike. What followed was an agonising hour or so attempting to get to Heptonstall and a waiting car, so I could get to the finish and retire...
Spent some of the descent into Hebden Bridge walking backwards to ease the pain. The funny thing was, on the way up to Heptonstall I thought well there's only 7 miles to go, maybe I should just carry on. But common sense took over and I sadly dropped out at Heptonstall.
I'm the first to say when I've ballsed it up... but today was just bad luck I guess... perhaps the only thing I could have maybe done was opted for some food from the Mankinholes cp, rather than going straight for the liquid refreshment.
All I can do is take the positives... despite the tough conditions, was looking at a big pb before disaster struck...
Well done everyone who got round, there was some serious determination going on around me into the hailstones and wind...
I think we saw you at Heptonstall. Orange jacket, black cap? You were with a guy in a green jacket walking up the hill into Heptonstall. Unlucky but you will live to fight another day, eh.
Mr B I’ve sent you a message and a photo on Facebook messenger if you can access it!! :)
Yes that was me Fishbulb.... was taking an easy walk up with the mighty Steve Jones of DPFR.... ultra runner extraordinaire, did the Spine in January, and Dragons Back this year, not to mention the Spine again next year... top bloke...
Well done on getting round. Conditions were no better this morning. Pretty grim, sleet and snow, I bailed out and went to Leeds before heading back south...
Not got any better Travs; still wild, wet and winter up here
Great in the Lakes strong winds, heavy rain and snow showers:cool:
Funny story.
I'm with the raynet guy, we're on the radio trying to track down some missing numbers. The YHA is home to a large party of Hasidic Jews who are celebrating the Jewish Sabbath, an old Jewish man is walking around pensively in the car park. All of a sudden the hostel door bursts open and a conga line of Jewish teenagers careers out all singing in Hebrew. They encircle the old man who decides to cut his quiet time short and join in. They're all dancing around singing and it's impossible to hear what's going on on the radio, so we give up and try again later. They went for a walk up Stoodley Pike earlier in the day, all dressed in Oxfords and polyester slacks some with the tall black top hats.
Travs, good to see you at the start. I'm sorry to hear you had to bail out with a sore knee. You know I'm not surprised. You've been hammering the events with a vengeance in recent months. My knees always tell me when I'm doing too much.
mr brightside, great to see you again at Mankinholes then again at the finish. I'm sorry I missed out on a snifter this year (far too slow for that).
The conditions early on were hostile, to say the least. I was lucky to avoid a soaking while crossing Widdop Reservoir dam but I had to turn around and force my way backwards into the wind on the far side. After that, the driving hail made my legs burn through the waterproof trousers. After I'd finished many hours later, my quads still looked shot-blasted. The day turned out nice in the end, though. A strong finish (for me) with some overtaking after the last checkpoint was the icing on a very stale cake. :)
Well done Nick, good to see that you smashed your target time...
Funnily at the b&b in Haworth, there was another guest who was also racing... lo and behold, he was also from Coventry...
When he imparted that fact, it was amazing how quickly my mind went from having a polite conversation about the race, to thinking "right, i'm going to beat this guy out of sight...." !! i guess i'll always be a racer!
In a mirror-image of last year, when i suffered with a similar knee pain mid-way through the LM42 (although on that occasion limped through to finish), the pain has disappeared as quickly as it came. Hopefully like last year it won't return, and this is just a temporary setback in my long-distance plans for the year.
Results for anyone who hasn’t seen them. I’m determined to do this again in 2020

Its that time of year again..
So it is, and the weather forecast isn't looking quite as bad as it was last year.
Don't forget to take £5 for the car park (it seems to have gone up from last year).
It's actually been 3-4 years since I last did it.
I'm assuming that the Route hasn't changed?
Still the same route, Anthony. Big question is, will it still be going ahead or will it be the last-gasp ultra before the country shuts down? Perhaps Brett can confirm?
First 30 through Mankinholes:
196, 109, 237, 319, 55, 88, 223, 31, 43, 44, 257, 125, 129, 814, 74, 329, 12, 87, 90, 331, 70, 123, 122, 185, 231, 819, 127, 183, 178, 820.
benshep with a stunning time, clearing 5 hours with ease!
You def. looked OK at the finish :)
I was well chuffed to see plenty of whisky left at Mankinholes this year so I indulged myself by way of a mini snifter. Eating a doughnut to soak it up tasted magic. Thanks again to mr Brightside for the liquid refreshment. Top bloke. Sadly it did nothing to speed my ascent to Stoodley Pike.
Hi. Lots of fun and participation in the Hobble in the past on here. I was trying to find when Luke started the whisky. 2011.
Luke - there is a clip of your whisky station and how it’s developed at 4:49. It was a whole gallery of whiskys with tasting notes.

There was some talk about the Hobble on the Discord.
I too remember seeing MrB at the whisky cp a couple of times in the mid 2010's, but we didn't know each other back then.
