When I think back years ago to how many miles a week in winter I would clock up its unreal
But I do really find it hard to fit both running and cycling in .
Time is the bloody problem with the roadbike.

I too need a kick up the butt to get me out on the bike.:o
May be in the Christmas Hols.
Ernie (forum dog) and myself have been out jogging in the woods every day since he arrived.
Knees are starting getting used to the training so hopefully the bike will be next:)
Went on the Velodrome tonight for the first time - what a buzz. Can't wait to go back. A bit strange not to get rained on though.
An early and dark start for a brisk 50 miles round the Ribble valley with 2 other riders. All was going well until a few miles past Chipping as me and speedy Stan were on the front pushing hard and just as we came out of a shallow left hander - wallop, bang, slide, ouch mi fingers (again!!). At a more cautious pace just 1 mile up the road down went Stan on a straight section - pesky black ice. I am currently wondering whether to go to A&E (or the shed) to cut my ring off as my finger looks like a plump sausage being squeezed by a band of gold at the base...............
Follow up to above:
After a few hours my ring finger had swelled up like an unpricked sausage under the grill and had turned a colour somewhere between purple and black. Not good I thought so tossed up between the tool shed and Accy Vic and ended up seeing a nice man with a technical saw in A&E followed by a lovely women in the X-Ray bit. All very efficiently completed in 40 minutes with nothing broken apart from the wedding ring (freedom!!!!).
Point of note - Conti Gator skins are neither thorn proof or grippy.
oh eck ady, not good mate
Right after getting inspiation from Vincent Densons book:D
I set off and got to Grantham and back today, very fast but I was exhausted and had to stop off at Evans cycles in Nottingham for a Cliff Bar , I think about 60miles in all but with that wid I was struggling. But it always takes me 4 /5 rides to get back into it.
Probably and 18 average I suppose.
Loads of bikes being sold in Evans I noticed.
Will the people buy them actually ride them. Not in this weather i doubt.
Very cold today.
Just been watching an old Paris-Roubaix DVD. I really shouldnt as it starts to get my cycling legs twitching.
It inspired me so much ive just cleaned my Rourkie.:)
Oh Ady sounds bad!
Ooops. Yeah i'll wait to test out the new bike on a nice sunny day that is dry! Wouldn't want to fall off it and scratch it!
Not sure how ive managed it but after a couple of thousand miles I have not got one scratch on my rourke
Maybe its the quality of the paint job ?
I keep it in the house and never lean it on the frame
anyone who leans a bike on its frame should be shot
Well, it's only for a couple of miles each way, but I got round to it.
I dragged 'Jordan' out of the shed. She's a knackered old bike and been hacked about that much there's not much of the original left. But what you can't avoid noticing are a pair of SMART headlights....
Enjoyable, if uneventful ride in. Ride back was interrupted as I emerged from a side road, dead end for motorised transport, past a V posh hotel.
Me in my work clothes, black hoodie (hood up), combats and my buff over my nose.... at 1:00 in the morning
This was timed perfectly with Mr Plod driving past on his way for a cuppa....:D
Anyone got some welding gear spare - think I might knock one of these up after lunch??

Another ride, another incident. Only 4 of us set off from Whalley this morning on the same 32 mile route round to The Priory at Scoton. I stayed at the front for the duration and at times worked hard, getting to the cafe seconds before a heavy snow shower. Other riders from our club turned up in dribs and drabs and around 12 had lunch. 2 of us decided to take the longer return leg through the Trough of Bowland so off we set up the road quite briskly - for 2 miles anyway. On a slight incline I was out of the saddle and then the freewheel locked, jamming up the back wheel and bending the rear mech and hanger in the process. I managed not to fall off but it was ride over for me. I freewheeld/got pushed back to Scorton just in time to catch one of the lads that came in his car and scrounged a lift home. The joys of winter riding!
Had a fantastic 38 mile solo ride through the Peak District yesterday on snow and ice, managed to stay upright but think I left my fingernails somewhere along the way :)
Popped into Rouke's today and had a look at an 853 winter frame. Okay so I caved in and booked a measure up for one in Jan:o.
Not told her indoooooooors yet
Going to have a slightly diff frame for longer rides , prob a tad shorter on the top tube or the bars a touch higher just to give me a more upright ride.
More Audax if you like but DEF NO MUDGUARDY THINGS:eek:
First thing Brian said to me was how many times you battled in the wind with those deep rimmed Cosmics that I told you not to have.
Err lots I replied.
No Xmas club ride out today due to blizzard conditions. Even the drive up to the cafe for our turkey lunch was considered too dodgy. At least I won't fall off today then!
16 miles on the mountain bike in very snowy conditions, brilliant. Especially seeing all the traffic floundering at the on the way home.
Hi Daz, First of all well done for your result on Tanky's. I noticed you mentioned doing the Audax rides, a friend of mine set up the Audax movement. Unfortunately he was murdered in Africa whilst riding to stop with friends in the 80s. I don't know how much you have done but I do know there is quite a strict protocol one being mudguardy things, PLUS the rear mudguardy things have to have an extension (usually part of a washing up liquid bottle - doesn't have to be fairy liquid). As they are not so much races but a fast paced attack on distance you can imagine a good group not wanting shite sprayed in their faces for 200/300/400 or even 600k. A group I used to go out with would sit anyone who was sans mudguardy things at the back all day.
Anyway enough lecturing, I fancy taking part in next years 'North West Passage 200k' from Rochdale. The first Audax I did ended up with a guy in thick wooly socks and jumper and a very grey Carradice saddle bag pushing me back to the group when I got dropped (needless to say I hadn't judged him properly). If you fancy a ride sometime let me know but I'm afraid the mudguard thing has stuck and come summer the race bike flies.
;)
Still commuting to and from work on the cyclo crosser. Mud guards are good.
Sportives are the new Audax's apparantly
Mmmmmmm think some of the stalwarts wouldn't agree, I think some of the Sportives are a money making racket. There are enough proper races ;)
Can't imagine some of the people I know doing sportives partaking in the Paris/Brest!!!!!!!
Goodwill to all men....EXCEPT when you pull up to some red lights and sit wide cos of some ice and the motorist behind threatens to F****** run you over for taking up the road. I tried to explain it was because of the ice.....then asked if he could EVEN SPELL ICE!!!!!!
Makes you wonder if they read the highway code before taking their test, never mind since....
I think he couldn't read!!!! :p Anyway got to get it out of my head. Have a good one, I'm settling down with a 18 year old Highland Park :D
25 miles this morning
very very icy and dodgy really. I returned home and did a 9 mile run with the dog
This weather isnt helping really but should be okay after today.
78 miles with 12 others on the festive Ribblehead ride out. Made it harder for myself by riding the CX bike with 35mm trail tyres seeing as the winter bike is in bits with mechanical issues and the summer bike is tucked away. A few dig deep sections but managed to keep with the group whilst some dropped off the back due to too much Christmas pudding. Still plenty of snow up there and quite a bit colder than Accy. A bite to eat at Inglesport cafe followed by a brisk ride back - especially the Settle to Paythorne section. Around 17 average so not a bad work out.
A ride to Buxton but the long long way home
A 123mile epic and just managed to catch the young lady at the burger van on the A6 for a sandwich.
After reaching the Pavillion Gardens in Buxton I was very cold. Ady your right, certainly a dig deep day.
I set off back down the A6 and thought about heading to the cafe in Tideswell but after nearly bonking on the hill I decided to push on home. A shot block bar saw me back to Bakewell and then the hunger knock really kicked in. I literally freewheeled up to the Burger Van at Whatstandwell in the layby.
She said " Tea Mr you look dreadfull".
I replied give me a tea with three sugars and a bacon sandwich. The last two pieces of bacon duly was savaged in ten seconds flat:o.
I then set off with vigour. Went through Derby, out to East Mids Airport then across to Gotham and around Nottingham and home.
I wouldnt have made it without an inspirational phone call at about 60miles.
Oh and isnt it just great when your 16 yr old son has run all the hot water off when you arrive home piss wet through.
A quick half hour with the immersion on and then lay in the bath for an hour:).
Bianchi now lovingly placed in the shed ( thrown)
About same speed Ady , God it was cold
Good effort Daz, makes a change not to come off this weather :)
