I could only thing is i'd have to bring my dog with me as no-one would be at home & i wont leave him on his own :)

NO way Daz, the gel covers don't work. the only solution is a proper decent saddle, which molds itself to your body. I have had a gel saddle (relegated to the winter bike) and it's absolutely rubbish, the minimalist one I have now is far more comfortable.
