Just back home, mug of tea in hand, and car unpacked - looking at the mound of stuff in the hallway to sort out and clean. What a great day, and what great company on the fells - all three of us had fantastic support throughout, and afterwards at the Kings Head. It's been said a few times on these forums that the BG is about having a great day out with your mates, and for me at least I couldn't have done it without the help of lots of friends all helping at different stages.
Andy and Rick were flying. I tried hard to keep up, but I had to let them go at Thunacar Knott, and steadied my pace first down to a dawdle, and then to a complete stop after Pike o' Stickle, dropping from 32 mins ahead of schedule at High Raise to 11 mins behind at Bowfell. I was feeling bad most of legs 3 and 4, but not getting any worse, and once I got to Honister only 14 mins down on schedule I dug deep to claw back some time. By Newlands I thought that a final big effort could get me in a few minutes under the 24 hours.
So much more to tell - I hope to spend the bank holiday writing it up.
Sounds like you had to really dig in. Well done.
Very well done to all three, especiallly Mark on the 50 -apart from Scoat Fell what were the extras?
I started 20 mins before Rick and Andy to do Lonscale Fell and Skiddaw Little Man, so that we could join up at Skiddaw summit; then I did the standard 42 peaks, and finished off with Whiteless Pike, Wandope, Eel Crag, Sail, Scar Crags and Causey Pike. I was being tempted by my navigators to pick up other extras along the way, with less of a detour than the final six, but I was being stubborn and stuck to the plan.
Even better, fantastic! I think you are the first person to do that particular 50 for many years - since Paul Murray in 1993 in fact. There has been a tendency in recent years to do the peaks closer to the '42', which is what I largely did in 2008. Very well done! I take it you didnt count Scoat Fell then? This would also be first, although you may as well count it anyway as everybody does - and say you did 51@50.
Well done!
I agree with Geoff - it looks like you're the first to omit Scoat Fell - http://bobwightman.co.uk/run/bgr_extended_rounds.php - I've always felt that an extended round should be just that and the Causey Pike/Grassmoor group is the logical extension to do this as it only adds about 2 or 3 miles but quite a bit extra ascent.
I'll update the above page tonight.
I was navigating for Mark on Leg 4 in the clag on Saturday and I put my hands up to trying to tempt him with Scoat Fell, Black Crag, Looking Steads etc, he resolutely refused.
Despite leaving Wasdale 20+ minutes behind schedule he was adamant that he wanted to take in the Whiteless -> Causey Pike group, Respect Bro' !
It was a tremendous effort by Mark to recover that time over leg 4, a very extended Leg 5 and then finish sub-24 in good style.
Stef and I met a lad who had supported Mark's 50 at 50 last Friday afternoon while on a leg 4 BG recce. He said he was 'the Peak' and was having a run round the Ennerdale route. We were chatting to a pair of walkers about the BG and he joined in the conversation. Nice chatty lad with sunglasses and dark hair. Is he on the forum? If so t' was good to meet you :)
