Jane Tomlinson's Leeds 10K

6 and a bit miles and oooh... 200 ft of climb

This was probably my first competitive race since Borrowdale last August (in which I was far from 'competitive' truth be told), my first road race for at least 3 years, only my second ever 10K (I did the Skipton 10K in 2003 I think, the one with the scenic route that goes down the by-pass and past the sewage works :D) and my first ever 'big city centre extravaganza' with getting on for 7,000 starters (although I think they were hoping for 11,000). I was running with work as part of a corporate team which meant that I was also running in a purple tee shirt that seemed to be made of inch thick hemp and weighed a ton. We may have even won the corporate race where the results of the first four home count - fortunately for me 3 others in my team could run properly (a 39:12, a 39:22 and a 40:00 dead to add to my 'fast jogger's' time of 43:51).

Anyway despite my misgivings and a slow start, where I was wedged in for a while by a mass of fun runners, and some over heating issues with my superheated tee shirt, I managed to run at a fairish pace for me and I was pretty pleased with my time. I'm definitely not race fit for sure as I felt pretty damn uncomfortable and leggy all the way round. That said, despite her very best efforts and top notch head wobbling, I managed to leave Paula Radcliffe for toast; she gave her all but just couldn't live with my pace ;). A great win to notch up don't you think..... even though she was running 7 months pregnant. Never the less a win is a win is a win.

I of course didn't read all of the pre-race blurb and didn't know anything about water stops etc. I missed/didn't need the first water stop after 3K :rolleyes: but just after the turn at about the 6K mark I was sweating cobbs and did grab (what I thought to be) a water at the next stop to splash over my head. Its wasn't water though but was gatorade so cue one sticky up hair do at the finish.

A grand race though and one where the standard of running was 'so high' that on my chipped time I came 166th out of 6,748 starters

Wow Stolly this sure is a change from your usual! I wondered what possessed you, but all in the name of charity. That's a great time you got and fancy being able to say you beat Paula! :cool:

stolly, i know ive seen it somewhere in thread, and ive done it once with pilgrim et al, but the route that starts from ingleton and follows fellsman route but heads back down into ingleton, how far roughly, planning on doing something next week, also do you know how far; 3 peaks route through to the road section after nether lodge, but rather than head for whernside, taking a left up the track in front of the houses next to the railway, path takes you park fell then simon fell then ingle b, have you done this and if so how far?? cheers, Dave

Egor the first one is getting on for 15 miles and takes me plus or minus 3 hours; for some reason it seems to be a bit quicker if I go up Whernside ridgeline first but its actually more enjoyable to run up Inglebrough first because its a shambolic boulder field to run down. The other route is maybe 17 or 17.5 miles and I can't remember my time, although I'd guess 3.5 hours or so. Need to do this one again I think. And I like doing Ingleborough first as the descent from Park Fell is a humdinger. Click here for the route

Good, super fast, mainly grassy and very steep.... so guess its a bugger as well

A lovely run out with Harry tonight and, for the first time ever, I ran all the way up the side of Plover Hill including the stepped bit......... And I breezed it!

Or maybe its just the pond just above Hull Pot as Brotherton Lad said :). My line of descent actually runs right past it in fact and the fourth picture was probably taken not far from it, looking back at the fantastically fast grassy route down.

It's not the pond. It's about an inch down from the bit of fence on the track and where two sheep are.

Ah, see what you mean, very faint vertical lenticular shape. It'll be a slight flaw or smudge on the lens catching the sun immediately above it.

Not on that track there isn't egor but if you drop down to your right just after the summit heading in the direction of hill inn or simon/park fell there is; its a bit mucky at the top but is really nice and drinkable as it starts to go through the mossy rocks a little way down. It has been totally dry recently but this week's rain will have put that right I'm sure.

cheers, thought i remembered a marshal at top of the stair climb on ingle b saying something about a spring near by when i ran 3 p's this year

Whernside and Blea Moor Trig from Ribblehead

10 or 11 miles and about 2,300 ft

Ribblehead by the food van --> 3 peaks fell race route straight up the side of Whernside --> Whernside trig --> reverse of Whernside fell race route north along the ridge, past Whernside Tarns and down to the Craven Way track --> fellsman route along the track to the wrecked barn and then totally off piste down and up to the trig on Blea Moor --> finally a completely trackless line from there back to Ribblehead :)

Helvellyn from Glenridding

Maybe 8 miles and 2,800 ft

And like virtually every other bleeding time I've gone up Helvellyn it included the usual full on pissing rain and stupidly strong winds on the tops. Still it was a great run out with my intrepid my sidekick Harry in tow. To tell you the truth we didn't run a great deal going up - Striding Edge with a bonkers dog in the team requires at least one of us to be sensible - and he didn't run or walk the first bit of the descent down onto Swirrel Edge at all, digging his doggy heels in and letting me instead carry him fireman style.... while walking down steep rain slick rocks in my now gripless fell shoes! Anyway apart from getting truly soaked to the skin, we both survived to tell the tale.

Sure weren't many people about; we passed two at the hole in the wall just before Striding Edge, met two wind blown walkers by the wind shelter on top (who were amazed by mine and Harry's minimalist attire) and a couple more asking for directions up Swirrel Edge (I kind of told them to follow the track until it disappears and then scramble up the rocks, veering a bit to the right and then a bit to the left when they near the top). One day I'll go up there on a clear sunny day I'm sure!

Leeds 10K weekend before last

In a moment of stupidity I ended up ordering a £29.99 download of pictures taken by Marathon Photos following the Leeds 10K race. Given that I'll probably never view the pictures ever again I thought the least I could do is share one of them with you all! Enjoy :D

Stef those 'road shoes' ;), after maybe a 3 year life span are now completely and utterly knackered with no cushioning at all left in them and no grip to speak of either. They will shortly be reassigned to become my beach/fannying about in rivers shoes (until they eventually fall apart) and replaced by maybe some new 'road shoes'. Anybody have any views on Walsh Spirit Peaks?

And Ady there were 26 pictures of me taken at the race, quite a few of them in what must of been a back to back single burst. On the web site, pre purchase, you can only view them in thumbnail size and they sort of looked worth getting. The reality once I got them was of course that I'd been a complete prat.

Thanks for the legs compliment Freckle - boss eyed, broken nose, big ears, wonky mouth and Wayne Rooneyesque high forehead notwithstanding, I will for ever hold dear the fact that you consider my legs handsome ;)

5 months and like most border collies he is manic and borderline out of control most of the time... when he's not sleeping that is. He went for a romp with my daughter tonight, threw himself in a swamp near the end of their walk and got plastered, came back home and rampaged around the kitchen before seeing the farmer feeding the sheep with biccies in the back field and vaulting the wall to go and play with him. He then wanted to play rugby and with his new but already battered tennis ball until he more or less collapsed and zonked out for the night. Old Cote Moor Top/Firth Fell and Buckden Pike from Kettlewell

A marvellous run in the clag and rain with Harry this morning. Mind you it was slightly ruined by some mega dog induced frustrations when I needed to capture the 'flipping' animal to carry him up one or two rocky climbs and over one or two stiles, only for him to choose to play silly buggers and run rings around me as I tried to grab hold of him. The hills echoed to "CURSE YOU (or similar) HARRY POTTER" at one stage after I'd been trying to get hold of him for the better part of 10 minutes and and had tears of frustration welling up in my eyes!

The waterfalls on the track up Buckden Pike were back up to speed after the long dry spell... as were the bogs on top.

It's got more 'up & down' that you'd actually think, with all the sand-bars that reform with every tide.

I ran the 'Cross-Bay Challenge' last year, & I'd reckon that some of the smaller channels (not the big ones, like the Kent, or Keer) were approaching 10 foot deep.


Okay, I know it's not a huge variation, but not what you'd expect to find on what is basically a beach - if a very big, scary, one!
