Yeah a good time for a 56 mile route, but it irritates me that it is displayed as a "record bullock smithy time" which I doubt it was. Glad I took part, it has re ignited a desire to get some miles done.

Why the irritation and doubt, John? The BSH website says it's a record for the new route (since 2000) and Steve Temple's comprehensive results service proves it too. There have only been three sub-9-hour finishes: James Scott-Buccleuch in 2011 with 8:46, Andy Trigg in 2001 with 8:55 and Andy Pead in 2007 with 8:59. The new route is longer and a little tougher than the old route, and more than 56 miles even in its most optimised form.
I would certainly agree with longer - those last 1.5miles took some doing!
Great event really enjoyed it! - thanks to all the marshalls, some of those check points must require manning for 24 hrs!
My observations on the day in comparison to the rules set by the organiser, I hope im wrong and if so I sincerley apologise. If im right the only person the runner is fooling is himself/herself by thinking a record time has been achieved.
Great event!! Wanted to do it for years!! Having researched bits of family tree my 'ancestors', on my mum's side, are from Rainow/Kerridge/Bollington and I thought it was a good way to visit! However, it was dark when I got there!! Finished in 15.23, pretty pleased with that too despite my initial aims! If any one here knows James Fairfield (East Cheshire) thank him once again for his assistance with navigation most of the second half!! :)
AndyH - are you still out there!? - where's your report...? :)
Yes, come on Andy, I can see you ;-) We're desperate for your story.
Hi John,
As I wasn't there at the finish I'm not qualified to comment any further. You have made me curious though.
Ha, it certainly felt that way Daz:)
Have to say that that was the least enjoyable race I've done EVER, what a grind, I'll elaborate in a bit.
Good to meet you again Nick.
Glad to see it wasn't just me running the extra distance then! I had this as over 57miles.
I was surprised at the number of people who had managed to squeeze all of the extensive kit requirements in to a bumbag... glad I had the rucksack as I really needed the extra food and constant liquid towards the end.
The event itself was excellent, marshalls, check points, the breakfast at the end etc, all was great:)
I had a problem with my knee at ten miles, not sure what/how it happened? anyhow it didn't go away and got worse and no amount of ibuprofen and co codamol made any difference, the sensible thing should have been to pull out, but not being the most sensible at times and really wanting to finish it, (a bit too much for my own good) I ground on for the remainder, met up with a great couple that I'd previously met at the Eskdale Skelter, James and Elaine, hope your knee is ok Elaine and sorry for complaining so much, I got so lost after the last check point, eventually limped back in after being out for too many extra unnecessary hours/miles, cold/wet/sick and really depressed, so over 18 hours and too many extra miles on the 56.
So the question I've been asking myself apart from the fact that this is supposed to be fun:) is will I be back next year??????? (if my knee recovers) then absolutely!!!!:)
Andy.
Ouch - sounds nasty Andy. Hope you recover soon. Presumably when you go back next year you'll knock hours off your time from this year! I said after the first year that I wouldn't go back because of the disturbed night effect - this year was my third! Still managed to do a slight detour in the bit after Walker Barn. Think the recce next time will have to be in the dark!
Well done Andy for toughing it out to the end. That's mental strength for you! I hope you didn't do your knee too much damage in the process and you were able to sleep off the drugs afterwards. One thing is almost certain, you have a massive PB waiting for you upon your return. socks is probably right - it'll be hours. If I don't get into the UTMB next year I'll see you at BSH 2012 (come to think of it I'll probably see you at the start regardless).
Thanks Nick, yep I can knock hours off if I have another go, hope the knee settles down this week? then I'll have been quite lucky.
Andy
AndyH - sounds nasty, but Well Done on completing
also well done on getting lost after the last checkpoint - that's quite impressive - normally it's getting through Bollington between Walker Barn and Whiteley Green that causes most probs
I'll be back next year, and hoping for at least sub-14, and maybe sub-13 with a following wind!
Hi Andy!!!
I''m the other guy you were with at the end!!!! :) Good effort, very impressied with you're one-legged race hobble!!....and your pole-hoying!! :) If you see that James again thank him for me, as I wouldn't of managed to get round in the dark without any recce if it wasnt for him! Pity you got lost mind! Not sure I'll be doing it again sans recce....so we'll see if I can get any done over the next 12 months. unfortunately for me there's other runs and not enough weekends!
I though a while before making this post...should I or shouldn’t I…here we go…!
I thought I would rejoin the BS thread after this evenings get together of GVS at the local to celebrate our runners achievements in the race. As a club we’ve been successful in the event over recent years with wins by Andy Pead, Julian Brown and Jo Miles (latter two second claim).
Encouraged by the achievement and enthusiasm for the race by the above, numerous other GVS members have taken part in the event over the last 2 years. I’ve lost count of the number of club recces and get togethers that have taken place within the club to improve and help runners with their Bullock Smithy goals. At the centre of much of this has been Philomena Smith, a tireless work horse for GVS who brings the best out of club members. Those not a member of GVS will know Philomena best as the organiser of the Whaley Waltz Fell race.
In 2010 Phil completed the course in 12:05, a fantastic time and one well deserved following the amount and time and effort put in. This gave her third lady overall and her highest finish in a race! Being so close to a sub 12:00 she returned this year to try and break the barrier. At about half way she was a bit behind schedule, but then lost more time by helping and runner who had fallen and broken her jaw. She resigned herself to the fact that a sub 12:00 was not achievable.
Undeterred she carried on and had a storming final section from Walker Barn to complete the course in 12.23. What was more surprising to her was being told she had won the ladies race; a great achievement and one to be proud of.
…or at least that what she thought…and this is the purpose of my post. At the award ceremony, and after receiving her trophy, Phil went to congratulate the overall winners of the race. James (the winner) congratulated Phil, but another was frankly disgraceful with his attitude and comments when he told Philomena that she didn’t deserve the win, her time wasn’t worthy of a winner and if their usual lady runner wasn’t injured she wouldn’t have had a hope of a win.
In all my years running I have never come across this kind of attitude or outburst, whether on the road, fell or otherwise. I for one Phil am very proud of your achievement, as are many other runners…GVS or otherwise…Please don’t let this put you off. Roll on 2012?
Very well done Philomena , on an excellent race and winhttp://www.realbuzz.com/static/js/ti...miley-cool.gif and obviously to everyone else too .
Andy.
A great time and well done indeed Phil. Shame I wasn't there this year, but maybe next.
Simon
Can I please put the record straight before I'm hung drawn and quartered,
I did congratulate Philomena on her win(she failed to mention that to you)
All I said was"It's a pity Sally(course record holder)or Sarah didn't run otherwise we'd of had a clean sweep of the positions", that's it, that's all I said
There was no mention of her being not a worthy winner, like some of you said on here you can only beat what's put infront of you.
I have sent her an apology on the GVS site and I will personally, when I see her.
But aren't people quick to judge, maybe you should all look at yourselves before you jump in feet first
Enjoy your running
I've spoken to Jonah8 tonight and we both agree that things have been said that shouldn't have been said on both sides. Given the nature of the event and the fact that runners had been on their feet for several hours, things can easily said or misinterpreted due to simple tiredness. I’ve apologised to Jonah8 for any of my comments which may not have been accurate and he in turn has spoken to Philomena.
He also told me about his disappointment about the posts on this thread regarding the time of the winner and nature in which it was achieved. All of which he thinks has been misrepresented and detracted from a magnificent individual and team Stockport Harriers performance.
Lets all move on and do what we do best...insanely take part in these long distance events like the Bullock Smithy!
Don't you just love a happy ending?
Well done all, a few words mainly of my own run at the blog below. Does anyone know who was taking photos on the side of the moor just after the Moorside Hotel?
I think it was the husband of a GVS runner - were they on the left hand side after the gate? Stuart was also taking pictures before the road crossing to the Moorside. Im sure he'll put them up on the GVS website soon.
sorry i have taken so long to reply on here, just like my poor skills at navigation, using a compass map reading and spelling , so are my computer skills and sorting out forgotten passwords again and again.
Things were said that i was probably sensitive to, and he genuinley did not mean to upset me.
Mark mistakenly interprated how i felt into what he thought was said.
Jonha8 and I have had a chat last night we are all sorted and planning a GVS and Stockport social run together one sunday.
once again well done to all who finished, exerlent times by Stockport, i know how mch hard work goes into preparing for this event.
For me, originally my plan was to beat 12hrs 4min by just 5mins to get a sub 12 hr. By Millars Dale I realised this was not going to happen, so then continued on my run to finish around 12hrs 30. I dont know what came over me at about mile 44, I had heard that Paul was only five mins ahead so went allout to catch him, with 5 miles to go i passed him and the two ladies, no way did i ever think that i would get first place. It was very hard on middlewood way mentally and physically. but i finished in one piece 20 mins slower than i wanted, but with an orniment that needs polishing weekly.
Also it was not me that ran up the field across the road at peeperday, i followed the correct route to Edake cross, 100%.
so will i come back next year? we,ll see.
About time and I thought you said never again!!
You fail to mentioned how you dumped me at 44 miles after many splendid hours of running together ;) and yes unless you had double I believe you ran with me to edale cross up the path whilst stuffing our faces with a club biscuit.
Alls well that ends well :)
As a first timer in the BS, I just wanted to say thank you to any of the organisers and volunteers who may be reading this forum. It was an excellent event and well done to the winners. I thoroughly enjoyed my run, however, will admit to repeatedly asking my running companion "how many more miles?" by the time we hit the Middlewood way!! Overall a great day out :-)
phil - Many Congratulations http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...rty_smiley.gif and I know you'll be back next year to clock sub-12 http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...ink_smiley.gif
lantern - there's a few of us already organising a sub-13 group for next year - shall we count you in for recces/training runs? http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/...ile_smiley.gif
I'm so glad it's all sorted.
Well done to James with your record-breaking performance, and well done to Philomena for your win. Have you got some Brasso in stock? I can let you have some but I think the tin's rusted.
I've just posted my 'Start' pictures (no running it for me this year).
i dont have Brasso, i thought spit and polish would do it.
I had a chat with the organisers this year re: the team prize and why they dont have a ladies team prize.
It would have been Macc Ladies this year. The only reason they came up as not having a ladies team was there was no room on the board. However they are stating a new board this year and i thought they could look at it. I am sure i mentioned it to them last year as well....
If enough people email them or Club secretaries write to them, maybe we could have a new catagorie.. I do think it is worth while?

I Googled for Bullock Smithy Results and this Fell Runner Forum Site popped up. Had to register before I could comment and then wait?
James and I are absolutely impressed at how well you both did on your first Bullock Smithy outing and first time at that distance! Well Done! You are both capable of placing well and nailing a far faster time, especially if you have chance to reccy the route. Quite often me and James run seperately and meet at the finish, but I wanted James with me and to watch over me this year. He will be solo on his next Bullock Smithy Outing and having it! We will, no doubt reccy the route for 2012. James knows it back to front, but there are bits I'm still not confident with. If you are interested, give us a shout or if anyone alse on here does any reccys and don't mind if I tag along let me know? Andy, I have never met anyone so determined and with such complete strength of will, despite being in such absolute agony! Plus anyone who is so adept with a stick! Such high lights as putting said stick skills to good use against that bush! Will asume you were speaking in foreign tongues or perhaps some tribal incantation?? Sorry we had to push on at Whitely Green, but I was in a great deal of pain with my knee and could feel myself crashing! Felt really sad about the torturous hours you faced after! Did you stay on the Middlewood Way and end up at the old railway station or come off sooner at the Car Park? Anyway, we were both glad to have met you both.
Also, well done to Philomena and James and everyome who completed or were brave enough to give it a go. It's a great, friendly, well organised event.
'Ow do! Plod!!! :) I've now said it several times, but its worth saying again!! James was a star for me, I'd of not done it in 15.30ish without his superb recceing! It was great running around with you both and Andy...and the various other folk I ran with. I'd like to do it again but not without a recce or two...I'd prefer to be at least a little more self-sufficient in terms of knowing the course. It was, genuinely, a pleasure I never thought of the distance once the whole way around weirdly! I'm pretty sure everyone in that group could go sub 14 no problem! Cheers again!! See you next time! :)
Hi Elaine (plod queen).
Hope your knee is on the mend and James is well also, I also agree that James did a super job for sure:thumbup:, sorry for going on a bit (more like a lot probably:o), ha, sorry I didn't think anyone was about when I temporarily lost it, but those bushes have to know who's the boss eh, thanks to you both again, I would probably have chucked it in if I hadn't been with you all, one of the highlights was a stop to get ice cream and drinks:thumbup:, yay that was cool and something I've not done at an event before, I'll be on for some recce's in the future and I agree, we can all chop a lot of time off next time, great event.
Andy.:)
Hi,
Will post on here as and when we do reccies. No doubt we will see you on an event before then. Hope your knee is recovering? My knee and right leg haven't been great! Got High Peak 40 and Boggart Chase 10k this weekend which I've really been looking forward to, so have only done three 6 mile runs since Bullock Smithy, backing off each time as soon as I feel the slightest twinge or pain! We'll see?!
Full results are now available at...

Thanks to Andrew Whitehead for compiling these.
Cheers, Steve
Hi all, as my attempt at the Fellsman may not now happen in 2012 due to a clash of dates, I'm looking at the Bullock as my long jog/walk for the year.
Could anyone tell me how it compares with the Fellsman in terms of terrain, and general stuff like navigation, general fitness required, ascent, and so on? Ta.
