Agreed with that, did many recce's over both and found SM then HR slightly quicker and easier in crap conditions.
We once set off to S Man the same time as others going H Raise and when our paths crossed between the two I thought they were ahead of us, but we got to T Knott 6 or 7 minutes quicker as the run off H Raise is much faster too (IMHO)

after going both ways i have to agree mark sargent man although it is longer this way i also did leg 3,4 ,week before you but i went seathwaite it was heavy goingthen also with yewbarrow the only one not covered in snow

Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
yep great day out with Will yesterday (if a bit nippy on High Raise) - bet we were the only people to have a picnic on Thunacar Knott that day!
I still think the approach to Sergeant Man first in poor vis is a nightmare - it's a lot easier to hit it on a bearing (and there's a good trod most of the way) from High Raise
however, you then have to find your way from SM to TK which is more difficult than HR to TK, so probably not much in it overall

Thats true. I think we should have followed the fenceposts instead of pushing on up close to the becks. Encouraging to see that the split times were pretty good though despite the conditions and visibility.
I'll be having another look at it in 2 or 3 weeks time

Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
At the end of the day it is down to personal choice sgt man first or High Raise, but the more recess you do over the leg the more confident you will be with your choice of route.

Sometimes Roy following a path even if a little longer is better if the weather is poor or conditions underfoot are a bit heavy. Be careful when you are out tomorrow if you plan on going over leg 3 from seathwaite as there will be quite a lot of snow and ice on the higher tops but enjoy your day out.

Good luck with your run in DtS; throwing my tuppence worth in, I don't think you will gain anything from continuing with super tough training between now and the day (or two weeks before the day if you're tapering) so running stuff more with a view to keeping your eye in might be better. Instead of the Old County Tops, assuming your night time leg is leg 2, I'd recommend just reccying that over and over (preferably overnight in the thickest fog and/or rain that you can find) :)
-
Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
Daz, now is the time to really put it in. I'm not convinced timing of your run round OCT is right, but with 3 or 4 weekends to go I'd be wanting to do 50 miles but much more importantly 12 to 15,000 feet per week now. Don't miss out now after a decent spring of training. Climb, climb, climb is the way

Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
Stolly - I think DT is right, I have binned my intended plan and will make sure I bang in 60,000ft ascent in the next 5 weeks.
DT - I think Stolly is right, I have binned my intended plan and will make sure I just keep ticking over for the next 5 weeks.

Good answer. By 'keeping your eye in' I did mean keep up 40 plus miles and 10,000 ft weeks by the way, but now realise that it may not have read that way :)

Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
fluctuation is also keyat this time dont do same route, time, distance, high as when youre round comes you will get to that point

Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
I know what you mean Roy :)

Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
I rarely post details of my training, but will make an exception
in the "rolling month" between Haworth Hobble on 9th March and the Four Inns route that I did with Will on 8th April, I just counted up that I did 200 miles and 40,000ft ascent
however, none of it felt "super tough" due to the progressive overload of the 4 months leading up to it
-
Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
Well not long to go now before the big day. Training as been going very well with some long days out on the fells. Saturdays run around leg 4 from Honister was a lot easier underfoot than the last time i went round with not to much snow at all.:)

Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
Great to hear you're on track Mark and good to see some of that blasted snow is finally going!

Cheers Bill, and yes it is easier without all that snow although it as been great for building strength into the legs.

Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
Cracking day out with Markmc, over Leg 2 in the sunshine today. Great to see all that snow has gone, you can actually run at last! Decent pace too 3:46 for the leg , but never felt we we're pushing it. I guess all those days slogging through the white stuff are paying off!
-
Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
ace day for me too
picked up Leg 3 at Esk Hause, and did as far as Brandreth on Leg 4 before dropping down Sour Milk Gill to Borrowdale
Lord's Rake was still choc-a with snow (so did Foxes Tarn instead) but mostly clear everywhere else
hit/exceeded all splits without feeling like I was over-cooking it, so v.pleased

Sounds like a good day out Bill. 3:46 is some going - I hope we will be a bit slower next weekend!

Yes cracking day out Bill and as you said it never felt that we were pushing it at all, even into a strong head wind for much of the leg. Feeling good now and cannot wait untill the 17th May

Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
on the descent from Scafell to Brackenclose I reccied a nice line down off Rakehead Crag to Lingmell Gill, which brought me in under schedule
and I also straight-lined Red Pike from Yewbarrow col (rather than that horrible traverse to Dore Head), which went to schedule
all in all, a productive day!

Sounds like a good day Daz. is that it now for recces ?
Can you send me your leg 3 splits on here or email ? If I can get Wednesday off work I'll be doing most of leg 3 from the start. I'll hopefully go a bit above BG pace but would be useful to know your target times

Interesting ..... but you don't go all the way along the traverse to Dore Head do you? There are a couple of places where you can drop off to a better (lower) line. Keswick Simon pointed out the straight-line route to Red Pike to me and I've wondered whether it was worth doing ever since, because you do lose a bit of height. I'll try it one day ..... did you feel it was worth the effort?
-
Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
I'll also have a look over that straight line sounds promising. Did you go over lords rake daz ? Can't see piccie that we'll on phone? Sounds like your all ready for the off, have you got all your road crew sorted?

Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
I think Bill W goes this way. No doubt he'll be along soon. The best thread about route choices is this one - http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/showt...-Route-Choices

Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
I got to the col off Yewbarrow (where the trod down to Dore Head branches left) and descended a bit more steeply (further to the left) and took this photo:
http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/attac...1&d=1366640261
you can't see the descent, but I basically just avoided the worst of the scree (which is a LOT sparser anyway than the Dore Head traverse) and aimed for the bottom of the main stream on the other side
my plan was to follow the stream straight up (black line)
but I got a bit bored with the steepness and cut across to rejoin the main path (green line)
I had Yewbarrow-RedPike pencilled in as 47 mins and I did it in 45 so happy with that
where you bottom out is a bit boggy, and obviously there's the extra ascent, but you move quicker and it might be slightly less distance
not sure if I'll do it on the day, but nice to know it's a possibility...
-
Re: BG Attempt 17/18th May 201
Interesting, I will give it a go one day. For what it's worth - and it's only my opinion - I think I would stick with Plan A on the day itself. It might be less distance but I think the extra climb involved could be a kicker, especially if you're not feeling too great. On my first attempt I was feeling like death itself around here.
BTW, you meant Yewbarrow - Red Pike didn't you? I have similar timings for a 23hr schedule and then another 20 minutes to Steeple :D
