Sorry Geoff, it was a rhetorical question - I know you where you were on Friday (cause Marg told me ;) ), I meant how come you didn't do the OCT?

Perhaps there should be a new thread here - 'how to earn brownie points?'
Sorry Geoff you had told me (but I'd slept since then).:D
Any sign of results being posted anywhere? cant find anthing!!
i know runners got them posted last year. but what about on the net?
I've just sent the results through to the FRA and also to the Achille Ratti so hopefully in the next day or so they should be posted on the respective websites.
Thanks Tortoise.
Hope all the runners enjoyed their light refreshments on route and I hope to see them all again next year for tea and cakes at Cockley Beck.
Egg butties for me;) .
Thanks Tea Lady.
Having had a cup of black tea at Wythburn another one was ready for me when I got to Cockley Beck. First class support and faultless organisation. Many thanks
Yiannis
Just wanted to add belated thanks to TeaLady. The sandwiches at Cockley Beck REALLY saved me last year when I was staggering around a bit. This year, I felt much better and was able to enjoy them a whole lot more:D Your sandwiches and cakes are legendary and long may they continue!! Shall look forward to them next year!!
Just to say thanks to Tea Lady and her helpers for all their efforts and encouragement which were very much appreciated........excellent egg sandwiches and nice touch with the cowbell!
Thanks for the torrent of butties, cakes, juice and tea, tea lady; and for the first aid last year to go with the banana at cockley beck...... Now who do I thank for Grey Friars:mad:;)
No sign of the results yet on either the FRA site or the Achille Ratti site. Any update on the results?
Morgan
yes whats happened to the results
'Ow do all. Just wondering if anyone had any tips for next year's OCT. Really fancy giving it a go but not done much up in the lakes to date. Any advice much appreciated! :p
Add loads of climbing to your training.
practice what foods/gels etc work best with you as you will need sustainance.
Recce the route loads as you could be supremely fit and still mess up big time if your navigation goes wrong.
Stay overnight as there is a bit of a beer fest afterwards.
Enjoy it cause it is a belting race
Cheers TeamPie, all sound advice! I manage to get a decent amount of climb in to my training, it's just the lakes recces I need. Always fancied this one I must admit and having read some of the posts and met various forumites it sounds like a serious one to do.
Now, all I need is a buddy who's mad enough....
no bother.
I found the climb up grey friar a swine and hardest of the day, but you do have the bonus of a checkpoint b4 you set off. And watch out for the bogs on the runbetween Helvellyn and Scafell pike, fella we were next to went chest deep!
I will be back next year
We did the OCT for the first time this year and perhaps because of the weather found the nav pretty straightforward - my running partner had never been up Scafell and I'd never been up Hellvelyn. Given a clear day we could see where we were heading most of the time and had a number of teams in view for most of the day.
It was a train of people to the top of Hellvelyn - a fast descent down (again in the crowds), a plod up Wythburn but hard to go really badly wrong (falling into bogs notwithstanding) still a number of teams around, contour around Hard Knotts - might need a bearing in the mist to hit Stake Pass - paths from there to the Pike, South Summit and down from the Pike.
The descent off Scafell pike was a bit hairy and we were a little unsure of the right line, but saw we were on the same line as Yiannis so stopped worrying too much. Headed across the Moss underneath Long Crags and picked up the path(s) into Mosedale.
Got the map out in Mosedale for a sanity check as we were spookily alone. From there up and up to the col East of Grey Friar and picked up the paths to the Old Man. Back the way we came and then contour round Great carrs picking up the path to the 3 Shires, road and paths home. Took a great line after entering the Langadale valley proper after Blea tarn - made up 2 or 3 places going direct (thanks to lots of open gates) in a diagonal across the fields.
A fantastic day out, thoroughly recommended. All fell races should come with strategically placed tea and egg butty stops.

I know it's early to resurrect this thread but you know how races fill up these days....
I fancy doing the OCT this year but haven't really done any long races for a year or two. Does anyone know how rigid the entry requirements are?
By Heck, Andy! Fancy asking a question like that on here? By now the R.O. can't open his front door for entries. You went and woke-up all the b**g**s:rolleyes:
Do you really think they needed my post...
Certainly went and put it on the radar! They were all still chewing over the Walsh v Inov8 thread...as if that hasn't been done to death over the last 5 years..just 'cos some lad needs reassurance that his mum has bought him the correct footwear.
Thus far the OCTs has not been afflicted by the sort of elitism that some otherwise good races have. The entry requirements are not rigid but this is a serious challenge and in bad weather it can be quite testing. As you run in pairs, you wouldn't like to let your partner down, so start training for it!

Never too early to talk about the OCT!!! Best race of the year. As ydt says, a very serious race in view of the distance and terrain covered.
This year I intend to get out and recce the direct descent off Scafell Pike prior to the race. It's one of those "best kept secrets" that nobody will give me any hints on:D
I'm not asking anyone to reveal the secret "direct descent off Scafell Pike" route:rolleyes:
Just interested on the view of those 'in the know' how much time (roughly) it saves compared to retracing your steps and decending via Little Narrowcove.
Does this pic help? It's taken from the big bend in the river near Scar Lathing in upper Eskdale (approx GR.225045).
It seemed a reasonable route down on the day, although we had a bit of debate about exactly where to go to avoid the crags. We hadn't had a chance to reccie the race, so from Scafell Pike on, we just had to work from the map and follow people who seemed to know what they were doing.....and follow the paper trail!
Hi,
I am considering an entry into this for the first time. Whilst the butterfies are still settling, does anyone have a route they can share with me to help me to make the final decision?
Cheers
Louis
Here's my actual route from last year if it helps. There is a more direct line off Scafell Pike but we hadn't recce'd it
Thanks Dave - I am unable to open the zip - can you send the file in an MSOffice supported application? Sorry to be such a Luddite!
Cheers
Louis
Hi Louis
The file is a gpx (for gps/mapping programs) not an office format. The zip opens ok in Vista/XP - what are you using?
