Dangling dog poo bags wind me up almost as much as Disposable nappies in laybys, car parks or just tossed out of car windows, used condoms don't really make feel any better disposed towards the inconsiderate selfish types that desecrate our planet whether dog owners or not

Not that I'm particularly quick but I find it annoying (especially on ascents) when you're going at a steady rhythm and one of the little blighters jumps out at you, it slows me down and I struggle to get going again.
A friend of my dad trained his sheepdog to do just that in races. The dog seemed to know which runners to do it to giving its owner a huge advantage over the impeded runners!
I might have found the solution today. first meeting with out of control puppy I tried not to get cross. Second meeting it had scared a toddler and would not leave me alone.... Barking, jumping up, tripping me and trying to playfully? Bite. I lost my temper big time with the owner ( it's not the puppy's fault) but she only put it on a lead when I took their photo and said I would put up posters of it and explain why
Thought I'd take my new puppy out on the hills yesterday. Get him away from the hustle & bustle of the dirty city, open his eyes to the glory of nature. The sights, sounds etc. We were having a great time. Birds were signing, sun was shining, wind was blowing - we were generally feeling a part of the cosmos.
Then from out of nowhere a crazed runner leaps at him (not me) with an SLR advising him to 'show her love baby' and work the camera. Quite unsettling to say the least.
The problem with a LOT of dog owners is that they think people like their dogs as much as them ! and they simply don,t.When that large headed Labrador 'homes in ' on your privates you gently push it away and say 'nooo '.When you really want to smack it round the nose and yell at the owner ' can you get your dog's nose out of my f...ing bo....s ! (Thats presuming you have some,reword appropriately ! )
Just been for my first 20 minute run with the black lab puppy, great fun apart from when she stopped for a shite. I was tempted to chuck the poo bag into the c*nt next door's garden but bottled it

Read this thread with interest. I'd never been averse to dogs whatsoever. Two years ago I went on a long run with another from my former university's cross country team, a very good long distance runner, and he lost it when we passed the odd dog, close to their owners too. Told him there was nowt to be scared of etc. Then about a year ago I was running around a clearing near the Meanwood Valley Trail in Leeds and a big ol' dog runs for us. The owner tells us to stand still which I do as this thing tried puncturing my bum. I raised my arms in the air and all and had to wait like that until he trudged up to chain the blighter. Luckily it didn't actually break through my skin but I have to say a prejudice I've developed since running is why can't these perfectly able looking dog walkers show a bit more urgency when their dogs are hoping to maul other passers by?
Anyway since then bad dogs ruining my running enjoyment seem to have boomed, and it's not some estate ne'er-do-well stereotype responsible, it's people from farmsteads. One of my favourite paths near me is up a wood, winding and just about as steep as it gets, feels like an overgrown garden, before you emerge to a slight ridge halfway up the hill leading to one of my personal favourite spots around. Without adding a couple of miles on/invading fields, the only way of emerging up from it is by passing a couple of farms, one of whom has this mad sheepdog they've only once chained up. I'm usually on my 14th mile at this point and suddenly have to sprint for 300 metres until the thing's convinced I'm off their territory. Puts me off one of my favourite local routes and honestly I'm shaken for the rest of the journey. Late summer some adolescents were walking their dogs through some farms and the little get jumped up at me from nowhere and put teeth right into my skin, much to their amusement and less to mine booking in for a tetanus jab once I got back.
I've found jumping on the nearest drystone wall helps. You're still and dogs can't think of a line of attack there and give up. Next time I do that wooded route I'm taking the dog alarm though, shame it's half the size of a brick otherwise I'd have it in a pocket/on a wrist every run.
We had a beautiful cocker spaniel who'd chase in a dopey way but never physically harmed anyone, although she half-tripped us up more than a few times. Going back I would've trained her as a puppy not to be as prone to chasing as most dogs really aren't like that. On my runs with her the main problem would be her tripping us over. Actually the main problem would be her stopping to sniff every tree or wall she passed which made letting her off the lead a welcome relief. Then you'd turn your eyes for 10 seconds and look back, see her chasing 50 sheep up the next valley...
Was confronted by an insane Alsatian on a public track here in Kerry last year, hackles raised, spittle flying, looked like any move would trigger him.
Eventually a farmer came out of a house and called him, to no avail. He had to walk up and drag the dog away, with lots of swearing at the dog, but at least he gave me some honesty. Instead of the usual " oh he's harmless", he swore profusely at his dog, apologised to me and said "that fxxxxxx dog is liable to do anything"!!

Out on a run the other day a friendly black dog bounded up to me with no ID collar and no owner in sight. Despite being rubbish in this situation, I tentatively stroked him and from that point on I was his best mate. He then ran alongside me cheerfully ignoring (or not understanding) my instructions "go home" (etc). Luckily someone appeared who seemed to know who the dog belonged to. But if she hadn't I suspect the dog would have followed me all the way home. Then what? What does one do in this situation?

Second time was by a massive alsatian. This one was quite young and wanted to play, but I was on mile 13, running uphill - I didn't want to play, especially as "play" seemed to involve this thin g chucking itself at me! I'd shouted "hello" a very long way in advance to give the owner plenty of time to control it, but she didn't bother. A whippet got me by proxy..
Me and my partner where out walking on Ilkley moor, on the final leg, we where coming down a nice grassy slope.. A whippet came charging by. Inspired I decided to leg it down the hill, leaving my partner behind. 50 meters or so I went flying forward, smashed my shin then landed flat on my arse. My partner and the dog owner found it very amusing.. First time I'd ran for 3 weeks due to injury!
Hopefully I won't repeat this for the race...
Trip to the Lakes cancelled so it was an hour and a half round Dallam Park and Beetham Fell with the puppy. Home for dinner then a sleep by the fire (her not me:D)
First run in the snow with the pooch, we both loved it

Running around Ullapool hill last week came across a man with collie about two miles from car. The dog started following me and jumping up etc. I stopped and waited for the guy to catch up, hoping he'd put the dog on lead. No chance, not a word of thanks, just a grunt. This happened five times in five minutes, me running off, the dog chasing,me stopping,him grunting. Eventually I thought sod this and just kept going. The dog followed me for two miles right back to car. As I was changing the owner rushed up to me shaking fists and shouting abuse about trying to steal his dog!
Told him to loss off

I've been bitten twice this week! Both times by small dogs that gave no indication of their intentions until they sank their teeth into my leg! The second was just a nip, but the first bled for ages and has left a large scab. What made this one worse was it was with two runners so i assumed It'd be OK with me. Both owners were very apologetic - the first one did actually say "he's never done anything like that before" but then 10 seconds later said, "he'll go for anything"!!! So which is it??? The second was a young girl who was distraught and the dog was actually on a lead when it went for me. .
In both cases the dogs seemed fairly docile and friendly animals after and I can't understand what made them bite me. Maybe I smell like a sausage or something! I was also in a hurry to get home and couldn't see how getting cross with the owners or taking further action would help, but it did make me think that maybe all dogs should be muzzled in a public place perhaps? It does seem extreme, but as I say, these weren't dogs you'd expect to bite. Luckily I haven't got infected with anything and my tetanus is up to date, but still shouldn't happen.

There is your problem..in my experience its the little ones that are more likely to bite...admittedly you are more likely to survive it, sans tetanus or distemper.
"Pick the ball up.... PICK THE BALL UP!!" (Dog owner yelling at my 10 year old son and his friends who were enjoying playing football (until the dog arrived)).
