Well done on doing Woodbank and then Mt Famine OB1, not quite as impressive as last years Holmfirth15 then cross country! ;)
I took some photos (when camera batteries weren't dying or my back-up freezing) of many of you looking lovely in race mode - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...1&l=64bec941cc Feel free to use and abuse them as you see fit.
needless to say I'd much rather have been running - that battle for 3rd-8th looked good fun, nice running Noel!
Thanks ba-ba. It's good to have some photographic evidence that I was ahead of Jack at one point. That won't happen again - apparently he was struggling with an injury.
I was very pleased with how my race went. CL set a good pace, especially at the bottom of the big descent where you start the big climb back up.
It will be good to see you out racing again soon, ba-ba. :)
It's not live yet , but the link to my video from the Famine race is hopefully below, featuring lots of you folk. :)

Rich
First time run of mount famine race for me, absolutely loved it, was good to be joined by a good show of fellow mow copers as the race was part of club champs, thanks to the ROs and helpers, another great day out in Hayfield! richpips vid is brill and ba-ba got a good shot of me to add in the photo album, thanks guys! carn wait to do it again next year minus the man flu!
Lovely. Nice one Rich. I was thinking when you were filming me on that ascent "look professional, and resist the temptation to say. 'look, I'm ahead of Jack!!'"
I have to say I found this video very inspiring, its a few years since I did this race. However I am sat in a bar in London watching Sheff U in a propmotion battle.
Thanks for all your comments.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
The video was excellent. I am also incredibly pleased you caught me in the last few seconds just as I look like I am falling backwards - sums the whole race up for me :)
Yes, I've been surprised by Simon Bailey's abilities on a number of occasions, despite knowing how good he is.
When we got to the top of the scramble start he was 5 metres ahead of us. After another 300 metres, he'd opened up a 50-metre gap.
I wonder if he'll do enough champs counters this year. And more importantly, will he beat his own record at Shutlingsloe later this month?
interesting point to see the lead runner avoiding the path on the opening seconds of footage - an insight into how top runners think of the terrain under their feet?
Results now available on the URL below - thanks to Mark Boulton for these.
Cheers, Steve
Mark Boulton, the race organiser, has asked me to post a request for help on the day. He's looking for marshals, help with registration, results etc. Quite a few of his usual Pennine helpers will be at Fairfield for the day (apart from me - I think I'm doing time-keeping, or something). If you can help out please contact Mark directly - Mark Boulton, 10 Highgate Road, Hayfield, High Peak, SK22 2JL 07873 115685 [email protected]
Also, don't forget this is part of the Three Days in May series (Hayfield May Queen race, Mount Famine, Lantern Pike Dash) - more details on Steve's website here.
Might be able to help... I'll check the home front and be in touch. I was hoping to run it anyway, having not done it before, so I'll check with the Operations Director.
I'm signed up for registration duty...see you all there :)
It's the Mount Famine race this Saturday (part of the Hayfield 3 Days in May series) and organiser Mark Boulton has asked me to put out a request for helpers.
Please contact Mark directly if you can lend a hand on Saturday - 01663 749253, Mobile: 07873 115685, email: [email protected]
Race details here, as usual.
Can't wait. MF is a little beast :)
Will I, won't I?
I wanted to do this race two years ago, but my wife invited some friends to visit us on that Saturday.
Then I was all set for it last year, but my Achilles tendon got a rather painful tendinopathy in the week before the race.
This year I apparently acquired plantar fasciitis the weekend before last, but I seem to have made a miraculous recovery (presumably it wasn't PF). What can stop me now? Well, Northern Rail, maybe. The 10:02 arrival at New Mills Central should leave me plenty of time to cycle up to Hayfield, but if that train is late . . .
According to Northern Rail website, the next strike is on Tuesday 30th May (i.e. the staff are having an extended Bank Holiday break!). I actually went to the Wardle Skyline race on the day of the last strike: they were running enough trains on the Manchester-Todmorden route.
It's a good race, although to it full justice you need to complete all 3 in the series.
Lantern Pike is also a crackers.
May Queen is a warm up to get the legs moving.
Of course, Stagger is absolutely right.
May Queen - Friday 19th May 7:30pm
Mount Famine - Saturday 20th May 11:00am
Lantern Pike Dash - Sunday 21st May 11:00am
All the details you need are here.
I'll see you at the bottom of Dimpus Clough on Saturday, making sure nobody cuts the corner!
I will be turning out for this one tomorrow
it will be my first Mount Famine at the 10th opportunity since I started fell racing
I was intrigued myself to know exactly why I'd never made it before, so looking back in my records my excuses are as follows:
2008 - Fairfield
2009 - Lady Slugge racing
2010 - Daughter's Birthday/Party
2011 - Leaden Boot (LDWA Challenge type event)
2012 - Daughter's Birthday/Party
2013 - Daughter's Birthday/Party/ week before BG attempt
2014 - OCT
2015 - Daughter's Birthday/Party
2016 - Heart Ablation Procedure Recovery
2017 - Daughter going for Birthday treat with mother/grandmother in afternoon... but me/car not needed til evening... so can FINALLY sneak away to sunny Hayfield!!
The first time I did the race, I stood on the track at the start and asked a Pennine runner which way we started. He pointed up the bank. Someone shouted go, I was at the side of Si Bailey, I was within 10m of him at the top. Then he had gone. No one ran the bank to the top.
Here are a few snaps from today's race.

Can I post your excellent photo of my desperate grimace on Facebook (with acknowledgement, of course)?
The results are also out very quickly. I notice that in my age category (55), the first female was well ahead of the first male. Ali Keates needs weights attached to her legs, it's not fair on the rest of us when someone as light as her is doing fell races.:)
No probs Anthony. Hope you enjoyed the race.
Ace Photo's Mark - very kind of you to include my Shack wriggly tin roof in almost every pic' + the Knott and Cabin :-)
Brilliant turn out today 179 took part and all were safely back, some of us in the very welcome rain, followed by hail-storms this eve... Suns out again now and Dragons Back & South Head looking more than nice as I try and type this ;-)
Must also say a very big thank-you to RO Mark and the KFR/PFR Team of Marshalls - all went really really well, plus thanks SteveT for sorting and posting the Results so quickly.
Don't forget 3 Days of Madness continues tomorrow at 11am - Lantern Pike Dash www.t42.org.uk/hayfield .....Oh' Eckkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!
See you there
there was a fella taking photos at the stile on top of Mount Famine - anyone know who/if they're online? I'd like to see If I looked 'good' as I leapt it, but I probably just look like a sack of shite, as per...
https://www.flickr.com/photos/155131...57683953464476 it was Pete Nicholson and a great batch of photos they are too :-)
I was talking to the race organiser, Mark Boulton, last night and he's a bit short of helpers this year. He could do with hill marshals and someone on the finish funnel. If you can help out a week on Saturday (19th May), please contact Mark. Either 07928 236582 or [email protected]
More details about the race, as usual, on Steve Temple's Hayfield races website.
