And at the end of the day we can have a campfire and cook baked spuds in it, just like the old days :).
Sounds like a plan.

Rob , After dropping off the trig on Cadair i can show you the best line to the coll missing the rocky path.
hard luck Rob with the weather. I hope all is well next time.

I'll certainly be keen to reccie parts of the round over the next 8 months, favouring the rocky bits over the boggy bits. The High Peak Marathon gave me at least a year's worth of bogs in one day, and I figure I'm not due any more until next March.
These damn pseudonyms aren't half confusing - Molehill, was it you that gave me a lift back to my van after I finished at the end of section 4?
PLR, yes Moley was driving the red Peufeot estate on "ferrying" duties. I was Wynn's 'sous chef', handing up bacon butties at Trawsfynydd and corned beef hash near Arenig hamlet (between Fach & Fawr).;)
Well I imagine IainR will be happy to aid and abet. Wouldn't mind the odd session meself. The whole Rhinogs leg is always a good challenge for a winter's day.
So they are "Pierre":D. Did you get your tops back?Quote:

I feel it is time this round was dragged back to it's rightfull place on page 1.
Just because that's where it belongs ;). And the first mutterings and stirrings for 2010 are begining.
Would be up for the full Rhinogs traverse for sure (can that be done with one car and train?). Caders also a great run. The rest.... :-)
TBH the main driver now is the winter Paddy, but only in good conditions. By that I mean either good, not too cold, clear conditions around a full moon for a solo sub 24; or great snow conditions for an accompanied long steady whatever it takes. I'd imagine few days out would equate to a paddy in great snow conditions, clear skies and full moon even if it took 30 hours.
Off to Aus next month, won't attempt before that for sure, but Jan full moon may arrive too soon after we arrive back from 30-40 Deg heat, so really baking on the feb full moon.
Anyway will be up for recces of the merionydd, it has a strange appeal, parts look nice..
I'm doing this round next year.
Fortunatelly I live very locall to the whole round and Boundary stone, Waun Oer and Mynydd Ceiswyn are literraly my back yard. Allso my uncle owns land on the Rhobell mountain and the Dduallt so I'm Quite familiar with them as I've been his sheepdog for the past 20yrs :-). True about the section between the Dduallt and Rhobell, bit of a scram and the forest has now been half clearfelled but have found a way through that comes out at Post Garreg which gives you a good start for the Rhobell ascent.
I look at Cader idris out of my bedroom window 2 miles west and the Arran's 3miles east.
Planing to do Barmouth to the Main Dam at Trawsfynydd via Diffwys and Rhinogs sometime soon baring on a break in the racing calendar.
Will be looking at early june to do it though as Cader Race is mid May.
If Anyone fancies doing a section will be happy to help.
Lucky man, it takes me 2-3 hours to get there and I have spent many happy hours on those great hills.
....."but have found a way through that comes out at Post Garreg"... Can you please pm me more detail? Rob Woodall will be very interested to know also.
Yiannis
Have PM'd you Yannis.
It looks like a free weekend on the 28th and 29th of Nov so could do a section on that weekend if the low, low cloud that we have here at the moment clears off.
Let me know if anyone fancies a section or two.
Good man, as a local you'll fully appreciate ydt's course over the best of the mid-wales uplands, an inspired route through our best and remotest areas (boggiest, tussockiest, wettest, muddiest, rockiest, remotest, goat ridden clag......... :D).
Hopefully once this retched injury is mended, 2010 will be the year I complete it (not sub24, just complete it).
As you may have gathered, I just love this route - it's the perfect combination of everything.
I can't find Post Garreg on the map :o is it near Ty-newydd-y-mynydd? That's where we came out of the woods last time. I've been looking for a way through to the ride just to the West of the forest edge below Dduallt. Mr Woodall has a recce planned for the New Year ;)
This is how it was. Now part of the forest has been felled and the ride is rough. The OS maps did not show the rides shown in the photo.
Yiannis
This route might be worth a try. It loses 50 - 60 metres more but misses out the rough forest.
Yes I certainly will be - where does the new route go? We had in mind to look at this, maybe 1st of 2nd weekend in January.
Rhinog recce - based on my very slow split time in July I need to look at the first bit (to the first top) in the dark... There's nothing else I have to look at but more recce time would be good. I've no weekends until 12 Dec though.
BTW my attempt is planned for May 7-8 with 21-22 as bad weather backup (starting late Fri night). Good to hear of another firm plan to do the Meiri - I envy your proximity to the route
Nice pic  http://www.wfra.org.uk/results.htm
And well done to Sam Smith - also of Team Meiri :)
Still trying to find time at the moment to re do the way I found through the forest to post gareg. So I can give you more detail.
(post gareg is'nt on the OS maps) it's a landmark in the forest that we localls refer to for location, which is a stone post on the side of the forest track, you might know of it Yiannis??, but a ride I ran on comes to the heavilly felled area and before it was felled there was a clear path off the ride to post gareg. The path is still visible for about 40yds then it's burried by brash and fallen trees, and its starting to overgrow now.
Ran from Dinas Mawddwy over Maes glase, then over to Waun Oer, notq ite sure where we picked up the meiri route here, then down to the bwlch where the road goes around the back side of Cader, then followed the Merionydd route until the summit, when we took the race route down.
Loads of snow, ground below water logged from all the rain so very heavy going, snow probably a foot deep in the drifts, but loads of bogs to fall through the snow into.
Should of let me know you were in the area. I live just by Dinas Pass.
Anyways I had a toughie today. From Bontfronwydd up Aran Benllyn, Aran Fawddwy, Drws bach. Snow was deep on the Arans today with drifts and low visibility on the summit of Fawddwy. Good though even if most of it was'nt runnable.
Got a fairly good idea now of the route from Pont Fronwydd over to Mynydd Cyfrwy on the Cader section. Just need to brush up from Cyfrwy to Morfa Mawddach. Then suss out the rest.
Awsome route :-)
The descent to Barmouth from the Cadair Idris section is shown. The bit as far as the tarmac lane, involves trespassing, the rest is on path. The alternative is longer through a complicated forest path.
Yiannis
Yiannis, why are you upside down?
Cool. Thanks for the map Yiannis.
I'm quite familiar with that section after looking at the route you pointed out.
It's one of the areas we hold 1 of our weekly training runs, starting from Cregenan Lakes car park.
Think I need to start thinking about Rhinogs, Migneint, Arenig's now.
I'm off to Aus next weekend for 3 weeks but will be up for a few recces in the NY. This rounds on the radar but not until at least 2011. I've done all the Cader and southern Rhinogs and that's straight forwards. Worst part of southern Rhinogs was getting out of Barmouth onto the Ridge proper through all the gorse. Good to start to see the area though. We're in Nant Peris, so not too far off. Surprised how tough that Waun Oer section was, especially in the snow.
Some pics here:

Iain,
My planned Meirionnydd round route between the Aran section and Dyfi Fforest would descend to the A470 at Pont Buarth-glas, up a very steep grassy climb to Moel Cwm yr Eglwys, Maen Du, the 605m top by Craig Portas ant to the BS - see picture. Unfortunately, on the day time was getting short and it was decided to cross the A 470 at the car park at Bwlch Oerddrws and go straight to the BS. This, much to my dismay, left out one of the most interesting bits, particularly the scenic Craig Portas. But I got my second chance in my Snowdon to Pumlumon solo run when I did 12 large hills including Maen Du.
So there is a nice little extension Iain for you to consider.
Yiannis
Cheers, we were wondering where exactly we had rejoined the meiri. We came up the foot path that contours around Foel Dinas, and then headed North West to join your planned route.
I'm just starting to get to know the area, sporadic recces. Nice to see new areas.
The LDWA used (& may still do) to organise an event every Spring, the Mid Wales Mountain Marathon... from Dinas Mawddwy to Ty Nant over all the tops in the extension, over Waen Oer, down to Cwm Ratgoed and then back over to Mynedd Moel & Penygadair. Rob Woodall also recce'd the extension but time constraints also took him via Bwlch Oerddrws
I used to do that event, Tarren (John Marsh) was also a regular, we had some good runs out over it, especially as it was held in April, so some interesting weather at times and went over it in deep snow the once. All the way down to Ratgoed.....and then all the way back up again......very amusing . Another good event long gone :(.
